Mitt Romney: Richer Means Superior

Posted: 07/31/2012 11:47 am

Mitt Romney recently said in Israel that Palestinians don't have as high a GDP per capita as Israelis do because their culture is not as good as Jewish culture. That is both deeply racist and deeply stupid.

According to that logic, Jewish culture must not be as good as Arab culture because the GDP per capita of Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait crush Israel's.

Mitt Romney also talked about divine hand of providence as a possible explanation of why Israelis are richer than Palestinians. Did God, or should I say Allah, change his mind and decide that he likes Arabs in the Gulf States more than even the Jews?

Here's another explanation for the Palestinians plight: They have been under occupation for over 60 years now. They don't even control their own borders or trade. There have been crushing embargoes on their territories. It's a little hard to get trade going when you're literally not allowed to trade.

Our military has aided and abetted this occupation and, in many ways, we have paid for it. Now we have a candidate for president of one of our major political parties go there and rub their face in it. It wasn't our military that did this to you; it was your own inferior culture. That's literally adding insult to injury.

Despite all of this, the most relevant part of this exchange might be the perspective it gives us into Mitt Romney's world view. Rich makes right. If Israel is richer, by definition, it must be superior. If Mitt Romney is richer than everyone else, he must be superior to everyone else. Elect me for president, I'm richer than the other guy.

What he leaves unsaid is what is obvious in his mind, "The richer guy is obviously the better guy."

The fact that Mitt might have had some advantages being the son of multi-millionaire governor and Israel might have had some advantages in getting $3 billion a year from the US and having a sovereign country is irrelevant to Romney. Richer equals better. Period. Who cares what the circumstances are? Mitt's always about the bottom line.

Romney's deeply offensive comments about the Palestinians probably won't hurt him in the election at all. There is no group in America you can insult with more impunity than Palestinians and Arabs. That doesn't hurt your electoral chances, it might even help. But what does hurt is the overwhelming sense you get from Romney that he is looking down his nose at you. This son of a bitch actually thinks he's better than the rest of us because he was born to a mega-rich dad, figured out how to cheat the system at Bain and hid away so much of his money abroad (tax avoidance was an enormous contributor to his fortune - do you have any idea how much more you save up if you pay 10% in taxes a year rather than 35%). Now, that doesn't sit so well.

Who wants to have a beer with a guy who thinks he'd rather be having a Chardonnay with one of his equals? To Mitt, we're all Palestinians.

So Romney's remark about the Palestinians was "racist"? Hmm, I wasn't aware that there is a Palestinian "race".

There may be a Palestinian peoples (although this is disputed) or a Palestinian culture (which is mostly dysfunctional) but there is no Palestinian "race". I've often heard of so called "Islamiphobia" described as "racism", which is even more absurd. Islam is a relgion, not a "race".

I guess Jewish donors like to hear that they're divinely blessed, and oh so special. Bless them. I imagine a lot of politicians would say that sort of claptrap for a cool million.

Cmon... Look at the facts. How many palestinian and islamic Nobel prizes in the last 50 years? Palestian and Islamic PEOPLE are equal in every respect with any other people in the world and are deserving of complete respect. Palestinian and Islamic CULTURE on the other hand deserve none of that. Education, Religion, lifestyle, respect for women are all miserable failures and evidence of changes being needed NOW!

No one can live and thrive in the 21st century while living with 12th century values and traditions.

If they gave out Nobel Prizes in the science, medicine, and literature from about the 8th century to the 14th century, the Islamic World would have most of them, and Western Europe ( except for Islamic Spain and Sicily) would have none, or at least none in the sciences or medicine. The Western Wold's domination in these areas, and dominant status, is predicated on the great Islamic/Arabic civilization, which including Jews, Christians and non-believers, that preceded it; western Europe was a backwater for most of human civilized history. There is no Western Scientific Revolution without Arabic numerals, which originated in India, were augmented by Islamic Scholars, and were introduced to the West via the Islamic World. There is no Western Scientific Revolution without the developments in of Algebra by Persian Islamic thinker Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī. There is no.... etc.

Civilizations rise and fall. And the reasons for this are complex, and not conducive to understanding by people such yourself who are ignorant and simple minded!

Also, virtually all of the Nobel Prizes in the sciences and medicine were/are awarded to individuals from the Western World, or who worked within Western Institutions. Thus, you could apply your standard to rest of the world beyond the Islamic World as well. However, this is going to rapidly change in the coming years.

Incidentally, the Palestinians, including the millions in the Palestinian diaspora, are the most modern, secular, and liberal of all the people today known as Arabs! So your ignorance applies there as well!

You obviously cannot develop an advanced economy under a occupation that sets conditions that are hostile to that!

"Romney's deeply offensive comments about the Palestinians probably won't hurt him in the election at all. There is no group in America you can insult with more impunity than Palestinians and Arabs."

He not only insulted Palestinians by saying Jewish culture is better, using GDP per capita as the evidence for his argument, but also said US culture is better than Mexican culture for the same reason. Most western European countries, despite the economic and Eurozone crises, have a higher GDP per capita than the US. Does that mean their cultures are superior to ours? And aren't they more politically and economically left than the US? The Obama campaign needs to emphasize Romney's insult of Mexican culture to Latinos in the US and the Obama campaign needs to figure out how to make the connection that if Romney believes higher per capita GDP means a better culture, then Romney must think western European culture is better than US culture.

Also, some ethnic groups in the US enjoy a higher income per capita than other ethnic groups in the US. Does Romney really want to go there when he talks about superiority?

Do you think that, on average, Mexican culture, lifestyle and government are equal to the USA?
06:57 PM on 08/01/2012
flacon - Well certainly Mexico's government is lousy. But the issue here is culture, not government. And frankly in some areas I appreciate Mexican culture (the major importance on extended family for example) that we in the US could use improvement.

Anyway, Romney is auditioning for head diplomat. And he shouldn't insult his allies to make a point, unless the point is to insult his allies.

I could go on and on about why this guy should never be in a position to determine policy. But, it is possibility in a country where citizens have been overworked and undereducated and who have been propagandized for the last forty years to think that oligarchic rule is good for the for them. Witness: "Corporations are people too;"
11:58 AM on 08/01/2012
Well put.

But, not just to Flipper, but to Republicans, we're all Palestinians.
11:23 AM on 08/01/2012
You know, maybe Mitt's right. It's a shame we didn't have more men who thought like him, at our Constitutional Convention in 1787. Then, we never would've had the Great Compromise, which gave small population states equal voting in the Senate. And as to new states entering the Union on an equal basis to the established 13, we all would've been saved from that horrendous mistake, too. The result? Today, the original 13 states would carry more voting weight, and all those less populated states out west (that go Republican) would have very little say. Every Presidential election would basically be decided by the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states. Maybe Mitt and the Republicans will be interested in changing our Constitution, and getting us back on the right cultural path!

Dear GeoHist33,

You are not addressing the main point. Mitt made the observation that those cultures that celebrate Western values of Free Speech, All Men are Created Equal, Freedom of Religion, & Private Property Rights are more successful.

Is your position that a culture that celebrates death i.e Hamas, the Stoning of Homosexuals, the denial of Religious Freedom, that holds that women are only half the worth of men is one you embrace???
01:46 PM on 08/01/2012
No, it isn't. That's why I won't be voting for the Republicans.
11:21 AM on 08/01/2012
I'm not convinced that Cenk Uyger's logic is any stronger then that of Mr. Romney, but I do believe that his observations are, for the most part, spot on. Mr. Romney completely pandered to Israel and it's interests, not to mention his $50,000 plate breakfast fund raiser !! Yet he failed to travel the two hours to Remallah, the seat of the Palestine Authority, to foster conciliation and to open a dialog. Great American statesmen for the Middle-East, I refer to Henry Kissinger, James Baker and Jimmy Carter, created opportunities to enlarge the scope of conflict resolution. Lesser American statesmen create the opportunity to enlarge their campaign treasure chest and to embellish their ego.

I wonder what the state of the region would be if Arafat had not walked away from the Oslo accords, and had accepted the Clinton led peace efforts............I wonder what that solution would have looked like today, almost 14 years later????
06:22 PM on 08/02/2012
It would have been much like apartheid South Africa. You did read what exactly was being proposed didn't you? No sane person would have accepted that.

Pretty much the entire world believed you should have accepted it and that it was at least a moderately fair solution and that the Palestinians missed a great opportunity for peace...Clinton agreed...the world ostracized. Arafat after he turned away from the peace process.....hows that intifadah working out these days, anyway? All it has done is continued the suffering on all sides.....the reasonable attempt at peace should have at least been allowed to see the light of day....

Mitt Romney is the perfect poster child for the one percent.

If the American people elect this vulture capitalist to be their president then we deserve the ash heap of history we're headed for.

Of course Mitt and his buddies will be just fine sitting atop their heaps of cash.
09:23 AM on 08/01/2012
If the Mitt ever takes questions again, an intelligent reporter needs to ask him if "culture" also explains the income differences between Massachusetts and Mississippi. With its culture of high taxes, liberal spending on infrastructure and education, aggressive regulation and tolerance of racial and ethnic diversity, how in the world can Massachusetts be more prosperous than Mississippi with its culture of low taxes, public parsimony, lax public protection and racial division? If culture doesn't explain it, what does?

He might also be asked how he would apply his ideas of economic and political freedom to Palestine.

Or does he think that cultures which devalue materialism are inferior?
12:01 PM on 08/01/2012
Well, it DOES explain it. Mississippi is and has been the equivalent of a banana republic.

That is the Republican goal: turn the entire country into Mississippi.
12:36 PM on 08/01/2012
Good point. We should ask Romney why people in blue states are wealthier per capita than in red states. Superior culture?
12:05 AM on 08/04/2012
Perhaps you could also explain why California is going broke.
09:05 AM on 08/01/2012
Excellent points and all true. Mitt is arrogant, clueless and out of touch with the people at the same time. He wants to be president only because he thinks he should be. He doesn't have a burning desire to lift our country up and do right by it nor will his way of thinking accomplish that. His comments alone about the Palestinians should demonstrate to everyone how little he cares about the average guy.
