After 23 years at TIME magazine, Charles Alexander is now an independent writer. In his TIME career, he was a business reporter and writer, business editor, science editor and finally international editor. During his last 13 years as an editor, he directed TIME's award-winning environmental coverage, including the 1989 "Planet of the Year" report, the "Earth Day 2000 Special Edition" and the 2001 "Global Warming" cover. Among his many journalism awards are the Page One Award for Excellence in Journalism from the Newspaper Guild of New York, the John Hancock Award for Excellence in Business and Financial Journalism, the National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation and the Bassow Award from the Overseas Press Club for Best Reporting on Environmental Issues.

And for something completely different, Alexander was recently Associate Producer of the CD-DVD box set "Jersey Beat: The Music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons." He also wrote the liner notes for the Grammy-winning Original Broadway Cast Album of the Tony-winning musical "Jersey Boys," and had the first and last word in the "Jersey Boys" companion book.

Last Monday I had one of the my most dispiriting experiences in a long time. I accepted an invitation to attend a "luncheon forum" sponsored by the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank. The topic was "Keeping Our Cool on Global Warming," and the speaker was James Manzi, a senior...

Enough Already About the Jobs the Rich Create

Posted March 2, 2009 | 10:17 AM (EST)

The worst part about watching CNBC to monitor my stocks these days -- even worse than seeing those stocks in free-fall -- is having to listen to many of the reporters and guests wailing about the dangers of President Obama's proposed tax hike on the wealthy and railing against this...

Message in a Bottle: My Day and Night at Live Earth

Posted July 8, 2007 | 02:47 PM (EST)

For me, Live Earth was a fantastic concert and a historic, inspiring event. But then I was already part of the choir, a long-time campaigner against global warming. Of course 7.7.07 was going to be one of the greatest days of my life.

But what about the broader audience? Will...

"Ethanol Man" vs. "Ozone Man"

Posted February 26, 2007 | 01:04 AM (EST)

How do I know that the 2008 Presidential campaign is proceeding far too rapidly? I'm no fat cat, and yet I have already received a fundraising letter --from Barack Obama.

Climate change is the most important issue to me, and so that's what I'm looking for as I...

Why is Global Warming a Partisan Issue?

Posted February 18, 2007 | 06:26 PM (EST)

I did not watch Sunday night's premiere of The 1/2 Hour News Hour on the Fox News Channel. I can barely tolerate hearing Jon Stewart make jokes about the sad state of American politics, and so I was sure that the "humor" of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter on Fox...

Say It Ain't So, Peyton

Posted February 13, 2007 | 03:41 PM (EST)

Dear Peyton,

You were my hero for a long, long time. I grew up in Tennessee cheering for the UT Volunteers. I rooted for you in the Gator Bowl, the Florida Citrus Bowl and the Orange Bowl. I stuck with you through all those brilliant but ultimately frustrating years...
