Oprah Now Doing Meatless Monday

Posted: 02/ 4/11 07:07 AM ET

Did she really say that? Did she actually say those words? I was left with this uneasy sensation as the commercials flickered on the screen. I looked around the room, still in shock, wondering what this could ultimately mean.

Oprah had just described the Harpo Vegan Challenge, where all 378 of her staff members went vegan for an entire week to highlight the health and environmental benefits of plant-based foods. She was in her office with her producers and with author Kathy Freston, whose new book, Veganist, had spurred the Challenge. But it was what Oprah said at the end of the segment that took me by surprise.

If you're referring to her comment about getting sued, I think she was referring to her prior history of getting sued by the meat lobby for comments she made implying that meat was not healthy.

It's a shame that someone with the clout to influence people's eating habits, like Oprah, has to restrain her comments because of the fear of getting sued. What's laughable is that the people who sued her where from Texas, and no doubt staunch Republicans.

I think it would be nice if you could actually include the shocking statement in print for those of us at work who cannot link to the video due to filters...

For those who want to have a meatless Monday (or any other day for that matter), but may be having problems going vegan I would like to suggest an alternative - a traditional vegetarian diet with organic eggs and/or dairy. This is a great way to eat in itself or serve as a step toward a vegan diet. The cookbook, "American Wholefoods Cuisne" has been serving as "the vegetarian 'Joy of Cooking'" since 1983 will be very helpful with its 1300 recipies.
