President Obama spent the first two years of his administration practicing political unilateral disarmament. He laid down his arms to reach out to Republicans, and they ripped his arms off and clubbed him over the head with them.

This idea of playing patty-cakes with the Republicans is enormously naïve. When is this administration going to get it through their thick skulls that they will never work with you?!

Now, if attempts at bipartisanship had no downside, then of course I'd be in favor of it. As a theoretical matter, trying to reach out to the other side and reach consensus sounds lovely. But it does have a downside. You don't get to make your own case as you're playing nice with the other side. They're hammering you day in and day out, and you keep your powder dry. You know what that ends up in -- a massacre.

And that's exactly where we are now as the Democrats are looking to get slaughtered in 2010. Gallup says the Republicans have a historically large 10-point lead in generic Congressional matchups. The president has gone from a 68% approval rating to the low 40's. He's lost nearly 25% of the country in his approval rating. That's a disaster.

So, the president has fallen and he can't get up. But more importantly, he can't figure out why he fell. It's because you let the Republicans push you down and you never even fought back. You only have two months left -- take the f'in gloves off, Queensberry.

Here are how many people you will convince if you don't argue your side of the argument -- absolutely zero. Is the president aware that the Republicans are in the opposition party?

Now, it's almost too late for this election. Partly because it's hard to make that turn at this late juncture and because this is something you should have been doing all along so it's already in people's heads. But much more importantly, this isn't about how you campaign; this is about how you govern. He needs to govern with an agenda of change -- remember, that's what he originally campaigned on? He needs to implement his agenda, whatever the hell it is.

Let me be specific. The CBO just came out with great numbers on the stimulus package. They said that it created up to 3.3 million jobs and added 1.7 to 4.5% to the GDP in the last quarter alone. How many Democrats have you heard talking about that? I haven't heard any. Why?

Because they're scared of their own shadow. Fox News beat them up on the stimulus package and a poll came out saying people are unsure whether it worked -- and that was enough to send the Democrats scrambling. Hey, you know that you might win on that issue -- if you actually fought!

I'm not convinced that a second stimulus is the way to go. It would depend on what they spent the money on. But if the president is convinced that we should try it, then he should convince us. If he doesn't have the courage of his convictions, how the hell are we supposed to believe in them?

They should brag about what they got right, but it's even more important to lead in the right direction from now on so we can have a reason to get excited about you. If I was the president, I'd nominate Elizabeth Warren, tell the big banks that there's a new sheriff in town and if they don't like it, they can eat dirt. Every poll in the country says the American people can't stand Wall Street -- and they're right.

This isn't about senseless populism. The big banks did rob us blind through the bailouts (AIG still owes us $178 billion that got funneled to the banks on Wall Street) and they continue to do so with nearly zero percent interest rates (and no lending to businesses in the meanwhile). Is the president going to do anything about it? Of course, not. Because that would make some people mad, and Obama hates that. This is the downside of No Drama Obama. A fight has drama, and a fight is what we need now. Punch them in the mouth. Leave a mark.

If the Democrats keep rolling over and being polite to Republicans because Obama wants to chase the myth of bipartisanship, his four years in office will be a colossal disaster. Here's what happens when you lay down your arms in any competitive arena, you get your head removed. Pick your arms up, and throw a goddamned punch.

You are absolutly correct. The american people want a leader not some weak kneed pencil pusher. So Barack how is that "bash your base & kiss the butts of the opposition triangulation strategy" going? The repuglicans are like a one legged man in an ass kicking contest & they're still kicking your ass. WAKE UP!!!

Sorry...I am not with you on this one...in fact I believe your assessment is counter productive.

Obama's Achilles heel has been his inability to effectively communicate/connect the dots of the merits of his many reforms and legislative accomplishments.

He is making great strides but many americans (including dems) just do not know where he is heading.

He needs a dramatic and comprehensive overhaul of his communication systems...starting with Gibbs. He needs a team that can dot the i's and cross the t's...a clear vision and a sequenced communiqué (yes a road map) on how is going to get there.
04:56 PM on 09/06/2010
?!?

What "great strides" are you talking about?!?

There aren't any. Unless, of course, you are a bankster, health care exec, or a lobbyist. He's made plenty of great strides for them. As for the rest of us? Not so much...

The first and worst mistake that Obama made was to continue the Bush policies on the war and almost all aspect of the administration. He should have made a clear cut, make sure that all the people knew things were going to change, and hold immediately accountable the prior administration for their crimes and misdemeanors. Not recognizing the rampart racism of his enemies (republicans), not realizing that they swore to destroy his presidency, and hoping for some bipartisan handout, didn't help matters, either.

Spot on, bro. The best thing that might happen after this is a real Progressive party will get some wind in their sails. The Dems have become, if anything, "Rethuglican Lite". Poodles.

He had more pressing priorities but I agree completely that it has to happen while dems have some control. The really sad part is that if the gop gains control no matter whats going on in the world their top priority will be persecuting the dems for whatever they can find real, petty, or manufacture. They would bring government to a standstill while they repeal everything the dems have accomplished and and prosecute as many as possible. The hole time things would be getting worst while they continue to blame Obama.

Democrat pundits always blame the messaging tactics of their party when the voters abandon them. Its never their policies.

Did you read the article? Cesca blamed the DEMOCRATIC record of government and the failure of DEMOCRATS to make their arguments in public. He is not at all attacking the messaging tactics of the other party. It's the opposite of that. But don't let the truth stop you from simply attacking anyone who holds a view left of yours.

Let''s expand our gaze. Obama is simply the chief operative of the DLC (emphasis on OPERATIVE). the Corporatist Triumvirate, AKA, DLC/DSCC/DCCC have used the cove(R) of bipa(R)tisanshit to create those PYRRHIC (they call them "political") victories.

Worse, after they '(R)etardiKKKan-ized" those bills, they wonder how so many are disillusioned by what they've done since Jan20,2009. The speeches have become sickening and still they think they gain some political points by calling progressives "retardz", heckling gays at speech rallies or bringinn out mr.Giblets to attack the "professional left".

Obama IS part of what is hurting us, but he's part of a TEAM which includes the media (almost ALL of it, literally), the DLC/DSCC/DCCC and the (R)etardiKLANs (yes! they are responsible for pulling things to the right, using Beck and KochBros, etc).

Thank you for putting in writing what rattles unpleasantly in my head everytime I think about the situation we are in. It is therapeutic, somehow, to see it in writing.

This is spot on. What is more stunning is that this is not the first time this has been said! I don't know how many times it has to be said: the "opposition" are not your friends. Perhaps there are some Republicans who want to work with the President but their party discipline will NOT allow it. So why waste one's time pandering to them. It is sheer insanity.

The bottom line is that whatever happens on President's Obama watch will be made his own. So he needs to fight for HIS position. Then he will be able to defend it. The behavior of this administration has been bemusing at best. I was under the delusion that since the President is from Illinois that he would be more connected to the Rest of America (outside Washington, DC & New York City pundit land). But it seems as if he has surrounded himself with people whose collective blind spot is the Rest of America.

Does the President read the MSM? Listen to right-wing radio? Watch Fox? Hear opinions that differ from Emanuel and Axelrod? Doesn't he care that all of his hard work will be for naught? It's one thing to lose touch while in the White House, but this is ridiculous! And I really like the guy!

Someone just made a good point in another thread about how HP profiles every wackadoodle GOP politician, but rarely profiles Democrat ones.

Every single time I go to Media Matters, the front page is ablaze with headlines about some Republican who said something outrageous on FOX. And if you go to Think Progress right now and scroll down, every single article is about the GOP.

This is our, supposed, liberal media - - yet all they are doing is repeating Republican talking points.

I think we might be slitting our own throats by being so consumed with highlighting how crazy, irrational, hypocritical, unethical, etc, the right-wing is.

If it's true that Obama hates making people mad, then I wonder if it bothers him that his progressive base is mad. Or, is it just the powerful he wants to appease.
