Charlie Crist Isn't Gay, Okay?

Florida's bachelor Governor Charlie Crist is getting married, and to a woman, too. That's how badly he wants to be vice president. I hope John McCain is happy now.

I hope Crist isn't making a mistake by trying too hard. Men don't want anything they can get too easy. On the other hand, men lose interest quickly.

Of course, the human heart is curved like a road through the mountains, so what do I know? Maybe it's love. And maybe it's just a joyous coincidence that Crist has found it at exactly the same time that McCain is looking for a running mate.

Sometimes things just work out.

It's like that federal ban on off shore drilling. When Crist ran for governor in 2006, he supported it. Now John McCain wants it repealed and (weird!) two weeks ago, Crist realized that he did too.

Florida is a swing state -- Haha! Get it? -- and Crist has a popularity rating of something like 70%. He also gets a lot of the credit for delivering the state to McCain in the primaries. There's only one nagging thing keeping him from being the obvious choice for the vice presidency: He comes off kinda gay.

But then, suddenly last Thursday, after thirty years of the single life, Crist discovered that he couldn't live without a woman named Carole Rome, a divorced mother of two. It sounds improbable to me, but then so did the Sex and the City movie. If those nice monsters can find love, why not?

Maybe it's not all politics of the most ghastly, obvious, self-hating, the fix-is-in, trick-the-rubes kind. Maybe I'm too cynical. Maybe love is real and coincidence is an illusion. Luck -- who said that? -- is believing that you're lucky.

Maybe what we're smelling is the powerful odor of synchronicity.

--

Here's the part that Tennessee Williams would have really liked: Gov. Crist's intended, Carole Rome, inherited - and runs -- one of America's oldest Halloween costume companies. The woman marrying the gayish governor from the sultry southern state actually makes beards.

Poor guy, either he is gay and feels so bad about it he needs to get married, or he isn't gay and is just, I know this is mean, a REPUBLICAN!

Governor Bush bought his "beloved" Crawford Ranch to run for President. Christ has found a "beloved" to help him politically too. So?

His little fishing expedition will not stop the Monty 'Blew Wind' Skeezes from showing up to tell us all about old CristCo.

IIs there anyt other type of Republican other than a hypocritical one? Ironically Charlie Crist would probably help the GOP more as a VP if he came out of the closet & ran as openly gay.

So I propose a new organization for the Republican Party - we all know about the Log Cabin Republicans - those openly gay members of the party that loves them - loves to beat them about the head and shoulders every election cycle.

The new organization would be (drum roll, please) the IVORY CLOSET REPUBLICANS - for those dudes in the GOP who are so not gay - Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Lindsey Graham, Ken Mehlman, Ralph Reed, and Charlie (but look I have a girl friend) Crist. Did I forget Mitch McConnell?

It will give them some place to gather and work on their stories when they get caught in their lies like Foley and Craig - also a place where women willing to front for gays can get registered. They can even get a club house and think of it - they probably wont have to pay for an interior decorator.

(With apologies to all other gays - closeted and otherwise - who are not raging hypocrites.)

that's why they're calling Obama 'the abortion president' McCain will be the 'gay president' because not only is every GOP man closeted, one who just slammed and locked the closet door is actually going to be his running mate.

He is gay, ok. No doubt.

Floridians are proud to have many gays in the state (we know who they are) and in the gov't. No problem. What we won't do anymore is provide cover for republican gays who go against GLBT's in legislation, votes, the environment, health care or any other issue that affects gays. It's a small world, and an even smaller one for gays, especially here in Florida.

Good luck, Crist (hee hee). Should be fun to watch.

If Charlie Crist is gay, then I'm a duck.

Quack!

I feel compelled to comment. Let me say right off the bat, I am a conservative. I check out this site (and many others) to see what Left-Wing Americans are thinking about the news of the day. I just wanted to let you know where I'm coming from...

What the f*#%?!? It never occurred to me that Charlie Crist might be gay. I don't care. Nobody I know cares. Are Democrats the sole possessors of "gaydar"?

Would it matter to me? No. (I voted for Ed Koch twice, not withstanding Bess Myerson acting as a beard)

Good Lord, you people are obsessed with homosexuality!

What we are obsessed with is hypocritical behavior.

Coming from a conservative, this is truly laughable.

It might not matter to a New York Conservative like you, but you can be sure it matters to Southern Conservatives like those in Florida, Georgia, Texas and Mississippi.

With conservatives it boils down to this: Our gays are okay because they are decently closeted. Your gays are bad.

And for progressives--the rights that progressives favor are more important than the rights that conservatives like--like all the complaints over the Heller decision by many of the same people that are screaming bloody murder over FISA.

It isn't the Democrats who stomp on the rights of gays. It is the Republicans. Of course you don't care about someone else's sexuality, but you will deny them equal citizenship.

You're out of line here. I'm not looking to deny anyone "equal citizenship".

I'm from New Jersey, so you might have a difficult time convincing me that just because some Governor or other is married that ipso facto they cannot be GAY.

I'm also from NJ - the sad thing is that the man can't just be who he probably is - who cares who he sleeps with if he is a good Governor?

good point--as a Republican, I would rather have a governor of either sex in a committed relationships (any combo of sexes) that is honest and protects the Constitution than a swinger.,

Doesn't Crist get engaged everytime he's running for office? I've heard he's been engaged about 6-7 times and married only once for about 9 months. He must really want the Veep spot with John McBush and worries that the Repub fundie nuts won't approve of his "lifestyle"......not that there's anything wrong with that.

I really don't care if Crist is gay. I really don't. I've read a number of blogs about him, Lindsey Graham, Dennis Hastert, and other Republican lawmakers who are "supposedly" closeted. Who cares. If its true, let them deal with that.

What's outrageous is their excitement for a party that is gleefully running this country in the ground, and, in doing so, ruining their political "brand" for at least a generation.

I don't care what sexual orientation a person is live and let live but if a person has to disguise or lie about it then you can pretty much surmise that they will do anything no holds barred. I for one don't think that makes an ideal situation for someone representing their fellow citizens.

not being open about their being gay can only lead to problems later on ... imagine a scenario when a less than ethical business person drops some pictures on the Gov.'s or Senator's desk and says, you vote the way I want or else.

NOW, we have a problem. and I'm not even going to get into the whole hypocritical aspect of being against gay rights and being in the closet themselves.

Actually, that's exactly the reason why the NSA won't hire *closeted* gays. If you're gay, but totally open and honest about it, then you're elligible. They don't want anyone with "secrets" that can be used to blackmail or manipulate them.

SeanGardner: The problem is that republicans are homophobic and they use this to get out the right wing lunatic fringe evangelicals by gay bashing. They are total hypocrites and they need to be exposed as such.

Can anyone point me to a site that proves unconditionally that this man is gay? Huffpo claims to be all about letting people be people, except when they 're republicans. BTW.........do you think there's never been a closeted democrat? If so, do some googling.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:47 AM on 07/07/2008

Lemme explain this to you. See, it's like this.... The republicans use gay bashing as a wedge issue, all the while, many, many republicans are living a closeted gay lifestyle. When we illustrate this truth, we are pointing out a very stark hypocrisy and morally bereft con job being perpetrated on the American people. Folks need to see that they are being played and lied to. If the repugs will lie about their own lifestyles, they will lie about anything. Nobody really cares about closeted gay democrats, because democrats don't make their political living by bashing and marginalizing gay folks. If a democrat wants to, he can live openly as gay, and some do. Generally as a democrat, being outed does not end your political career. As a republican, it usually does, as it should. Not because there is anything wrong with being gay, but because the outed repug is then shown as a hypocrite. Understand?
