How to Lose a Job in 13 Days?

?>
It was the last thing I expected to wake up to, and I'm still not entirely sure how to react.

This morning, CNN U.S. President Jon Klein announced that Ed Litvak -- Executive Producer of American Morning, my former supervisor, the man who fired me two weeks ago -- is resigning. He's leaving both the show and the network under circumstances which, even to the least cynical, would seem slightly suspect. The early inside line is that he's ready to do something that doesn't involve waking up at two in the morning, and Klein's official eulogy does little more than pump the requisite amount of platitudinal sunshine up the ass of the soon-to-be dearly departed without really shedding any light on why Ed is out.

You'd be a fool though not to take the timing, given recent events, into account.

Last week, I wrote a column that not only described in detail my final conversations with Ed Litvak as a CNN employee -- his decision to summarily terminate my employment as a producer, supposedly for maintaining a blog on my own time -- but also excoriated the management of American Morning and CNN in general. I did this because I believed at the time, and still do, that the once-venerated reputation of CNN -- to say nothing of its counterparts in TV news -- has been insouciantly stripped away through one dubious decision after another. I came to CNN four years ago because it was, in my mind, the gold standard of television news; I left believing something else entirely, and how I left has no bearing whatsoever on the issues confronting the network at the moment.

In the week since first publishing my article online, it's made the rounds to dozens of news outlets: I've been interviewed by NPR, Sirius Radio, The New York Times, The New York Observer and The Miami Herald; the story itself has appeared in The Huffington Post, The New York Daily News and on websites around the globe. A lot of people suddenly know Ed Litvak's name, and among those who have an opinion one way or the other, its connotation may not be a positive one.

I wasn't sure how I felt about such a possibility to begin with; now that Ed is being forced out of CNN, it really leaves a lot for me to ponder. And make no mistake, Ed is being forced out. He was appointed EP of American Morning in August of 2006, which means that he likely signed a two year contract at the very least. It's only February of 2008 -- that's damn early to tell someone under contract that he or she won't be renewed.

Although Ed's no doubt walking away with the severance that I was flatly denied -- he'll get what was left on his initial deal if nothing else -- I can certainly empathize: he got screwed by CNN. The irony would be delicious if the whole situation weren't so unfortunate for all involved. The last thing I'm going to do right now is gloat or gravedance, regardless of whether Ed Litvak was wholly to blame for the decision to fire me.

The question is simple though: Was this a case of post hoc ergo propter hoc? Did what happened to me two weeks ago -- the firing itself or the publicity that followed -- have anything at all to do with Ed's own "resignation?"

There are a few possibilities:

The most vocal of my supporters throughout this miasma would probably like to believe that the CNN big shots never authorized firing me and are now making Ed pay dearly for getting rid of an irreplacable doll like myself; needless to say, this is wrong on all counts (although that kind of thinking is certainly appreciated). Ed may have been the one to swing the axe but the execution order was likely a committee ruling that involved at least a manager or two somewhere above his pay grade. Is it possible that a decision was made to fire me and Ed made the "mistake" of not handling it better -- in other words, not offering me something that might presumably encourage me to keep my big mouth shut? Could be. An offer of money in return for the signing of a non-disclosure agreement -- considering that I was a blogger with a relatively large audience, even at the time -- would've been a wise move (though one I honestly can't say I'd have agreed to). It's a fact that my dismissal and subsequent decision to speak my mind about it and what I believe are the problems with American Morning brought scandal to the show and the network, whether you agree with my assessment or not. It cast Ed Litvak and the rest of the show's management team in a bad light and drew negative publicity to a show that's fighting for every rating point it can get. In other words, my comments -- however ineffectual in the big picture -- came at a time when AM really didn't need them. If that's the case, was Ed nothing more than a scapegoat? Did upper-management punish him for not knowing that I'd spent the past year-and-a-half writing outside of CNN in the first place -- for being ignorant of what the people right under his nose were up to?

Back to those ratings though, because they could be the key -- since they typically are. It's true that AM's numbers are less-than-stellar, despite the hard work of a lot of talented rank-and-file people behind the scenes. Maybe Ed's time was simply up; he'd given it his best shot and hadn't fully delivered, so Klein wrote up some glowing prose about all his efforts and sent him on his way. If that's true, then the timing of this morning's announcement is nothing more than a hell of a coincidence, albeit one that once again proves CNN management apparently has its head firmly in its ass, since people now can't help but ask if Ed Litvak's ouster has any connection to mine. If this is indeed a Klein mandate, you'd think he would've at least waited a few more weeks; doing this now looks bad for Ed and for CNN. Then again, Klein is the same guy who canceled Crossfire because Jon Stewart said it was a ridiculous show. (He was right by the way.) Did my calling attention to the problems on the show force Klein to take a closer look at what was going on there? If so, that would seem to vindicate me, as Ed's firing proves my claim that the show is a mess.

Many of the American Morning staff believed for some time that Ed was on his way out; maybe the fallout from my dismissal was the final nail in his coffin -- what drove him into "early retirement."

Or maybe not.

Like I said, we'll probably never know.

My only hope is that Ed Litvak's departure from American Morning will somehow be good for the show, although I'm inclined to think that until someone puts an arm around Jon Klein, writes something nice about him, then pushes him out the door, nothing's going to change. It'll just be more of the same nonsense.

Whoever replaces Ed Litvak though, I wish him or her the best.

You've got a great staff and a great pedigree -- now go make us all proud.

"gold standard of news" and CNN in the same sentence ?

Perhaps you meant the "American Dollar of News".

I'm sorry you lost your job, however, I'm sure you will end up landing on your feet.

Good luck

"Gold Standard" yes, but of American News only these days. Let's just say that Yanks don't set the bar too high when it comes to news. In fact they seem to set it low on purpose.

At one time they were a good network, perhaps one of the best, but they did it with an underdog attitude and bucket full of cash. Since the departure of TT, they have been just another American Network. Britney, anyone?

When CNN lets someone like Lou Dobbs anchor their afternoon, a repulsive personality even beyond his politics, something is really wrong with the once
proud network.

Truth throughout the media now is about survival. Smaller audiences, less revenue.

Loou Dobbs is the one of very few good people who inform this country of what is going on behind our backs in Government. This administration has destroyed our country and some of you just don't want to hear it. So much for open minds.
WE are headed for a major depression, meaning you may be out on the street pounding the pavement for a job, losing your house, or working for meager pay like the illegal aliens are being subjected to, all so corporations can rape this country and take out the middle class, who pay most of the taxes collected. Do some research instead of listening to the idiots who have stolen your mind. Watch BBC and PBS once in awhile and get informed. America is dying a slow death and the media is just helping it along.

I agree with everything you said except that Dobs is a good "people." I think he is right about a lot of stuff and still a bigot. Which is not to say that he is mostly alright. It could be argued that his obsession with illegal immigration has been spun as bigoted when perhaps it is only a mean spirited way of describing an economic effect.

And who might be behind this spin? Well ... his views on corporations seems to be dead on.
02:04 AM on 02/27/2008
You know... I never cease to be amazed at the kind of vitriol that is heaped on Lou Dobbs by those who have demonstrably never watched a weeks worth of his shows. Here is a guy (Lou Dobbs) who has stated for years that the Corporatocracy is ruining America, is in kahoots with the government, and that they would destroy the economy. Was he wrong? Here is a guy who has said for years that uncontrolled immigration would lower our salaries, overburden our social services, and cause a crisis in government... was he wrong there either? He has been consistently against outsourcing, decrys the lack of Congressional oversight, reports constantly on the incompetence of the government, and has personally taken to task various polititians on air for their positions that hurt the middle class. If there is one guy on TV "news" that I can for a moment believe is on MY side, it is Lou Dobbs.

Where have you been in the past four years? You are not talking about CNN that was there, where ever "there" was and then turned conservative right wing. Instead of bringing news important to us, it shows non essential accidents somewhere in Georgia? While one of the most important scandals plays out in Europe showing the rich getting richer illegally, we see snow and ice in the Mid West. How could you ever hire gas bags like Glenn Beck or filter the news down to the trivial. I looked at cnn.com or watches CNN when it showed critical journalism, but now I turn to the BBC News or to reuters or other source because I need to find news not gossip.

Yes, the BBC and CBC and sometimes PBS, but for the latest in factual research and analysis into the American political scene I find the Guardian in England a dead on source. They actually put reporters on the ground and pound some shoe leather in America. And they get exclusives that are ignored here. If they hadn't been then Chimpy the Prez would never have been elected.

You have only to take a quick look at who owns CNN,

and you'll see that they're the same folks up to their neck in AMBAC, MBIA, Standard & Poors etc, etc, etc. The gold standard turned out to be fool's gold.

Journalism? There is no journalism left in the United States when it comes to the media corporatacracy. It's all about money. The people's right-to-know be damned. American media journalism died when Walter Cronkite left the air. Since then its simply become a fight over right-wing $$$$. Don't watch any of it anymore except PBS and BBC.

Actually the peoples right to know died after Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow passed on their mantles. It died when Ronnie Raygun, in his infitisimal wisdom, overturned the fairness doctrine and rushed in deregulation at the FCC, thus ushering media consolidation and such literary luminaries as Rush Limpballs.

Balancement you should also add the CBC and Al Jazeera english to your list. I also like the Guardian. One thing is true, news is non existent in the US.

After the ridicoulous Obama poll, CNN now stands for Circulating Nothing Newsworthy. They are just another Fox Republican machine tied at the hip with the criminal GWB regime. They cannot and should not be trusted in any way, shape, or form. I have no idea who you are, Chez, but I do know who CNN is, just another outlet for Republican propaganda.
11:34 AM on 02/26/2008
You write beautifully. Write a book....you could make any subject interesting.

Thanks for sharing. I am sure it was cathartic.
10:31 AM on 02/26/2008
Repeat after me -- CNN is not now, and never was, the "gold standard of news". The lineup and emphasis guarantee the distorted focus on fluff we have come to expect from corporate media in an era of excessive consolidation...different only in degree and in the identity of those who call the shots from the Pravdas of old.

BBC, NPR, and a host of European, Canadian, Aussie and other outlets (not to mention portions of the blogosphere) bring a far greater sense of proportion, balance, objectivity and depth of anlaysis to the news.

American Morning could disappear in its entirety tomorrow, and the fallout would be imperceptible in comparison to the prospect of BBC or NPR going away. Just get over yourselves. I don't give a crap about your palace politics, and I suspect no one does outside your incestuous little crowd.
12:17 PM on 02/26/2008
Amen... CNN is a joke compared to the analysis and depth of the BBC and NPR.
02:27 AM on 02/27/2008
Though I must agree that at this time CNN has fallen into a hole from which it will be nearly impossible to extricate it (with the possible exception of Lou Dobbs and Jack Cafferty), there was a time in the beginning when they actually reported world news. No one wants to hire and pay for real reporters anymore in this country, or allow any of them to actually REPORT the news, and only those old newsmen who still linger on have any relevence. Our Democratic Republic depends on an informed populace and we are being poorly served by ALL the media in this regard. Executions are in order! (Ok Ok, I'll except hash language and firings, but you get the picture!)

Well said, Chez, you rise above the smallness and mean-spirited attitudes of those that might feel EVERY message from anyone 'not' msm, must be controlled or even suppressed, especially those contrary to their 'powers that be'.

ALL msms news outlets are now compromised by their sycophancy to status quo, business-as-usual, beltway career politicians and agendas. It's just NOT an environment where journalists and persons of conscience, can thrive and express 'themselves', if it ever really was.

ALL the best to you, friend, and just the opposite for those small-minded, self-deluded, protectors of the 'powers-that-be'.

Mr. Pazienza:

I'm glad you are having your moment to gloat after being fired (definitely one of the world's worst feelings), but word to the wise: CNN has never been "the gold standard of tv news." Compared to, say, BBC World, CNN is a national embarrassment.
12:48 AM on 02/27/2008
Dear Mr. Pazienza;

As the above forum-user named, "ReedMaker," typed, being fired is one of the world's world's worst feelings." My apologies.

What we have CNN and other broadcast-networks and entertainment congloms is a struggle with ideology. I'm typing this directly into the edit-box, without faking 'perfection' by using spell-checkers or syntax-correctors, so be forgiving, please..
It's difficult to find the correct words, as it's a complex issue. Think of it this way:.
IN slavery-days, slave-owners said, "it's up to us light/wholesome/godly-good/just/POSITIVE-people to put those dark/inferior/unwholesome/NEGATIVE-people in their rightful place." Same justification positive-people use to put women 'in-their-place' to this day.

Being 'positive' was always about HATE, about DIVIDING communities into ever-increasing numbers of squabbling-TRIBES, instead of UNITING 'tribes'/teams/families/communities/countries/worlds in PeaceOnEarth as commanded.

Segregation was Positives AGAINST Negatives.
Not allowing women to divorce, work, own homes, be Presidents, or at one time VOTE FOR PRESIDENTS, was always about POSITIVES AGAINST NEGATIVES.

But today, once again, the hateful ideology of NegativePositive-ism DIVIDES us. It's presented in very subtle-ways, insidious ways, a nefarious 'black/dark/negative' cloud dividing society, proving NegativePositive-ism is the formula for HATE.

But, "Must be positive-minded!" and "positive-developments" is now the mantra to DIVIDE in subtle-ways, as it always has been, yet the DISSENTING OPINION to defend against that subtle-hatefulness is being CENSORED in subtle-ways as well, even though it CURES that hatefulness.

Nobody is 'perfect.' Nothing is. We just strive to do the best we can with the tools we've got, the people we've got, regardless of color or talent or education or credentials or anything else. We'e all EQUAL, neither 'negative' nor 'positive,' and once we start saying otherwise, we DIVIDE, and those defending against it are descended against by a pack of rabid POSITIVE_DOGS.

Kind Regards,
3Ons

Or, a little to the north, CBC. "Newsworld" is CBC's 24-hour news channel. To compare it with CNN is to compare Hemingway with a little boy writing dirty words on an alley wall.
09:23 AM on 02/26/2008
I ead your previous blogs and I honestly think people like you are a part of the problem at CNN. I stopped watching American Morning when they replaced Soledad O"Brien ( the best interviewer on cable news) with the Faux News Model Kiran Chentry. I only occasionally watch The Situation Room because of Cafferty and I have a feeling they are going to get rid of Cafferty soon after WATCHING HIM GO OFF ON MCCAIN YESTERDAY, he is too independent for that network, everyone else over there is a right wing tool.

CNN dosn't even report on Iraq anymore, I have to watch PBS and Al Jazeera English on youtube to get objective analysis and learn what is really going on in Iraq. What ever happened to Michael Ware?
09:45 AM on 02/26/2008
Exactly, what ever happened to Michael Ware - a dedicated war journalist in every sense of the word? Did he fall out of favor with Mr. Klein? Were the facts he presented not in keeping with the "truth" Mr. Klein and Mr. Blitzer are trying to sell? Does Mr. Klein think we viewers out in tv land are all that stupid that we didn't notice his absence?
08:34 AM on 02/26/2008
Chez,

I think you're reading too much into this. Your story reveals what kind of integrity vacuum exists at CNN and most other "established" news organizations. Your firing and Ed's firing are more the symptom than the cause. This story clearly suggests that if you are a journalist who takes his profession and career seriously, YOU ARE BETTER OFF LOOKING ELSEWHERE FOR EMPLOYMENT - CNN IS NOT A COMPANY THAT VALUES AND SUPPORTS JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY. Like so many others in the "news business" these days, CNN is more interested in towing a party line for business and ratings. The problem CNN has with someone like you and your story is that it has the potential of drying up its supply of dedicated, honest professional journalists with which to use and abuse. If that happens, it winds up like Fixed News - a company that has to resort to attaching the phrase "fair and balanced" to its title everywhere to counter the widely held belief that it is a second class pr firm for hire.

A few years ago the original owner of Lands' End sold his company to Sears. I worked part-time for Sears for about five years and observed how they screwed the pooch the entire time due to high level corporate decisions. As a Lands' End customer, I warned a CSR about my experience during an order. Fortunately, the owner repurchased Lands' End before too much damage was done. Ted Turner should never have sold CNN to Time-Warner. Maybe he will correct that mistake.

Were it not for Cafferty, CNN (CliNtoN) would be the exact opposite of Faux News. Someone should hire McCafferty while he still has some dignity.

And note to Wolf, "Clinton's press secretary probably wouldn't be a man."
01:25 PM on 02/26/2008
You couldn't be more off the mark about CNN being the opposite of Faux News. CNN has been nothing more than an embarrassing shill for years now. About 10-15 years ago, they gave up even pretending to be about journalism. If you want the antithesis of Faux News, try Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman. CNN isn't even close.
