Florida's bachelor Governor Charlie Crist is getting married, and to a woman, too. That's how badly he wants to be vice president. I hope John McCain is happy now.
I hope Crist isn't making a mistake by trying too hard. Men don't want anything they can get too easy. On the other hand, men lose interest quickly.
Of course, the human heart is curved like a road through the mountains, so what do I know? Maybe it's love. And maybe it's just a joyous coincidence that Crist has found it at exactly the same time that McCain is looking for a running mate.
Sometimes things just work out.
It's like that federal ban on off shore drilling. When Crist ran for governor in 2006, he supported it. Now John McCain wants it repealed and (weird!) two weeks ago, Crist realized that he did too.
Florida is a swing state -- Haha! Get it? -- and Crist has a popularity rating of something like 70%. He also gets a lot of the credit for delivering the state to McCain in the primaries. There's only one nagging thing keeping him from being the obvious choice for the vice presidency: He comes off kinda gay.
But then, suddenly last Thursday, after thirty years of the single life, Crist discovered that he couldn't live without a woman named Carole Rome, a divorced mother of two. It sounds improbable to me, but then so did the Sex and the City movie. If those nice monsters can find love, why not?
Maybe it's not all politics of the most ghastly, obvious, self-hating, the fix-is-in, trick-the-rubes kind. Maybe I'm too cynical. Maybe love is real and coincidence is an illusion. Luck -- who said that? -- is believing that you're lucky.
Maybe what we're smelling is the powerful odor of synchronicity.
--
Here's the part that Tennessee Williams would have really liked: Gov. Crist's intended, Carole Rome, inherited - and runs -- one of America's oldest Halloween costume companies. The woman marrying the gayish governor from the sultry southern state actually makes beards.

Charlie Crist: "I am not gay. I never have been gay."
Charlie Crist: "I am not gay. I have never been a bottom."
"Charlie Crist isn't gay, OK?' He could've fool me. Such impecable hair! Not to mention the make up. Congratulations on the fake, I mean, lovely marriage.
I cannot believe this - that all of this talk is actually occurring. Where is the common decency which would not people tojump to conclusiion that an unmarried man is gay. This is the most ridiculous kind of position in which to place onself. And if he were gay, he just might be latently gay with only a little exploratory experience; consult the research done by Kinsey, and others. Have we arrived at the point where it is assumed that if an unmarried male is unmarried after turfning 40 that he must be a pervert. In my Church and Sunday School we have a number of unmarried males, and women. They just have a lot of fun with each other socialy and perhaps otherwise, but are not interested in tying the knot. I do not think it's any of my business to find out how these people are having orgasms, if any. Besides, these people could very well be involved by themselves in self pleasuring, and there is the chance that Governor Crist has been a committed self-pleasurer. Does this make him a less credible candidate if he is a self-pleasurer?
First off, Kirby, being gay is NOT being a pervert. Get that one clear now.
Second, it's way more than his not being married. It's in who he is, how me moves, what he does. And, either way marrying in order to accomplish being named a VP running mate is an insult to the country. Regardless of what his sexuality is, or who he marries.
It is more than not being married. Ask the guys in Key West, he is known.
Much like Foley was known and despite being married Craig is known.
What is interesting how much he is willing to flip to get a job.
LOL!!
arlie Crist isnt fooling a soul!!!!
Right on the money.
Like Clay Aiken...Ch
That man is FLAMING !

American politicians of all stripes paint puritan veneers over inconvenient truths. I applaud any post that highlights this hypocrisy. But shouldn't you focus on the hidden truths that matter - like your dirty, thieving foreign policy - rather than on those which don't - like the sexual orientation of one human being?
If it's delicious irony that attracts: why are conservatives leading the charge to piss away trillions on a centrally-planned world order?
I wonder why ole Charlie lived with Mark Foley when they were in the Florida legislature together? I guess there must be hot pages working there.
Chris Kelly
That is one fun-eeee article. lol
Crist seems like a nice guy.
It would be a shame if he's playing the role of a political prostitute in order to attract the attention of McCain.
No one was born mating; so if Crist does not really want to get into the mating game, then he should align himself with others who are like him
On the other hand if he feels a pull towards the same gender, then marrying a woman can help to get his mind on the 'straight' track; because it does seem that the would be that far gone. He appreciates that he should be mating with a female; that is a good and thing.
Everybody in Florida knows the truth about Charlie...
Is there any politician in the Republican Party who isn' t a closet gay?
It is the epitomy of hypocrisy for the GOP to be consistently voting against gay rights, when so many of their leadership is gay. (Lindsy Graham, too).
What happens if any of them just admit it, will the Party ignore them, reject them?
Yeah- that tactic really worked out well for McGreevey. ....
doctorwang
Doesn't work for McGreevey doesn't mean it shouldn't have been done. Every little attempt at mental correction works.
It is better to have tried to 'straighten' out one's gender mixed up mind than never to have tried at all.
It is better to try to get cured than never to have tried at all.
Just giving up on trying to be mentally stable, and claiming that being gender confused is a healthy, normal and natural lifestyle is delusional.
Seen this before. Gay rumors start and all of a sudden the guy is married. Saw it happen with a popular Phoenix Sun basketball player years ago and a past Mayor of Phoenix (except I think he didn't go through with it; ended the engagement after losing the election). It worked. The gay rumors stopped cold each time. But doesn't work so well now. Didn't help Ricky Martin when he announced his engagement. Don't know if Crist is gay or not. Don't care. But now it's starting to work against the guy to marry too quickly after the gay rumors start.
OK,
------REAL LY---SO LEAVE CRIST ALONE!
So nothing is wrong with being gay
Nothing is wrong with being heterosexual
BUT..why on earth do people think that EVERY man who does not like to be around WOMEN is GAY?
HE JUST DON'T CARE!!!!! DON"T CARE!!!!
READ MY LIPS_ NOT EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD CARES ABOUT SEX- YEAH I SAID IT!!! LET ME SAY IT AGAIN.
THERE ARE PERFECTLY NORMAL NON-GAY, PEOPLE WHO DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT HAVE ANY INTEREST IN SEX - COPULATION, INTERCOURSE - EXCEPT SOCIAL -
AND THEY ARE NORMAL----
AND THEN ONE DAY THEY GET MARRIED TO BE VP, BUT NOT TO HIDE THEIR GAYNESS, AS THEY ARE JUST NEUTRAL ON THE MATTER OF SEX
Oh!!
"Neutral"?? I thought that was an another option.
I think most people who study human behavior would disagree. The impule to have sex is universal. Some people just have some sort of psychological blockage.
He's Gay. That was my first thought after reading he divorced after 6 mos. of marriage 30 years ago. Not there isn't anything wrong with being gay, but I'm a native floridian, and I can tell you that he couldn't come out as a gay governor. Don't let the pretty beaches and hotels fool you. It still is the good ol' boy state.
What I don't get is the 70% approval, all the folks I know, don't like him and didn't vote for him. Now that you've questioned his sexuality, he may not fare well in Florida or with McCain.
Thanks for the insight Gloriar8. Poor Charlie. Yes, he seems nice.
"
Plenty of beaches in FL for the good 'ol boys. Handy to bury their heads in the sand and just pretend they don't discriminate badly against gays. Hope Carole enjoys her "marriage.
Gay or not, he's done a lot for Florida so far. I voted against him because he's a hypocrite about his sexuality. He should stick with being Governor of Florida; if he runs for VP the truth will come out, in one form or another.
He's marrying his retirement plan.
Ala McSame?
I couldn't care less who he goes at it with. That's his own business and if he wants to do it with a gerbil or even a Cuisinart, unless he tells everybody about it, it's nobody's business.
People should bugger off and leave the guy alone.
"Bugger off" might not be the best choice of words in this situation.
I hope McCain DOES pick Crist--what a photo op for Dems that'd be. Do you think Bush will pose on Crist's side or McCain's?
Surelythere is a non-Rupert Murdoch-owned ragthat could find wild party pix of Charlie and a few pals...
As for the Hudson marriage, that was a studio-orchestrated maneuver to allay rumors, as Rock was a omnipresent attendee of the Hollywood gay party scene. It also was done for gay men who wanted children but were denied adoptions by agencies. IT'S SO RIDICULOUS, all the charading that has gone on for centuries, which the conservatives cling to as necessary in order to propagate their mythical world in which God created all of us hetero, and that, like the granny in Wedding Crashers,
("Todd's a homo"), gays exist just to irritate and fly in the face of respectability, religioosity, and pure Amurikanism.
Our family is blessed to be close friends with a married gay couple who c-parent a daughetr one of them had biologically with a woman who likewise wanted children, and who shunned marriage just for the sake of pleasing others. They are better parents than most I know, perhaps at times, myself included. Sorry to wax serious on a really hysterical thread,
Being a straight woman, I have nothing against the gay community. I believe in ''live and let live''. However I think it's really hypocritical of Crist to hide his sexual preference behind marrying a woman
just to look like a family man. It probably won't happen because when McBush's cohorts see these posts, he won't pick Crist. The ''engagement'' will then suddenly be off.
If Crist is selected to be McBush's VP, it won't matter a hill of beans whether he is married or not married.
The Republicans are going to lose the Presidential bid by a landslide.
LOL
That's the first time (I swear on everything I hold true) that I've ever used LOL. The visual was particularly appreciated. Too f'ing funny.
Your article struck the perfect chord with the best, most satisfying finish (always the hardest thing to achieve in comedy) I've ever read.
Definitely to be filed under "truth is stranger than fiction."
Thank you for giving me my first LOL experience.
