Florida's bachelor Governor Charlie Crist is getting married, and to a woman, too. That's how badly he wants to be vice president. I hope John McCain is happy now.
I hope Crist isn't making a mistake by trying too hard. Men don't want anything they can get too easy. On the other hand, men lose interest quickly.
Of course, the human heart is curved like a road through the mountains, so what do I know? Maybe it's love. And maybe it's just a joyous coincidence that Crist has found it at exactly the same time that McCain is looking for a running mate.
Sometimes things just work out.
It's like that federal ban on off shore drilling. When Crist ran for governor in 2006, he supported it. Now John McCain wants it repealed and (weird!) two weeks ago, Crist realized that he did too.
Florida is a swing state -- Haha! Get it? -- and Crist has a popularity rating of something like 70%. He also gets a lot of the credit for delivering the state to McCain in the primaries. There's only one nagging thing keeping him from being the obvious choice for the vice presidency: He comes off kinda gay.
But then, suddenly last Thursday, after thirty years of the single life, Crist discovered that he couldn't live without a woman named Carole Rome, a divorced mother of two. It sounds improbable to me, but then so did the Sex and the City movie. If those nice monsters can find love, why not?
Maybe it's not all politics of the most ghastly, obvious, self-hating, the fix-is-in, trick-the-rubes kind. Maybe I'm too cynical. Maybe love is real and coincidence is an illusion. Luck -- who said that? -- is believing that you're lucky.
Maybe what we're smelling is the powerful odor of synchronicity.

Here's the part that Tennessee Williams would have really liked: Gov. Crist's intended, Carole Rome, inherited - and runs -- one of America's oldest Halloween costume companies. The woman marrying the gayish governor from the sultry southern state actually makes beards.

Crist is gay!!! But, was respected before he sold his soul. Now to allow offshore drilling in Florida is an abomination. Won't help the greening of McCain. The environmental impact in the area should be a real concern, as well as crazy characters moving into the state to seek fortune.
WHY BE MARRIED WHEN YOU'RE IMPORTANT? HE CAN HAVE ANYONE HE WANTS! ESPECIALLY IN FLORIDA! WHERE DO YOU THINK THEY GET ALL THE GIRLS GONE WILD SHOTS?
ZOMG. She really makes beards!!
that beard connection is great.
Why are so many of the anti-gay marriage politicians, gay themselves? Too funny.
As a FL resident, I would like to make a few observations about Crist. His 70% approval rating, I am sure, was before he reversed his position on off-shore drilling and before he made it clear he will go so far as to betray himself for political gain. You can bet people respect a gay man much more than a deceiver. I thought you were a stand-up guy Charlie, but you are rolling over for McCain, it is transparent, and you have cheapened yourself.

Dorothy, please! Governor Charlie Crist of Florida announced his engagement to this beard (Gay slang for woman married to gay man.) As we've explained he's G-A-Y Mary, no doubt in our minds. And from the looks of things the allegations are forthcoming from many sources. If the governor is doing this to entice Presumptive Republican Presidential Senator McCain to choose him as his Vice President, it's worth the sacrifice one supposes. It is our belief that perhaps Charlie knows already that he won't be selected and was convinced by a McCain surrogate to make the announcement thus hoping to put the Obama Campaign on HIGH ALERT. Speculation of joining the ticket by the popular Florida governor would force Obama's campaignto channel resources into Florida - an expensive fight. The top four expensive advertising markets are California, New York, Illinois and Florida. This could be an excellent strategic move y the Republicans however we doubt that the Obama Campaign -- which currently is tied in polls in Florida -- would take a McCain-Crist ticket seriously. Please people with all the trouble Republicans have had with disclosures of man-man monkey sex among politicians it's pretty safe to say that Crist's engagement announcement is simply a "strategic ploy." We're not buying it and doubt anyone else is.

That someone is married, does not mean he or she is not gay.
SO true...any one who believes otherwise is astoundingly naive.
The woman marrying the gayish governor from the sultry southern state actually makes beards.
One could not have made this up in a novel...as Kelly so aptly points out, Tennessee Williams would have loved this irony...
MAYBE CHARLIE IS STRAIGHT. BUT I HEARD A RUMOR THAT MARK FOLEY WILL BE HIS BEST MAN.
HERB
No you are correct, all it means is that they have had a party to placate the religious right.
And the point of this article was?
Policitics is mired in deception.
If you need to have it explained to you...
Sounds like Charlie and his intended deserve each other.
Ahhhh, life works its little wonders in such unassuming ways sometimes, doesn't it?
Will Crist turn out like NJ's ex-gov, Jim McCreavy (or however you spell his name), or more like Elliot Spitzer -- or will he be another Larry Craig? It should be interesting to watch it unravel.
Seems like it's another tawdry closet case/wedding drama in the making, several years hence.
Charlie is a great governor and should let the McCain train wreck pass. Get married and play act that you are straight for the media. Then in 8 years run for President.
Great governor? What about the budget mess? We'll see how great everyone thinks he is after the effects of all the cuts that have to be made as a result of that stupid tax cut he kept pushing are all experienced.
In Bizarro world, maybe.
I just wonder if all those supporters of Chris who feel a man's private life is really no ones business except for the small group of people involved had the same attitude about Clinton. Or is this a recently developed cacophony because it is a Republican. How come we don't hear the same cacophony about Craig and Vitters?
I think it's sad that the guy's preferences are focused on at all. We are too interested in things that are probably none of our business and have nothing to do with qualifications.
The cogent question about Mr. Crist is, does he wear a flag lapet pin?
That made me laugh!
He's been wearing one lately. Surprise!
Gay, schmay, who cares. Fake marriage to get the big gig, though, that's different. Britain had a gay Prime Minister a dog's age ago (Edward Heath)... sure he didn't come out and say it but he didn't get a "wife" to make himself "respectable" and nobody gave a rat's arse. He was judged on what kind of job he was doing. Oh for the day when we can get that here... is he black, is he gay, is he a woman? Irrellevant. Can he do the job and is he telling the truth? That's what matters.
If candidates issues were all that were debated (a perfect world), we would have different candidates poised to run for office now, you can believe it.
Sad but true.
No, in the GOP what matters is that you are not gay, or at least that you can pretend you are not gay.It is obvious he isn't telling the truth, he changes his positions as quickly as McCain. The great flip flop master himself.. Looks like he is learning from McCain to change his position to get a job.
IN THE CLOSET?
YA THINK?
