Florida's bachelor Governor Charlie Crist is getting married, and to a woman, too. That's how badly he wants to be vice president. I hope John McCain is happy now.
I hope Crist isn't making a mistake by trying too hard. Men don't want anything they can get too easy. On the other hand, men lose interest quickly.
Of course, the human heart is curved like a road through the mountains, so what do I know? Maybe it's love. And maybe it's just a joyous coincidence that Crist has found it at exactly the same time that McCain is looking for a running mate.
Sometimes things just work out.
It's like that federal ban on off shore drilling. When Crist ran for governor in 2006, he supported it. Now John McCain wants it repealed and (weird!) two weeks ago, Crist realized that he did too.
Florida is a swing state -- Haha! Get it? -- and Crist has a popularity rating of something like 70%. He also gets a lot of the credit for delivering the state to McCain in the primaries. There's only one nagging thing keeping him from being the obvious choice for the vice presidency: He comes off kinda gay.
But then, suddenly last Thursday, after thirty years of the single life, Crist discovered that he couldn't live without a woman named Carole Rome, a divorced mother of two. It sounds improbable to me, but then so did the Sex and the City movie. If those nice monsters can find love, why not?
Maybe it's not all politics of the most ghastly, obvious, self-hating, the fix-is-in, trick-the-rubes kind. Maybe I'm too cynical. Maybe love is real and coincidence is an illusion. Luck -- who said that? -- is believing that you're lucky.
Maybe what we're smelling is the powerful odor of synchronicity.
--
Here's the part that Tennessee Williams would have really liked: Gov. Crist's intended, Carole Rome, inherited - and runs -- one of America's oldest Halloween costume companies. The woman marrying the gayish governor from the sultry southern state actually makes beards.

If he were able to get elected as a bachelor, why can't he be on the ticket as one? The repubs are ridiculous if he's being pressured to be a family man inorder to be VP. And he's stupid if he buys into it. Therefore, I'm saying that this rush, rush engagement is very suspect. I mean he went 30+ years without finding the woman and now he can find the woman of his dreams in 10 months. Something ain't clean in the water.
Wow. The tolerance here is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Keep up the great work, liberals!
Wow. Wow. Wow.
The little metaphor doesn't really work. Do you mean that there is less tolerance than you could shake a stick at?
Hmm. I'm not sure that really works, either.
I agree -- and I have no information that Crist is or isn't gay. But there have been so many closeted Republican trolls (Mark Foley, anyone?) that it makes it plausible. And frankly, anyone in the 21st century that would hate him or her self enough to remain closeted while publicly railing against the "gay lifestyle" (how dare they want to get MARRIED, and have KIDS... oh, wait, that's the straight lifestyle. ..) while privately living a double life is not to be trusted as dogcatcher much less veep. Oh, and if it matters, I'm gay -- I just don't have any sympathy anymore for closeted right-wingers. I realize that by staying in the shadows to avoid prejudice, we let our enemies define us and never let people get to know us as your neighbors, lawyers, teachers, doctors, friends and family. Believe me, it makes for interesting political arguments.
If he is gay and hiding it, It's about hypocrisy and nothing else and that's why you don't get it. It's lying about the most fundamental thing in your life in order for acceptence and power. Who wants someone willing to do anything representing them?
"Wow. The tolerance here is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Keep up the great work, liberals!"
publically /political ly protected.
/fearfully feel they MUST lead lonely, loveless lives -- cowering in marriages of concealment -- to satisfy SANCTIMONIOUS sexual sensitivities.
THANKS to the GREAT work of LIBERALS, the "love that dare not speak its name" can be proudly proclaimed, and privately/
TRAGIC are the "not gay, never been gay" Americans who faithfully
so now being gay is perfectly ok with conservatives? Just need to know why they would talk and act like gays are just one step down from serial killers, but they are just fine to run for public office. If there's nothing wrong with being gay, why don't you, McCain, and Hagee say so?
I can't wait to see a debate between the swishy Crist and someone like Webb or Dodd.
That will play well to the "working-class" voters of the American "Center".
What fun it is to watch the Republicans tie themselves in knots trying to be what they are "knot".
Not only did that queen Crist get a wife, he got 2 kids thrown in to boot. LOL If McCain picks him as his VP running mate, all kinds of questions from the press should come up as to the convenience of Crist's marriage, and there should be another man or two or three or more coming forward to drag Crist out of the closet with claims of having slept with him. Fortunately, the GOP won't be able to stifle that kind of news. McCain and Crist. One once a prisoner of of war and the other a prisoner of homophobia.
("That queen Crist"? Really?)
(That's "queen" like gay. Not "queen" like Elizabeth. )
Steamboater!!! You don't have to worry about the news because, they are blind and deaf when it comes to reporting the facts when a Rethuglican is involved.. They are GIRLIE MEN AND WEAR A MUZZLE OVER THEIR MOUTH... I wouldn't doubt it if they wear panties like the girls do...The MSM is a joke. Let's see what comes out of this Charlie Christ news, and how much of it they will report...
As a Floridian there had always been the rumor that Crist is Gay. I didn't vote for him. Not because I thought he was Gay but because I didn' think he was the right choice and now that he has flip-flopped on the oil drilling just to be VP, I know I was right. He does not care about Florida. We are a pawn in his game.
I live in FL. Charlie is doing a good job, but he wont get my vote to change.
America only has one real choice for change
United we stand
DIvided we fall
Obama 08
The Republican Party is chock-a-block with closet cases. Half the Republicans in the US Senate are closet cases... at least two major Republican governors are closet cases... tons of Republican congressmen are closet cases... It's really quite surreal. And as a gay man, I find it terribly depressing. Why can't these guys just COME OUT????
Hi hep, I lived in Fla. for years, and yes Christ is gay ,the r,s tried very hard to pretend otherwise and the dems having had enough of bush didn't care. Now all can see just how far reps will go to get elected, Crist is truly supporting his party,do dems go this far?MCane shot down and sent to a prison camp but Crist tops him giving up his soul for the rep party.gaby
Hep!!! They cannot get out of the closet.... because, they threw out the door knob!!! and now they cannot get the door open....Th e Rethugs will have to send a Locksmith over to CC home to open the Closet Door...
A good job at WHAT? Have your insurance rates "Dropped like a rock"? How's that $240 working out for you? I hope you don't have kids you plan to send to college here.
As a state worker here, all I have left to hang on to is the clear concsience I have knowing I voted for the other guy.
As for lifting the ban on offshore drilling.. .. gas was not at $4 a gallon in 2006.
As a result, groceries were not as expensive in 2006.
In fact, the only thing that has NOT risen since 2006 is salaries.
2006 policies are not working in 2008.
Daisey, while you are defending Charlie, remember what the price of oil and gas was before the illegal invasion of Iraq??Tell us, come on!
Drilling offshore would not have ANY effect on the price of gas for at least a decade and likely would not make much difference then. He knows (like his presidential nominee buddy) that the drilling offshore stuff is just a gimmick.
First of all I am not here to support drilling in the coastal areas.
HOWEVER.
What you say is a complete LIE.
It would have an effect on gas prices RIGHT NOW. It's called speculation. You know the people that the politicians keep blaming for high gas prices.
They can't have it both ways. The slightest news about increases or decreases in oil supplies anywhere in the world changes the price at the pump. It's really very simple for anyone willing to think about it.
If the US (I'm not advocating it) were to announce full bore (no pun intended) drilling in ANWR and coastal areas it would change the price of gas right away long before a single drop of oil was even pumped.
It's simple, the speculators would realize that supply was going to be increasing. The futures contracts would be reflective of that change in supply. OPEC would recognize the coming increase in supply and would take steps to thwart it by reducing their prices and output. Their goal would be to do anything possible to lower prices so we would abandon the plans to produce more oil domestically.
The oil companies are not drilling in the leases they have now. This is just a ploy to get more leases tied up. Since the oil companies drill for the oil, sell it to themselves, refine it themselves and sell it to themselves to sell to us it is obvious it is a scam. As oil prices have gone up in the US from March to July gas prices went from $3.00 per gallon locally to $4.29 locally. We spent the same period in Europe. When we got there in early March gas was 1.17 pounds per liter at the Shell station on Oxstalls road in Deptford. Friday it was 1.18 pounds per liter. Yup that is about $9.00 per gallon but it hasn't gone up hardly any in the last 4 months.
A ploy by the oil companies to tie up oil leases. In actual fact if they were so short of oil they would be drilling in the 75% of leases they currently have but are not using. They would be building refineries. Not doing that either. All a game.
hey daisy -
got some news for you 2006 policies weren't working in 2006 either...
i remember when the price of eggs went up 70% simply from the announcement that ethanol was going to save us
until we have a real and visionary leader running this country many of us will continue to make short-sighted and selfish comments like yours.
what's the matter? couldn't afford the drive to daytona this year?
If Charlie is gay - someone will show up who he has been with and say so. If its one thing we've learned its that you cant hide behind that beard too long. I just cannot understand why he would
not have stood his ground and stayed unmarried. Because once he is married and then exposed
he will be humiliated and ridiculed. Dont these guys ever think that they will be exposed?
Whether Charlie is gay or not, whether this marriage will be legit or not, the fact remains that Crist is showing himself to be an even more incompetent, inept govenor than Jeb. Down here in Florida our budget is in shambles, we can't educate our kids, our property taxes are way too high, we can't afford to insure our homes & businesses and we can't attract any industry to state. Crist didn't create these problems, but he's not fixing them either. He's shown himself to be a typical Republican; runs a great campaign but can't govern worth a damn.
And yet he still has a 70% approval rating. Are you the only one in Florida watching this guy?
When was that poll taken? By whom? Who was polled?
70% sounds like it was a poll taken last July, among Republicans and by some sketchy biased polling outfit.
No, there are plenty of us. Of course we all voted against him in the first place.
The next big news will be that Lindsay Graham is about to marry. Nothing like having a lot of togetherness among the closest supporters of McSame. They could have a double wedding - which, of course, would give them a much wider stance with the media. Will Miss Gannon be on the guest list? Let's hope so. Looks like Gov. Charlie and his friend Lindsay may be trying to turn over a new page. What else can a GOPper do these days? Ask ex-Rep. Foley and Sen. Stance.
i am NOT republican, but i have to say Crist was a very good FL attorney general and his people were on top of things (not so with this doofus we have now) Crist he is a moderate (so he might be gay, LOL) Now, iIf he's selling himself cheap, then I'm done with him- if he;s gay, i have no problem with it, but of republicans do, so what do you expect. Charlie... go for the Dems!!!
Didn't Crist say, "I am not gay. I have never been gay."?
All the gay GOPers say that, I wouldn't put any more stock in it than the idea that Vitter is strengthening marriage.
Talk is quite cheap to the Rs. Of course the Christian wing of the party demands their dues.
You say he is "on top of things..." Like what pray-tell?
Who cares?
I know that Crist is opposed to letting gay people marry each other. Is Crist also opposed to letting gay people marry straight people? We should ask him.
Because to me...secre tly gay people who marry straight people as a cover is the "sin" and immoral. Gay people who are in love with and committed to other gay people and want to share that love in marriage is good for society! Period. Won't do harm to society, my marriage, or the so-called social order of things. Stop the cover ups republicans! Especially the hypocritical personal ones!
Where is the outcry from the bible beating moral Evangelican Preachers on this news.
If this was a Democrat, the MSN would be having a field day running this 24/7..
I don't like Crist as a governor (was okay as AG). His logic in legislating is beyond me.
If he (Crist) is gay, he sure does try to hide it. I thought we were beyond that in this era. He sure knows how to appeal to the anti-gay electorate.
He's as queer as a 9-dollar bill. That's OK but to act with the anti-gays is what's reprehensible.
Kind of like a Jew for Jesus
Wanna launch Straits For Gays?
Imagine how bland the world would be if not for 'homosexuals'. That said Conservatism is another issue...
