Chaplain Johnston began his military career by enlisting in the United States Navy in 1973, subsequently becoming a Navy Chaplain in 1986 with assignments to 6th, 8th, and 10th Marines.

His Army experience includes assignments with the American Forces Network (AFN) in Europe, the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas, and numerous line units throughout the Army. He was the Chaplain for the First Brigade Combat Team, First Cavalry Division, located at Fort Hood, Texas, from February 2009 to September 2010. In January of this year he received the Bronze Star for his military service while in Iraq.

Chaplain Johnston has also received civilian recognition for service, the most recent from the National Bible Association which recognized him with the Witherspoon Award for military ministry.

He is ordained through the Full Gospel Churches and holds five earned degrees. Chaplain Johnston is presently a candidate for his second doctorate in theology and ethics from the University of South Africa. He has recently edited The Military Bible and The Manual for Spiritual Fitness for the National Bible Association, which were published on July 4th of this year.

Chaplain Johnston is married to Julia Fletcher of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is the father of three children and has three grand-children living in Asheville, North Carolina.
