The White Knight Rises

Posted: 06/06/2012 3:11 pm

The important thing to keep in mind as you watch Mitt Romney's brand new campaign ad -- the one that officially kicks off his general election push for the White House -- is that everything you're seeing, and not seeing, is intentional. We've witnessed some pretty impressive missteps and gaffes from the Romney camp over the last several months, but make no mistake: The advertising of a presidential candidate is a tightly choreographed piece of theater where nothing is done spur-of-the-moment and nothing is left to chance. Penetrating the psychology of your target audience is too important -- that audience is always shown exactly and only what the campaign and its promotional team want it to see.

What this means is that it's not an accident that every face you see in Romney's new "Promise of America" ad is white. Every single one. Though there may be the back of a head shown for a split-second, there isn't a person of color's face to be found in the two-and-a-half minute spot that features Mitt Romney, all chiseled central casting looks and very carefully edited diction, vowing to restore our country to its former greatness as Hans Zimmer-style orchestration swells to a sweeping crescendo. And again, while over the next week or so you might hear a lot of people talk about how this is a huge oversight on the part of the Romney campaign, it absolutely is not. It's exactly according to plan. Because Romney knows who he has to win over in a commanding way and right out of the gate -- white, Christian middle-Americans either outwardly reeling or quietly concerned over what they see happening to "their" country.

Only breathtaking incompetence on the part of Team Romney would lead to a campaign ad in which a substantial portion of the electorate -- one growing at an exponential rate -- wasn't represented at all, even in the interest of cynical pandering. Sure, Romney spokesman Eric Fehnstrom screwed up royally by coming right out and admitting that his guy is an "Etch-a-Sketch" who can erase his positions and draw entirely new ones at will, but that was an off-the-cuff comment -- this is a carefully constructed promotional campaign. And what the Romney camp is saying with this is unmistakable: Regardless of the rise in status that minorities have enjoyed over the past few decades, culminating in the election of a black man to the highest office in the land, good, old-fashioned white people are still the backbone of this country -- the "real" Americans. No, Romney isn't denigrating black and brown people -- not directly -- he's simply and subtly letting it be known to those who need to hear it that when he talks about restoring our country, he means going back to a 1950s, Pleasantville vision of America -- a time before, well, everything became so darned complicated and less "pleasant" because minorities suddenly seemed to be a powerful cultural and political force throughout the nation.

For the very specific audience Romney is attempting to appeal to in the "Promise of America" ad, there's an original sin to blame for the tumultuous times our country has been forced to endure recently, one that wasn't a singular event but has instead played out over several decades. That sin: change -- progress. Specifically the loss of influence by the people who had traditionally been in control of the nation and who could rest comfortably in the privilege bequeathed to them by God and the founders -- coincidentally, people who looked very much like the smiling faces featured in the Romney ad.

Romney has made it clear right off the bat: He's reaching out to white America.

And that may wind up making it pretty clear what the choice is for everyone else this November.

I agree with you. Romney is a spoiled rich boy that wants to be president.

This ad is video documentation of how incredibly out of touch Mr. Romney is. Even the most recent Census provide statistical data showing that America is a colorful rainbow of many people from many nationalities. The fact Mr. Romney's staff failed to capture this beautiful reality is...well it is disgusting and incredibly disheartening.”

Women, beware also. Just quickly scrolling through this a couple of times, any portrayal of people at work -- men (white, of course). Thus, returning to the "glorious" 50's means barefoot and pregnant at home supporting the guys while they do their thing.

Well just look at all of the folks like Karl Rove and his Temple that are supporting him. I don't think there are a lot of millionaires and billionaires of color that are supporting him. He cannot relate to people of color anymore than the average white person. The only middle class are the tea naggers, it's kind of a racial thing. Lets not forget the birthas, they are in all classes!

I think this assessment is spot on!

OMG! Did you notice that the BARN was white, and the walls in the HALLWAY were white? I'm sure that was subliminal, too.

As a black woman I call bs on this one. He's appealing to his base, which is old white males who are either extremely wealthy or working class. You're talking about a bunch where some don't think black/brown people should even be citizens. They're his voters, who else should he be speaking to? This country will be brown in a generation, let them have their last gasp.

You dont appeal to your base, they are already voting for you. Thus the word base not even mentioned in the article. You appeal to those on the fence and the author is right. "Middle" America is skeptical of Romney, though ironically mostly because he is Mormon.

He will not get the black, latino, gay, vets, or women votes he will need to win. The GOP are lost and have no leader with any brain, so I say let's remove as many as possible and put in Repubs that want to work with the Dems to get laws done. It is all their fault - the GOP and Mittens. They are worthless!!!! Get rid of the Tbaggers. They are no good!!!

I think it can be argued that the majority of registered independents are white and that is what GOP candidates generally need to sway a national election.

The next five months will be a lesson to many in this country. Much like that Katrina moment many AA people had several years ago. We always knew on an individual, conceptual level how many felt about us, but seeing it played out on national teevee, in all its glory, in living color was such a blow to our collective esteem. We saw it again when the prez was conducting his first campaign. The deep-seated, gut-wrenching hatred that some people feel about people of color. While this is painful to watch and hurtful to hear, at least you know full well where these people stand. No guessing needed.

Now we have what I find most frightening of all--a man running for president who has deeply-held beliefs about the "place" that people of color hold in his life and in this country. He's showing his base that he understands how we strayed from the proper path when their complacency allowed that travesty to take place in 2008. No need to scream out racial epithets. He's quietly showing you exactly what his America looks like--the real one--the America founded on the principle of white equals power, privilege and prestige. While color equals subservience and even non-existence. Complete with swelling, orchestral accompaniment and amber waves of grain.

If people felt like that he wouldn't have won. Your opinions are tedious, incorrect and add nothing positive to the discussion.
05:56 PM on 06/07/2012
Perhaps your experience is not my experience. But I fail to see how an opinion can be incorrect, even if you don't agree. There's not a whole of lot of positive feelings you can have after reading the article and seeing the video. Unless you like living in a in world that seeks to exclude you.

"New Romney Ad Features Zero People of Color"

Why of course NOT, any person of color with common sense doesn't wish to associate and you can clearly say thats a reverse perception from the Romney camp as well.........

Romney's ad says nothing, only bumper sticker slogans, it's empty just like him. I also got a sense from the ad that only he and his special group really "love America". Naseating

They only love a certain America. Not the one that would dare to put a man of color in the whitehouse. That is a travesty that must be white washed like that barn.

My Black NY Dad married a White woman 30 years ago.
Her New Hampshire conservative Father promptly disowned her.
He apologized on his deathbed.
The thing is..their children were welcomed in both families.
The Romney silent call to go back to the good old days will not work.
Too many mixed families..even the celebrities adopt mult-iculturally now.
We have come way too far to turn back.

Cant remember who it was (sorry) but it was either Cornel West or Michael Eric Dyson who said on Real Time with Bill Maher that when Americans start intermingling more and having more and more biracial/multiracial children, racism will slowly die away. Based on the idea that humans have difficulty relating to those that dont look like us, etc. Ex - Natalee Holloway was America's child but not the black girl that disappeared around the same time. I agree with him, whichever one said it! =)
