The Visual Chronicles of the Urban Bicycle

Posted: 08/18/2012 5:20 pm

Today, across the world, in multiple contexts, the allure of the bicycle knows no bounds. For the past several years, I have been documenting this trend with my own photographs, in order to tell a short story with minimal words.

Commencing with the atmosphere of Florence, at night above, the images presented here provide multiple examples of the urban bicycle in practice, whether whimsical, functional or historical.

In European cities, original, wooden velocipedes are often on display.

In developing nations, bicycles not only transport people, but commodities to market.

In both cities and suburbs, bicycles stand in waiting for riders to complete business or pleasure.

From London to Lecce (in Southern Italy), bicycle sharing opportunities are on the rise.

Bicycles share the road on city streets, be they wide or narrow.

Where bicycles are prevalent, they must be repaired.

Bicycle riders both pose and admire as a matter of course.

In Canada and Italy, dedicated bicycle lanes offer safer travel.

Look up and you may see bicycles.

Display of both ordinary and famous bicycles is not uncommon.

Bicycling facilitates community.

Children play both on bicycles and nearby.

Amenities can be an important sidelight of urban bicycling in waterfront cities.

Finally, at day's end, a bicycle can stand guard over the napping rider.

"In Canada and Italy, dedicated bicycle lanes offer safer travel."

They have these in the US, too. Don't you know that?

wonderful collection of photos, thank you :)
I sold my car 18 months ago and have been getting around by bike since. It has made my world much bigger, more connected and so much more fun!

Without mentioning the recumbent bicycle, the article falls short of a chronicle.

There are bikes everywhere here in Japan, although not as many in the areas with lots of steep hills. There are quite large bike parking areas near a lot of stations. There are slots for hundreds, maybe thousands of bikes near my station, and most of them are filled.

People in cities with lots of hills just have to start thinking electric.
Yes being in shape will get you up the hill but many are discouraged
early. Electric lets you slide round the city getting getting great low impact
exercise! Not to mention riding up hill you feel like superman ;)

Really if your middle aged and looking to get out and about I highly recommend it.
Little mountain is just a playground.

Electric assist helps, but if the hills are steeper than about 15 degrees, it's easier to walk. I've been walking and taking public transportation since I came to Japan 17 years ago, and I really don't miss driving at all. Besides, I'm from NJ, where the "highways" are just really long, narrow parking lots. You move a few feet, wait, move a bit more, wait...

There is something happy about a bicycle. I don't think most Americans are ready for happiness, they like their misery too much.

One thing I notice riding around Vancouver are the happy cyclists, Some of them even talk to strangers which in Vancouver can be a shock!

"Americans are ready for happiness, they like their misery too much."

Speak for yourself. What a negative thing to say.

It is great to see these bikes. One type of bicycle which has not gotten much press yet is the electric bicycle. It makes bicycle commuting very viable. It is about the cleanest form of transportation there is as reported by Scientific American. Electric bicycles have been around for a good while, but in the last few years, thanks to lithium batteries, they have become practical for transportation. Over in China there has been an explosion of electric bicycles, around 100 million in use. They are rapidly gaining flavor in Europe with big increases in sales. Here in the US, sales are going slowly, but are increasing. One of problems with growth in the US is most people consider bikes for recreation not commuting. Electric cars have been very slow to sell, mainly because of high prices and limited range. This is not the problem with electric bicycles. Just about anyone can afford them and it cost only pennies to run them. They make very good sense if one has only 7 miles or less to commute. Because of the power of the electric motor it take very little effort to peddle and you don't get sweaty even on warm days. If electric bicycles get popular around the world, they might slow down global warming which is my hope. PS, they are very fun to ride!

There are several electric bicycles in the photos, can you spot them?

Remember your slip and slide as a kid? Well that feeling of effortless gliding can be your for hours at a time! They are not for lazy cyclists, They are for shoppers and students and sightseers and photographers the latter I highly suggest.

They are also a total hoot in the snow with the right studded tires and personal padding.
