How Obama Could Win In A Landslide

Posted: 02/24/2012 9:59 am

TIME magazine's cover story, which hit the newsstand Thursday, argues that Latino voters will cast the deciding vote in the upcoming election.

After watching the Republican candidates lock the kryptonite that is the immigration issue around their necks during the Arizona debate, my bet is that President Barack Obama could win another term -- even if he loses key swing states such as Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin -- but he must make sure he accomplishes one thing first: Connect with Latinos.

Republicans have not connected with Hispanics; the candidates' approaches to immigration are not compelling and lack substance, from talk of double 30-foot electrified fences to anchor babies and self-deportation. In fact, it could very well be that the 20 Arizona Latino voters on the cover of TIME and half a million more will turn out to vote in Arizona and flip the state to Obama.

Obama comes into the election with 196 electoral votes from safe Democratic states. If he takes Arizona and if Hispanic voters help him flip Missouri, which McCain won by fewer than 4,000 votes, and help him retain Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico and North Carolina, then Obama wins with 279 electoral votes, nine more than the 270 needed. If he can retain Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia or Wisconsin, also populated with many Latino swing voters, then he could win in a landslide.

It is clear, then, that connecting with Latino voters could very well be a tipping point for the president; the question is how to make that connection.

In his book "The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation," Drew Westen convincingly argues that "people vote for the candidate who elicits the right feelings, not the candidate who presents the best arguments."

Beyond the shared concern for economic growth, jobs, education and health care, Latinos are focused on immigration because the majority of the undocumented workers living here are from Latin America. This is an issue that resonates at a deeply emotional level with Latinos, whether they are descendants of Spanish colonists or a recently arrived Mexican sleeping on a cousin's couch.

Thus to really, deeply connect with Hispanic voters, any candidate needs to address the immigration issue by supporting comprehensive immigration reform and the Dream Act, which would provide a path to citizenship for those who earn a college degree or serve two years in the military.

This is a vital first step to earning the trust of Hispanic voters, who understand that the country needs strong border security but also know that we need a fair way to deal with the nearly 10 million economic refugees who are working in this country and contributing to our society. It's a matter of respect.

So how does Obama -- who has a dubious record himself on immigration -- win the Latino vote?

First he wins the ground war in the battleground states, which is door-to-door combat.

Next he outspends Republicans in Spanish-language media, just like he did John McCain in 2008, by five to one. It's no coincidence that on Tuesday, Obama did an interview with L.A.-based "Piolin," the most influential Spanish-language radio personality in the country. The president reassured Latinos that he is strongly committed to passing comprehensive immigration reform and lambasted the Republican Party for its extreme views and intransigence on the issue.

Hispanics want to feel they are voting for an authentic leader. Hispanics don't have to agree with every position Obama takes, but they must believe in and identify with his worldview.
He needs to explain that the Democratic Party is a welcoming place for Hispanics, that his world view of America is that of a caring, responsible, family and that his political ideals are based on empathy and fairness. Getting these ideas across to Latinos is vital to securing their votes.

Once Obama has established a deep emotional connection with Latinos, he can connect directly to the heart of Latino voters with three simple messages:

1. The economy and jobs.

Under Obama's leadership, an economy that was losing 500,000 jobs a month in the final months of 2008 is now gaining more than 200,000 jobs per month. His policies are working; they just need more time.

2. Health care.

Despite unanimous opposition from Republicans, Obama fulfilled his promise of making health care available to all Americans. Now 32 million more Americans -- including Hispanics -- will be able to afford insurance for the first time.

3. Education.

The president doubled the government's investment in scholarships and financial aid, making college more affordable to millions of Americans. Now students from working-class Hispanic families can go to college and get good jobs.

On the contrary, Republicans may blow hard about their understanding and affection for Hispanics, munching on burritos in the barrio on the campaign trail, but the evidence of authenticity of leadership and the strong record crucial to the Latino vote are just not there.

The refusal of all the GOP candidates to really look at immigration and offer a plan -- despite the glad-handing and tepid avowals of commitment -- makes it clear that the GOP just doesn't have the deep connection with Latinos necessary to pull off a win in November.

in other words. if we forget the last 3 years and blindly listen to what he wants to tell us he is going to do, we will vote for obama. no. no way.

obama is a politician. no more no less. just like bush. just like clinton. just like carter. just like the next guy. he will tell anything to anyone to get elected.
02:55 PM on 02/26/2012
Agree with your assessment. Obama can win if he makes a "personal" connection with Latinos. He needs to attend Latino functions; provide Latino TV interviews and reintroduce the Dream Act this year. Given the size of the Latino community, I believe it is time for a presidential debate sponsored by UNIVISION with the primary topics geared to the Latino audience. Latinos will comprise about 9% of the eligible electorate nationwide. If past turnout trends persist, they will make up only about 6.5% of those who actually turn out to vote next November. Most non-mexican latinos are americans who do not need or want immigration reform nor the dream act.

The president would look foolish wasting his time at rthe generally ridiculous latino functions or debating on Univision unless it's done in english.

Yes in a unusual moment of honesty Drew hit the nail on the head: emotions get vote. That is why the dems use these issue to scare minority voters.

On immigration Senator Obama told McCain he would support McCain-Kennedy bill but he did not. Then he promised to pass reform within his first year and with 60 votes in the senate and super majority in the house, he did nothing!! He could have added the Dream Act to the healthcare bill, he did not!! Now he says with a possible republican majority in house and senate that he will pass reform bill!! Right!!

On jobs Hispanic unemployment is up since 2008 and worse than the general number. On healthcare, poor Hispanics get Medicaid (the worse insurance in the country) while white union members in the mid-West keep their Cadillac policies and tax deductions!!

Great record to run on. All he has is play to the fears of Hispanics. He is also increasing taxes for those making over $200k. Many hispanics own small businesses and pay as individual income and will get screwed royally!! Way to go Obama!!

"Many hispanics own small businesses and pay as individual income and will get screwed royally!!"

And there's a clue: some people get bad business advice. Always keep your personal and business income taxes separate. Republicans always use this phony argument.

WRONG.

quote:
Obama joined all but four other Senate Democrats in voting for 2006 Senate immigration bill sponsored by Sen. John McCain, R- Ariz., and Sen. Edward Kennedy, D- Mass.

Last October, Obama, along with 37 Democrats, 12 Republicans and independents Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, voted to move to final vote on the “Dream” Act...
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23276453/ns/politics-decision_08/t/what-obamas-senate-votes-reveal/

It was the party of RepubliCANTS that didn't and dont want to pass Immigration reform or anything else Obama suggests even if they also supported the same issue in the past. RepubliCANTS have admitted their first priority is to make sure Obama fails, not to govern as they are elected to do, even if they have to step all over the middle class and poor to get it done.

quote:
When it comes to immigration, Hispanics should also examine who they support for House and Senate seats, Obama said.

The president also said, "I would have only broken my promise if I hadn't tried" to get immigration reform bill. "But, ultimately, I'm one man." "You know, we live in a democracy. We don't live in a monarchy. I'm not the king. I'm the president. And so, I can only implement those laws that are passed through Congress." This statement holds true considering how the president can only enforce laws that Congress passes.

You bet. If he can add the Latino vote to those groups that ACORN has already secured (the dead, Super Heros and comic strip characters), he's assured a landslide victory!!
11:38 PM on 02/25/2012
The Latino/Hispanic vote was only 7.4% of the total in 2008.
11:30 AM on 02/26/2012
But that 7.4 vote, swinging in either direct, makes all the difference in who is our next president.
09:54 PM on 02/25/2012
If Obama loses the swing states -- Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin -- he loses. Sorry.
11:42 PM on 02/25/2012
Obama could lose, but the field of republicans are so sorry, i could win. Now 2016 is a different story. Then i think maybe a J. Bush can win because the country's going to be in bad shape after 8 years of democratic rule. And i'am a democrat.
11:35 AM on 02/26/2012
Everything is cyclic. I had a conversation with a colleague, a stauch Republican. We both doubted whoever won in 2008 would win in 2012 because the economy was at such a low point. Not to mention that the Republicans have sabotaged what the Dems have tried to do every step of the way. Agree, the Republican candidates are so bad, they pretty much will hand the presidency to Obama in 2012, proving me and my colleague wrong.
But by 2016, it is very likely we will be way up compared to today. So unless the Democrat candidate blows it like Gore, a Dem should win again in 2016. My opinion, I could be wrong again.

Wisconsin -- after the Walker fiasco -- is no longer a swing state. It is blue. The others are swing states that -- like WI -- Obama carried in 2008.

Obama can win just by winning FL (Romney supports the Ryan plan to end Medicare) and OH (Romney opposed saving GM) -- so I'd say the betting should favor Obama heavily. Plus Obama has many paths to victory involving Hispanics, for example, among whom Romney is viewed about as favorably as a vampire.
11:35 AM on 02/26/2012
Why is that about Romney? Is it that he's a Mormon or just some of his specific policies?
08:58 PM on 02/25/2012
I suppose you could say the same thing about Mitt Romney -- the way he could win in a landslide is to "connect with Latinos".

But I don't thinks it's very good strategy -- nor the right thing to do -- to pander to an ethnic group.

BO seems to have the black vote locked up, and I don't think that's a good thing for America or for blacks.
11:41 AM on 02/26/2012
The Dems have always had the black vote. And the GOP has never opened its doors to us. Their policies clearly have and continue to favor the haves and, for the most part, that did not include us in the past. Times change, but our memories are long.
07:36 PM on 02/26/2012
I suppose you can vote against Republicans because of what their fathers stood for 40 years ago. Or you can vote against Dems because of what their grandfathers stood for 60 years ago (recall that the segregated South was a Dem institution, not a Rep one).

A better stratetgy would be to vote on the basis of what the parties stand for today. By voting 90% Dem, you allow the Dems to take your vote for granted and you wind up with virtually no sway in the debate.

when you say connect with latinos do you mean give back 1/3 of the u.s. or do you mean let 15 million become permanent citizens...

you may not think 15 million is a problem because they are spread out but i can guarantee that they are as big a drain on the system as a city of 15 million appearing overnight would be to any one state...

They are already here, they are not going to appear overnight. They will not disappear either. If you were a realist, you would approve of an open border, so that temporary workers would not be prevented from crossing and returning.

which country practices an open border policy and how does the public feel about it...
05:37 PM on 02/27/2012
President Harry Truman ordered 2 million illegal aliens to be deported after World War II to create jobs for returning veterans and to stop the drain on our economy.

Again, in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower deported 13 million illegal Mexican nationals so that American World War II and Korean veterans could have a better chance at jobs. The full deportation took two years, but they did it.

If presidents could deport illegal aliens in the past, surely it can be done today.
02:14 AM on 02/26/2012
Please describe this drain you speak of. Illegal Latino immigrants pay into the social services they use when theyre paychecks go towards Social Security(which they can't redeem) and other health care spending. The overall net effect of illegal immigration on our economy is a wash. Please back up your words when you cast dispersions like that.

the only time they pay in is if they are paid by an honest employer who writes a check...pull up into any lowes on a saturday morning and you can get 15 illegals who will do whatever for cash and will then go home to their wife and 5 kids and use the money they get for free from the government to support the kids...

ONE (Besides this sinking ship).

We've had 30+ years of trickle UP voodoo economics with the rich getting fabulously richer and the rest treading water or getting poorer. So a little equality of opportunity, and yes, a bit of socialism is a BAD thing? Step away from the kool-aid, come up for air, and look around. The country is IN such a mess exactly BECAUSE folks like you vote against the best interests of everybody (including yourselves) , but the so-called "job creators" --who are doing a land office business creating jobs...... in ASIA!

While "Latinos" reflect on immigration issues as much as anybody else in America, it is not the major issue affecting "Hispanic" voters. The major issues affecting the Latin or Hispanics or just plain Americans with a Spanish surname are the same problems all Americans have, We need better (paid) jobs, mortgages, be able to send our kids to college, etc. All of these needs become elusive for many due the same pervasive problems all Americans share, the great wealth gap, gender and race inequalities, and a failed system of government that fuels the great social divide. When Republicans willing to understand these issues, are ready to approach us inclusively, then perhaps not only "Latinos" but Asians, Africans, or other Americans will vote for them.

America is full of immigrants from cultures from all over the world. Why should the POTUS give special consideration to Latinos? It's not like Latinos are one voting block. Latinos who immigrate to this country need to learn to identify as Americans first. And the fact is, many do. The rest should follow their lead, as well as the lead of all other immigrants.
07:33 PM on 02/25/2012
The best way to connect with Latinos is to speak in their language, Spanish or if not additional Latino dialects such as French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian. Without these Romance dialects there cannot be anything Latino since the essence of the word is culture and language and not some imaginary skin condition.
09:00 PM on 02/25/2012
"The best way to connect with Latinos is to speak...Latin....Romanian."

Is this a joke?
10:18 PM on 02/25/2012
Intelligent people would look this up to find out. (Hint: it's no joke)
09:21 AM on 02/26/2012
No my friend it isn't a joke. In fact what people in this country are led to believe about certain ethnic grous is based on biased thinking of the sort one identifies mostly with illiterates and hoodwinkers of the grossest sort imaginable. Since you have access to the Internate look up the words Latium, Romance languages, Latin, and Latin Europe and you will be getting into the foundations of things Latino. That word if you can read is generic in the sense that it is used in the context of people grounded on issues Romanic which in this case would mean their language Latin hence the origins of Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese and Romanian. The problem with the United States is that it is mostly a culture of hate and defamation where education is limited to things politically correct and not educational or for that matter intellectual.
