Mitticisms: "Martin Luther King" [Updated]

Earlier this month, in a speech defending the racist, uhm, quirks of his proud but secret religion, Mitt Romney declared:

"I saw my father march with Martin Luther King."

So, well, that's that. Except, according to a report in the Boston Phoenix, it turns out that depends on what your definition of "saw" is. And "march." And "with." And "Martin Luther King."

Because it never happened.

"A spokesperson for Mitt Romney now tells the Phoenix that George W. Romney and Martin Luther King Jr. marched together in June, 1963 -- although possibly not on the same day or in the same city."

... Romney spokesperson Eric Fehrnstrom suggests that these two were part of the same "series" of events, co-sponsored by King and the NAACP, and is thus consistent with Romney's claim that 'I saw my father march with Martin Luther King.'"

Mitt, Fehrnstrom explains, was speaking "figuratively."

Although they never marched together, they did march separately. In that they were both in Michigan and ambulatory at the same time. And, by "the same time," I mean "different times."

Except, if you read the Phoenix story, George Romney didn't actually "march" anywhere. But he was present at an event. Where King was not.

And Mitt never "saw" it, because he was doing missionary work in France.

WHAT MITT MEANT:

We can all agree that George Romney and Martin Luther King were both alive in June, 1963.

--

UPDATE:

The Romney campaign is still looking for an event where George Romney might have marched with Martin Luther King. Romney seems to have been at King's funeral, but that doesn't count, since Baptists don't believe the dead walk and we don't know what Mormons believe. Mitt would tell you, but then he'd have to kill you, and rebaptize you against your will.

Another helpful lead from Team Mitt? The event where Mitt Romney might have seen his father marching with Dr. King and/or kissing Santa Claus occurred somewhere between 1963 and 1968.

So Mitt might not have been ministering to the French; he might have been in high school, to see it, if it happened or not, which is anybody's guess.

And a clarification from the candidate himself:

"When we say, 'I saw the Patriots win the World Series, it doesn't necessarily mean you were there -- excuse me, the Super Bowl. I saw my dad become president of American Motors. Did that mean you were there for the ceremony? No, it's a figure of speech."

It's basic etymology. When a man says: "I saw," you should know it's just an expression. For "I didn't see."

Except the American Motors comparison doesn't really work. Presumably there are pay stubs from that. Because presumably it really happened. A more precise analogy would be: "I saw my dad invent the internal combustion engine."

With Medgar Evers.

Your family might believe it. But it doesn't make it even figuratively true.

The Mormons discriminated against blacks until 1978, about the time they were about to lose their tax-exempt status. Suddenly, the head of the church had a tete-a-tete with God and God told him it was okay to end the bigotry.

It's more likely that Romney's father marched in tune with Lester Maddox.

Reaper06, no, flip-flopping is more of a MITT thing than a KERRY thing. When it comes to flip-flopping, Mitt makes Kerry look like a rank amateur!

And I don't know what the heck it is YOUR smoking, LiberalMathProfessor, but being wealthy never stopped the Kennedys from looking out for the little guy. I think they just may be the exceptions, though.

I am NO Mitt Romney supporter. Whether his father march with Martin Luther King or not, this is just yet another example of Mitt saying anything to try and deflect attention from the Mormon issue.

Now this has to be the Mitticism of the Year:

Willard Mitt Romney cured his breeder wife of MS by saying the following: 'I don't care if you aren't able to do the things you used to do, those things don't matter. We can get through anything together. As long as you're just still here, everything will be okay.'

And POOF, she was cured. Completely cured. What great news for all of the MS suffers around the world!!! You just have to get a Hubby like Willard to say the Mitticism above and POOF, no more disease! Praise God! Someone should tell Annette from the Mickey Mouse Club that she had a crappy husband that didn't say the magic words and thats why she suffered.

Take it away Chris...you are the best.

Give the man a break. I am an aid dem. and Hillar supporter, and I beelive Romney is a phony, but the fact that hid dat supported Dr. King and his philosophies is admirable and probably did have some positive impact on Mitt.

Must bloggers be cruel and cynical about every thing.

I don't get it.

Detroit Free Press: “With Gov. Romney a surprise arrival and marching in the front row, more than 500 Negroes and whites staged a peaceful antidiscrimination parade up Grosse Pointe’s Kercheval Avenue Saturday. … ‘the elimination of human inequalities and injustices is our urgent and critical domestic problem,’ the governor said. … [Detroit NAACP President Edward M.] Turner told reporters, ‘I think it is very significant that Governor Romney is here. We are very surprised.’ Romney said, ‘If they want me to lead the parade, I’ll be glad to.’” (”Romney Joins Protest March Of 500 In Grosse Pointe,” Detroit Free Press, 6/29/63)
· In Their 1967 Book, Stephen Hess And David Broder Wrote That George Romney “Marched With Martin Luther King Through The Exclusive Grosse Point Suburb Of Detroit.” “He has marched with Martin Luther King through the exclusive Grosse Pointe suburb of Detroit and he is on record in support of full-coverage Federal open-housing legislation.” (Stephen Hess And David Broder, The Republican Establishment: The Present And Future Of The G.O.P., 1967, p. 107)

In 1967, George Romney Was Praised At A National Civil Rights Rally For His Leadership. “Michigan Gov. George Romney walked into a Negro Civil Rights rally in the heart of Atlanta to the chants of ‘We Want Romney’ and to hear protests from Negroes about city schools. ‘They had invited me to come and I was interested in hearing things that would give me an insight into Atlanta,’ the Michigan Republican said. Led by Hosea Williams, a top aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the all-Negro rally broke into shouts and song when Romney arrived. ‘We’re tired of Lyndon Baines Johnson,’ Williams said from a pulpit in the Flipper Temple AME Church as Romney sat in a front row pew. ‘Johnson is sending black boys to Vietnam to die for a freedom that never existed,’ Williams said. Pointing to Romney, Williams brought the crowd of 200 to its feet when he said, ‘He may be the fella with a little backbone.’ Williams said Romney could be ‘the next President if he acts right.’ The potential GOP presidential nominee left the rally before it ended.” (”Romney Praised At Civil Rights Rally In Atlanta,” The Chicago Defender, 9/30/67)

FACT: In The Summer Of 1963, Governor Romney Participated In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Freedom Marches” In Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

In 1963, George Romney Gave The Keynote Address At The Conference That Sparked The Martin Luther King “Freedom Marches” In Detroit. “The establishment of these human relations groups came in the wake of several major events (besides the embarrassing racist practices of such suburbs as Dearborn), which took place in 1963 and helped galvanize interracial support and cooperation for integrated housing. The first event was the Metropolitan Conference on Open Occupancy held in Detroit in January 1963. The second event was the Martin Luther King ‘Freedom’ March in June of the same year, the spinoffs of which were several Detroit NAACP-sponsored interracial marches into Detroit suburbs to dramatize the need for black housing. … Governor George Romney gave the keynote speech at this conference, in which he pledged to use the power of the state to achieve housing equality in Michigan.” (Joe T. Darden, Detroit, Race And Uneven Development, 1987, p. 132)

Governor Romney Marched In July 1963 In An NAACP-Sponsored March Through Grosse Pointe. “The next couple of NAACP marches into the suburbs were more pleasant. Both Grosse Pointe and Royal Oak Township welcomed the interracial marchers. Close to 500 black and white marchers, including many Grosse Pointers, marched in ‘the Pointes’ that July. Governor George Romney made a surprise appearance in his shirt sleeves and joined the parade leaders.” (Joe T. Darden, Detroit, Race And Uneven Development, 1987, p. 132)

Oh, great....if he gets elected the next thing he will think he sees or has seen or whatever will be WMDs in some middle eastern country and before you know it, we'll be right back in a war. Of course, that is assuming that we are out of Iraq by that time which is just as unlikely to happen. Where do we get these candidates from that think they see or have seen things that actually never happened? For once, just tell us the truth....ok?

Mr. Kelly,

You are as subtle as a Sherman tank. Maybe you have noticed that to assume makes an "ass" out of you and "me." Labelling a person as a racist because of a statement regarding his father and Martin Luther King marching together to prove the reverse, might lead your readers to believe another George Soros lackey has struck again! I believe that I could make an argument that George Soros has spent millions buying the bulk of the media to keep the hate Republican, hate Bush, hate Cheney, hate Administration, hate war and generally to hate anything American campaign in full swing, constantly. As a registered Democrat for fifty-three years and still going strong, I wish our Party would purge itself of all hate mongers and return to what we do best, govern in the interst of our nation. Note, I am an agnostic, belong to no organized religion, have worked for sixty-five years straight and hate no one.

SO MITT ROMNEY HAD A DREAM TOO! Well, having grown up in Detroit, I have a vivid memory of the historical event in question that will definitely shed some light on his vision of his father marching alongside Dr. King. In a nutshell, Governor George W. Romney wasn’t there. But I was. I was a college freshman on Sunday, June 23, 1963, when Martin Luther King Jr. lead 125,000 people on what he called at the time, “The Great March on Detroit”. My entire family and I were among the marchers. This mass demonstration was actually the dress rehearsal for the subsequent “March on Washington” which was still in the planning stages, and Dr. King tried out his signature “I have a dream…” speech in varying octaves and in stentorian tones until he got it just right. AN ADDED NOTE OF INTEREST: My cousin, Bernard Lee, was Dr. King’s road manager and personal assistant.

"Figuratively"

The copout for everything untrue, including religion.

I don't trust Romney but this entire matter is inflated "gotcha journalism". Answer truthfully--have you ever used the word "saw or seen" in describing something ? I mean, I've seen the world change. Oops. Do you think I mean I literally watched the world change from up in the sky ? LOL
