LA Boycotting Arizona Is Not the Answer; Federal Legislation Is

What's Your Reaction:

Some politicians are so predictable that, well, you can predict what they will do. Such is the case with LA's embattled mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa. He is calling for a boycott of the state of Arizona because of its new immigration law. He calls it, according to the Los Angeles Times, both "unpatriotic" as well as "unconstitutional."

His words are, of course, custom made for pithy soundbites for television and radio, simplistic in the extreme. Federal law has for more than half a century mandated that non-U.S. citizens carry on their person identification and produce it upon request. He hasn't called that law "unpatriotic." And, as for the new Arizona law being "unconstitutional" -- we will have to wait for the U.S. Supreme Court to pass judgment on that one. I have read good arguments both for and against that notion.

Besides, even U.S. citizens, since 9/11, must produce a government-issued picture ID in order to board an airliner -- something that before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon would have been considered probably both unpatriotic as well as unconstitutional. But in the name of national security, it is now considered standard operating procedure.

Having said all this, it seems to me the central problem with the Arizona law is that we musn't get ourselves, as a nation, into a situation where each state decides how to enforce immigration flow (both legal and illegal) or a situation where one state (let alone a city!) boycotts another.

I'm not even sure what that means or how it would be implemented and I am certain neither does Mayor Villaraigosa or any other local politician here.

While, sometimes, boycotts do work, one only has to look at this country's experience with Iran or, going much farther back in time, Cuba, to realize that boycotts often do not work and can even prove counter-productive.

The real solution here is clearly federal legislation. The only reason Arizona has taken the action it has taken is because the federal government has proven totally inept at dealing with the situation in a fair and effective manner.

But this must now change.

Clearly, President Obama has to take a leadership position on this one, something he has yet to do.

And, Congress must pass immigration reform that both protects our borders but also deals realistically with the millions of undocumented (illegal) foreigners now in this country. Most are here to stay and, in fact, needed in California, Arizona and elsewhere to keep the economy rolling -- especially at a time when the nation's economic engine is still not exactly humming.

Federal legislation that offers a roadmap for these people to become legal citizens is the only answer that makes sense and not childish calls for boycotting other states.

With all due respect to the expertise of the writer, nothing in past history suggests that a meaningful federal solution is on the way so let's go ahead and boycott Arizona. After all, there are many excellent reasons for allowing Arizonans to starve to death, John McCain, Sarah Palin, J.D. Hayworth and Phoenix just to mention a few from near the top of the list.

OMG...I keep apologizing for my spelling...should be OUR borders...Manner (not manor)..also misspelled Guatemala and El Salvador....I'll try harder..and yes..I keep saying THAT too...
but..aside from errors..I stand by what I wrote...basically a perfect world..would fix everything.
#1..legalize pot (and I don't smoke or use pot)...wouldn't end cartels..but weaken them

#2..a truly viable immigration policy out of Obama...but another OMG...financial meltdown, healthcare reform, a facebook paged dedicated to his death..AND a war he didn't start..but continues to fund...what a figgin mess...

It's lose/lose...I don't believe it's possible to secure out border..it's just too long..and people are willing to risk death in the desert to get "here"...Of course..IF Mexico (which I love)..was not so wrought with corruption (as it's been for hundreds of years)...maybe they COULD provide the jobs needed to keep Mexican's home..but then..we also have El Salvadore, Honduras, Guatmala..and now...Chinese, Russians, all manor of other..non-latino countries.. it comes down to economics..in the entire world..the rich..get richer..and instead of opening a new factory, buy mansions all over the world and fly their private jets (I think..if Meg Whitman used her billions to REALLY help CA..she'd start a new company..and employ thousands..but noooo..she's spending it on being queen of the hill (gov of CA)... During the great potato famine..our shores were covered with the Irish wanting to live!... it's the same thing...and will never, ever stop...sorry to be a downer...I just don't see anything that will help everyone..

We can do both boycotts and federal legislation. In today's partisan climate, the former is easier than the latter. So what's wrong with putting our money where our mouth is, as a city and personally?

The mayor is a hypocrite. Even though her got his law degree from a correspondence course, I am sure he understand contract law and that it may not be that easy to break certain contract unless they are "at will". DWP currently gets 21% of its electricity from coal burning plants in Arizona, the get police weapon and uniforms from Arizona.

Tony Villar failed the bar exam something like 5 times.

I'm not SO sure he understands the law.

When foreign people move here with no visa or citizenship application, they know they are here temporarily, they should move to their home countries. They don't have the right to work here (and we certainly don't have jobs to share with 12 million people), so they need to stop sitting around in limbo and move home.

I wish Democrats and the HuffingtonPost would advocate for AMERICAN workers for a change. When is the last time you had to look for a job? Our company just posted a job for a secretary at $13 per hour.... we got 360 resumes. I can't believe HuffPo and Democrats want to add 12 million foreign workers to compete with us for the few jobs available during a recession. Put down the cocktail, and step out of your little elite bubble.

That's common. Anyone paying halfway decent money get hundreds of applicants.

We should all protest for the jobs being sent abroad, immigrants don't have papers, therefore can not compete and their is no fear for competition. The jobs being sent out to Asia, India and so forth are the jobs we CURRENTLY need for Americans...keep your focus on the real picture, not on hateful perceptions that are so far from being beneficial.

First, I love Mexicans and diversity. I love Mexican food.
BUT BUT BUT Why are the Americans always being bullied by the illegal immigrants and their friends?

Darn! Why don't they protest in MEXICO and SHOUT. "GET RID OF CORRUPTION. We need jobs! We need a good life in MEXICO. JOBS for us. FREE EDUCATION for our children in MEXICO! JOBS, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE, HOUSING in MEXICO. Stop the Corruption!!"

Instead in the US, it is "We are illegal immigrants and we HAVE RIGHTS! My illegal immigrant parents and friends have RIGHTS in the USA. You cannot look for us and ask us for papers. Boycott this and that."

I don't get it. The USA always has to provide for everyone while its own citizens are suffering. Look at all the budget deficits supporting every illegal and legal person. Scratching head.

Just make them all legal and open up the borders. They are going to win anyway. The USA loses every time. The USA always loses to the illegal immigrants. The illegal immigrants will always RULE and they are always right. The illegal immigrants will always play victim and will get what they want from the USA. They will win!!! It is a 100% guarantee. That is why they keep coming.

They have free education, and the government also helps them financially...it to is baffling why they come here where there is so much hate among races. Why did we come here?
03:14 AM on 05/01/2010
They do, they get free education, and the government too helps them such as how they help people here within the states. Whats is baffling to me is why they come here, a place full of racism, drivin by fear and greed. Why did you or your family come here and why did mine?
