Give Up -- Just Be Fat

It's pretty much useless to try and be thin if you don't have the (much coveted, soon to be cloned at a store near you) "thin gene." Based on a study of over 3,000 pairs of female twins -- the gold standard for both researchers and teenage boys -- scientists have concluded that over 50% of womens' variances in weight can be predicted just by looking at their genes. The remaining percentage can be predicted by looking at their jeans. (Sorry, that one just wrote itself. It's a gift and a curse.)

It's not all doom and gloom though. Prof. Livshits, lead researcher of the study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (2007), says, "The bad news is that many of our physical features, including our weight, are dependent on our genes. The good news is that women still have an opportunity to go against their genetic constitution and do something about it."

But lest that ray of hope be too cheerful, he adds, "It's important to not have high expectations. Women need to know that what they can do about their body weight -- especially when they age -- is relatively little, and they will do it only with much difficulty."

The proposed solution, of course, is to come up with a "thin gene" test to see who won the genetic lottery and who will be suing their parents in the near future for pre-gestational negligence. Officially the test will be used to let women know what kind of battle they'll be up against so they can decide if fighting themselves over every bite for the rest of their unnatural lives is worth it. (Strangely, the test is proposed just for women -- apparently men don't care if they are fat.) Unofficially, the test will be used to narrow down future presidential candidates, screen kiddies for the really good preschools, and select mail-order brides.

All snarking aside, if there really was a thin gene test would you take it? And would it finally release fat people from the lazy-no-willpower-fat-is-contagious stereotype that our society is so fond of -- or would it only make it easier to pick them out for vilification? One thing I do know -- marketers all over the country are having some very sweet dreams tonight.

Upgrade the quality of your food. If you don't know what that is by now (shame on you), see anything my Michael Pallan. Also see paleo/raw foods/caveman NUTRITION, NOT diet.

Run a daily caloric deficit that loses no more than 4-5 pounds/MONTH. That's 50 - 60 pounds/year. Is that enough?

Get back to us in 3 - 6 months.

Doesn't work? You didn't do it.

Ignore all the Tower of Medical/Fat Babble from fools like Livshits and similar ilk.

The Somalia post is right on the nose.

It's Michael Pollan - just in case anyone wants to look that up.

First off, there will be no flooding of this post with hate and vile insults. Not on my watch. Anyone with an opinion is welcome to state it in a respectful manner (AKA no baseball bats, even of the metaphorical variety...yeesh).

Secondly, except for jvarga, none of you answered my question! If the test becomes available would you take it? I really want to know what you think! What if a skinny person took it and discovered they have the thin gene- would it take away their sense of moral superiority? What if a fat person took it and discovered they have the thin gene - would they lose weight with this knowledge? So many questions, so few answers! I know you've got opinions:)

"I'll preempt all of the thin people who are gonna flood this post with hate and vile insults with a strong desire that you receive help for whatever deep seeded problem makes you psychotically angry at people who aren't thin. And also that I hope you get flat tires on your drive home"

jvarga-As a fluffy woman myself, I appreciate the sentiment. So glad you were quick enough to be the first comment. Thanks.

And yet, some years ago, practitioners of the Somalia Diet, including women and many folks previously described as 'big-boned', after three months of the program, looked just about identical except in height: dangerously stick-like and gaunt, due of course to having been starved. Take in fewer calories than you burn and you lose weight, or at the very least, gain none Take in more, and you don't. Simple, isn't it? It's physics.

But a zillion dollar weight-loss industry and a zillion over-zaftig people who don't believe in physics can surely be counted on to mischaracterize the phenomenon of weight gain, at which point it all becomes so complicated and difficult.

Now I'm going to duck, so as to avoid the inevitable missiles coming at me from all directions...

Fair enough, perhaps we should enact legislation that people over a certain BMI be allowed 200 calories a day. Would you sleep well at night? Maybe a better motivator would be if we let people like you walk around with baseball bats and you could bash 1 fat person a day in the face with it. Maybe the rest of us would learn then?

I have advocated the mistreatment of nobody, in any weight class. I'm merely pointing out the obvious, which you have conflated into some kind of attack against the fat folks of the world, among whom, if I read you correctly, you count yourself. The laws of physics are what they are; if you choose to believe they are a plot against you, so be it. But don't put a bat in my hand that I would never carry.

I would be concerned that I discovered a genetic pre-disposition to putting on weight and keeping it, it would result in my giving up on my efforts to control my weight. Then I'd end up weighing like 400 pounds and have significantly more health problems than I currently do. I'll stay overweight and miserable because eating salad for half my meals sucks and exercise is no fun in exchange for being super overweight and deathly ill but happy because I can eat food that makes me happy.

I'll preempt all of the thin people who are gonna flood this post with hate and vile insults with a strong desire that you receive help for whatever deep seeded problem makes you psychotically angry at people who aren't thin. And also that I hope you get flat tires on your drive home.
