As everyone is concentrating on the loathsome things that Rev. Hagee has said about New Orleans, or gay people, or Muslims, or Catholics, his more radical views on the poor and his encouragement of violence in Christianity has been overlooked.
Get a load of the hateful things Reverend Hagee had to say on those issues in the video below:
I call this a hate sermon by Reverend Hagee. I'm not sure what else you can call it when they guy is shouting maniacally at poor people to "Starve!" and encouraging others to die before they compromise on (Hagee's view of) Christianity.
This is the man John McCain is proud to be endorsed by? And we're having conversation about Rev. Wright while this is out there? Obama has repudiated Wright. Will McCain give a similar 45 minute speech explaining his relationship to hateful evangelical preachers like Rev. Hagee? I'm waiting.

Interesting headline. So, HAS "Reverend" Hagee's vile hate speech been "Overlooked" by our MSM?
Not really.
More like the MSM stuffed it into an airtight box, shrinkwrapped it, attached it to a concrete block using a thick chain, and then dropped the whole kit and kaboodle into the depths of the Marianas Trench.
it's just so blatant and horrifying
were it not for this election being held in the Internet Age
none of us would have the slightest clue about what is going on
with ALL of the candidates.
HuffPost's Pick
Ernestine, I'm an Obama supporter, but I unfortunately don't think the comparison between Hagee and Wright is especially useful. Obama had a longer and more direct relationship with Wright than McCain has had a with Hagee.
But for real parity, I'd like to see the MSM investigate the long-term and direct relationships that McCain and Hillary have had with people and institutions that have some obviously unpatriotic character traits. The associations only need to fit the formula, "You don't get to choose your family, but you do get to choose your (blank); if it had been me, (blank) wouldn't have been my (blank).
For example:
1) You don't get to choose your family, but you do get to choose your CORPORATE BOARDS; if it had been me, WALMART wouldn't have been my CORPORATE BOARD.
2) You don't get to choose your family, but you do get to choose your LOBBYISTS; if it had been me, CREDIT CARD COMPANIES wouldn't have been the LOBBYISTS who funded my campaign.
3) You don't get to choose your family, but you do get to choose your PARTY PLATFORM; if it had been me, MORE TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH AND ONGOING WAR wouldn't have been the PARTY PLATFORM that I would have run on.
See, it's fun!
All best wishes,
Amy
But Amy, dear, most Americans DO choose their pastors, but they do NOT sit on corporate boards, nor do most Americans run political campaigns, so where someone like you would get your campaign money is moot.
As for party platform, I'm with you there.
Strongly disagree. McCain's bedfellows on the religious right are MORE significant.
Obama's relation with Wright is RELIGIOUS and does not seem to have much to do with Obama's political beliefs. Wright does not really help predict Obama's likely official acts, such as judicial appointments, laws he will sign/veto, etc.
McCain's relations on the other hand do help predict his likely acts as president. McCain is not just visiting Hagee and Parsley on a stage, he is condoning them, giving them his nod of approval, and asking for THE VOTES OF THEIR FOLLOWERS. McCain is including extreme religious groups in his base of support to get elected. It makes me believe that he will favor these people if he were president. It tells me that McCain's politics as president, like Bush, will tilt toward the religious right. McCain may continue Bush's stem cell policy. McCain, whom we already know is not big on Roe v. Wade, may well be influenced by the religious right and give us another Scalia or worse.
The mistake in comparing Wright to Hagee, Parsley, Falwell, and others is to frame it as only a matter of personal religion and belief. When viewed politically, the clear implication is that McCain is following Bush's path to election; court fringe religious people in America and please them when elected.
More succintly. McCain's choices about Hagee and Parsley inform us about what kind of politics McCain would have as president. Another president aliged by choice with fringe religious groups...
per yoosh - the MSM will not touch this
why the hands off treatment with McCain?
The guy is goofing and gaffing and exposing himself at every turn
and nobody in the MSM will speak a word of it.
Today he basically admitted the reason for the Iraq war is to protect our oil
and earlier this week, we learn that McCain was FOR bringing the troops home before he was AGAINST bringing them home (at least for the next century)
So do Wright's weird ideas reflect on Obama, or not? If not, then neither do Hagee's.
So why is the MSM giving Wright 24/7 coverage and Hagee ZERO coverage????
Obama denounced/rejected/repudiated Wright AND his statements
McWAR ACTIVELY sought and is proud of Hagee endorsements and has NOT rejected/repudiated and denounced him. He still says he is PROUD to be endorsed by such a great leader.
We're not saying McCain is a racist. We're saying how can he pass judgment on Obam when he himself has these same kind of acquaintances.
They weren't the same kind of acquaintances. McCain's endorser preaches hate and intolerance of different groups, whereas Obama's ex-pastor was controversial for insensitve remarks after 9/11 and saying that God must be "damning" America. I keep seeing posts on the blogs that Wright is "racist," but no one has ever said what views of Wright's are supposed to be "racist."
S1m0n - that is not at all the point!
the point is McCain is hands-off and being given a free pas daily by the MSM
today he basically admitted the Iraq War is for oil
he doesn't even have a clear understanding of who the parties are in the Middle East
Obama is being beaten daily by the MSM for every little blink and sneeze
even Hillary's Bosnia gaffe (4 times) was under-reported as compared to any spec of dirt they can possibly attach to Obama.
The effort of the MSM to sway this election toward the best interests of Corporate America is dangerous and frightening.
Were it not for the Internet, all voters would know nothing about what is actually going on
Hillary's Bosnia gaffe was under-reported compared to Obama's gaffe? I hardly think showing video of her Bosnia arrival on national TV is under-reporting.
There are no "specs of dirt" being reported about Obama - at least not yet. While I believe the media is a herd that is distorting Rev. Wright's views, Barack Obama has a long association with the man. That's not a spec of dirt, but it was bound to be a point of controversy and should've been dealt with sooner in the campaign.
The only other thing I can think of that you might consider a "spec of dirt" is Obama's "clinging to guns and God" comments. They were, in his words, inartful at best, and certainly fair game in a political contest.
There has been plenty of negative reporting on Hillary and her campaign, e.g., race-baiting that never happened, and people on HuffPo have at times sounded like the Clinton Chronicles at times.
Such is the American way; it's just regrettable that two historic figures should've wound up running in the same primary season.
AGreed. And what about Bill taking $800,000 from Columbia and Penn and Wolfson also being paid by Columbia? Why wasn't that repeated over and over? Penn "resigned" but is still on the campaign.
Why isn't she questioned why she won't say her Iraq war vote was wrong? (Edwards and Kerry have said they were wrong to have supported the Iraq invasion)
Why isn't her stubborness and value of loyalty over all else compared to Bush?
Why isn't she challenged about her hawk position on Iran?
I think that's the exact point. Judge a person by their own actions--- not by the actions of those around them.
And if 20 years in Obama's church was able to produce such an honest, intelligent and pragmatic leader, then I think we may have misjudged the church. (even if the pastor has grown way too egotistical and self-important from his hurt pride)
The sermon that inspired 'The Audacity of Hope' is a beautiful uplifiting sermon, preaching personal responsibility and compassion and the power of the individual to make positive change.
Wright made comments Obama disagreed with, and he's been disassociated from the campaign for a long time. Hagee has made comments McCain disagreed with, but he gratefully accepts his endorsement. His endorsement! That means McCain wins the Hagee voters. And what's the Hagee quid pro quo as a result of this endorsement? I'm very concerned about what promises may have been made, and it's time for John McCain to respond to this troubling issue.
YES. This is what I've been trying to get across to people. Stem cell research, Supreme Court, and all the other positions of the religious right. I don't want another president who sides with the religious right, and that is what Hagee and Parsley portend.
Will mcinsane give a speech on hagee? In a word, no.
wow
the truth is Maccain does not sell...he is an Open book...the Press is bored about him and yet Obama is misterious and good to be true...its human Put Mccain in University Campus and Put Hillary and Put Obama there too or in High school setting the popular guy has always some dirty stuff and rumours said about him and the girls drop...but theother guy like mccain can call his girlfriend Cunt and nobody really care,,, his pals and pastor can go on top of the roof on campus and shout shit but students will laugh it off like he is wasting time.....and Hillary in the feminist on Campus who hate the popular new guy and will manufacter all sort of things to bring him down,...and for some reason they will be angry and viciours...
and more, a close and dramatic race draws viewers, ratings go up, and corporate profits go up. Rush needs no operation chaos, the media is doing it for him.
Thats not Important...If Obama Wins tuesday..Clinton is going to look for her own Rev Wright...She will be like thats its curious ,, why is that my Rev is never spoken about ,,,, does it appear curious that obama get to make all the speeches......then she will say the press has give the Wright issue alot of exposure at her cost...
Nope, the double standard is glaring at us all and there is nothing we can do about it. Generally speaking, thank god for blogs.
agree!
Blogs are echo chambers and I really don't believe most of the voting American public bothers with them.
Of course not. McCain is a Good Old Boy, white, male, wealthy, in politics, and a Republican. Nobody cares about his ties to hateful, vicious, racist, and elitist persons because we already suspect he's the same things, himself, and are giving him a free pass for those very reasons.
We can't let an n-word stand on his own merit when his white opponents are failing for lacking the same.
Unfortunately the MSM won't pick this up.
Hagee is white but Wright is black so one becomes a story and the other does not.
yea it has nothing to do with mccain having zero relationship with hagee, not even a member of his church, compared to wright, who is a 20 year family friend and mentor to b. hussein obama. yea, those two things are the same.
Image Obama going to Farakan for an endorsement. No personal relationship, but still acceptable???
Nough said
you're right; it does have nothing to do with those things. It has everything to do with the fact that McCain accepted Hagee's endorsement and Obama rejected Wright's .
This argument is so old and tired and doesn't hold water. The relationship is totally different and you know it, Cenk, but you are so in the tank for Obama, you are intellectually dishonest with yourself and your readers. Obama has repeated that this was a relationship like a father. He compared him to his grandmother. Has McCain ever said anything even close to this about Hagee? NO. McCain never attended Hagee's church, not once. Obama, 20 years. And I could go on about the marriage of Michelle and Obama and the baptismal of their two children by Wright, but you get the idea.
You are a complete propagandist and you know it. Apples and oranges and you know it.
And Obama is just pissed that his father through him
Yes, it is completely different. McCain went groveling for Hagee's endorsement in order to shore up his cred with the theocons in his own party. McCain either knew of Hagee's statements on a range of subjects before seeking Hagee's endorsement and didn't care; or he didn't do his homework because had to have a high-profile evangelical in his corner.
Regardless, McCain-Hagee far worse than Obama-McCain. I consider my priest a friend; he has advised my wife and I on some difficult matters and he baptized our son. That creates a bond, no question. But in no way does that mean I endorse his politics, nor he mine, and he's said some things from the pulpit that I've disagreed with, even if they weren't what I'd call inflammatory. But that happens. But if you actively seek someone's public political endorsement, that implies you DO agree with what they've said.
I know you probably want this to destroy Obama's presidential bid, and you're free to go on hoping. But I think with all the talk about how much this has hurt Obama, most voters get it, because most voters, at one time or another, have faced conflict with a spiritual mentor or the leader of their faith community.
obama welcomed jesse jackson and al sharpton into his fold, despite their long history of anti-semetic remarks. clearly, wright has passed his contempt for israel and jews(something he shares with good friend lewis farrakhan) on to his close family friend barack obama.
Thank you, CommonSenseRules! Cenk, put away that koolaid!
McCain said he was "honored" to have Hagee's endorsement, and you know it. McCain wants us to stay in Iraq until we are morally and financially bankrupt, and you know it. Obama has distanced himself from Wright's remarks, and you know it. Nah, you don't anything, except what the right-wing cabal tells you to think, and you know it.
obama entire world view is based on wright's teaching. his desire to negotiate with iran and disavow israel are direct results from wright's teaching.
When you go on TV and say you are "proud to have his endorsement" as McCain did on Stephanopoulous' show last week, you should, indeed have to answer for that.
Here's the difference: McCain actively sought Hagee's endorsement, while Obama didn't seek, nor did he get Wright's endorsement. But then, thinking past talking points seems to elude you.
didn't seek his endorsement? obama titled his memoir after a wright sermon!!! his whole life has been shaped by jeremiah wright. wright was the only father figure he ever had. no wonder obama wants to meet with iran, he shares wright's contempt for israel (in trinity church, israel is considered a dirty word by rev.wright).
The MSM is going to give McBombBomb a pass on this,. just like they've given him a pass on all the rest of his ugly history.
