If you haven't yet heard about the Congressman from Tennessee, you're in for a treat. Harold Ford Jr., campaigning to be a United States Senator, is a masterful communicator who focuses on solutions rather than partisan politics. In a state that traditionally leans to the right and Republican, Congressman Ford is a Democrat who skews more often to the middle. He's a bridge builder - a doer, and a consensus builder. This articulate, intelligent, highly approachable congressman wants to make a difference, and I got the impression listening to him speak the other night, that he's going to fulfill that mission. To many of his constituents in Tennessee, Harold Ford represents the one who is clearly different, and that's okay, for as he stated - Republicans are also supporting him in this campaign because they are ready to listen to something different.
Congressman Ford's stance on security is strong; he believes that government's first responsibility is to protect the American people. He knows we can't fight terrorism if we pay for both sides of the war, and therefore sees the importance of developing alternative energy sources so we can sustain and grow our economy without being dependent on Middle East oil. He also cares about kids and recognizes the value and power of early childhood education. The bi-partisan legislation he's sponsoring, the ASPIRE Act -- aims to provide each child born in America with an investment account...this is definitely an idea whose time has come.
I haven't been this fired up about a candidate in a long time, but Congressman Ford's voice is bold and clear, and his message is one we want to hear. I'm happy to do what I can to support his efforts. All Tennesseans will clearly be the beneficiaries of his dedication and intelligence, but the rest of the country will also profit from his leadership and obvious passion for the job. I think we'll hear a lot more about Harold Ford Jr., in the days ahead.
