Head of Catholic Bishops Conference Backs Culture Warrior Bill Donohue

Posted: 12/23/10 12:51 PM ET

The newly elected president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has expressed his enthusiastic support for the Catholic League, which under the leadership of William Donohue has become one of the most divisive and polarizing organizations in the U.S. Catholic community. The move is seen by many as a deepening of the Catholic Church's affiliation with political forces on the far right.

The favorable comments appeared last week in an opinion piece entitled "Why We Need the Catholic League," posted on the Archdiocese of New York's official blog. In the piece, USCCB president Archbishop Timothy Dolan explains that despite the fact that "some may take occasional issue with [Donohue's] style," Dolan is "glad to express ... encouragement for the work he does." "Keep at it, Bill!" the archbishop writes. "We need you!"

Donohue recently captured headlines by bullying the Smithsonian into censoring a four-minute video piece by the artist David Wojnarowicz because it depicted a crucifix lying on the ground covered with ants. There's no indication in the piece of whether the imagery is intended as an insult to Catholicism. Nevertheless, Donohue declared it "hate speech" and House Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner soon followed suit.

Anyone who has followed Donohue's career knows that this sort of behavior is par for the course. Donohue makes a tidy living -- $400,000 a year, in fact -- manufacturing controversies in order to make the Catholic Church look like a persecuted minority. He's the guy who brought you the flare-up over President Obama's speech at Notre Dame last year. He's the guy who took out John Kerry's religious outreach director in 2004 because she once spoke at an AIDS rally on behalf of an anti-poverty group, then defended Bush's Catholic coordinator when allegations surfaced that he had date raped one of his students at Fordham (Donohue blamed the victim).

More recently, Donohue tried to bait state governors into a Christmas culture war by sending all 50 of them cheap tabletop nativity scenes, then threatening a media campaign against those who refused to display the pieces in their state capitol buildings.

Up until now, it's been easy to dismiss Donohue and the Catholic League as a faith-based fringe movement. The bishops' sin -- if any -- was one of omission: a failure to put adequate distance between their ministry and Donohue's antics. But Dolan's recent comments are cause for much deeper concern. They suggest that the Catholic League has now been welcomed as an official ministry of the church.

Sadly, there's little reason for surprise. After all, these are the same bishops who came out against the health care reform act at the request of their Family Research Council-affiliated lobbyists, then stood by silently as Republican super-PACs executed a political hit job on pro-life Democrats who supported the legislation. These are the same bishops who, in January 2009, used their pulpits to wage war against a non-existent abortion bill, even as job losses approached 600,000 a month. These are the same bishops who voted down a moderate candidate for president last month -- one known for resisting the church's foray into partisan politics -- and instead voted in Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

Catholics who still believe in the church's social justice mission aren't taking this lying down. Catholics United -- the organization I direct -- recently launched an e-mail campaign asking Archbishop Dolan to retract his support for the Catholic League. As of this writing, nearly 4,500 of our members have sent messages to the archbishop. If we can make Dolan and the USCCB understand the full extent of Donohue's inappropriate behavior, and the embarrassment he causes many Catholics to feel, perhaps they will refrain from supporting him in the future.

PFAW's Right Wing Watch blog has a great run-down on the man the bishops' conference is supporting here.

Does anyone really find it unusual that Dolan would support such inflammatory opinions? And opinions is what Donohue prints. Dolan's sights are to move up the ranks, so he will do anything to make sure that someone who supports the hierarchical church is heard. We have gone back to the Dark Ages, when the Catholic church were the ones making all proclamations about dogma, and proclaiming that only Catholics - and the very strictest, letter-of-the-law ones - would go to heaven. If that is who occupies heaven, well, it doesn't sound so enticing to me!!

400,000 dollars a year to bully and trash survivors of clergy abuse,???

I feel if I should save kittens from shelters that I should save babies that can breathe out of the womb--as well---I had never made the connection before---but how can one save animals YET not thier fellow species....

saving a kitten is not even compareable to a lifetime commitment of raising a child one may not be able to afford.

by 18 years that kid will cost more than $100,000 dollars (im sure a more updated statistic can be found)

What, we ask ourselves, has the Catholic Church ever done to be ashamed of? There is always room for another authoritarian figure claiming to be persecuted to help rally the faithful.

Bill Donaghue of the Catholic League is a lay person and a conservative Catholic. He has the right to express his views on Catholicism and take action against bigotry against the Church as guaranteed under the US Constitution. Why he is disliked is that he provides counterpoints to the critics of the Catholic Church. There are many Catholics like myself who support his work and the Catholic League's membership has been growing. This recommendation by Archbishop Timothy Dolan is much welcomed and will further raise the organization's profile. Best wishes to Bill and the Catholic League in 2011.

No, that's not 'why he's disliked.' He's disliked for his *own words and actions.* Which involve hate-mongering, deceit, and misrepresenting Catholic voters in democratic government to pursue right-wing agendas.

He says horrible and untrue things about minorities and claims people are 'persecuting' Catholics when his distortions and untruths are called out.
05:18 PM on 12/25/2010
There is no proof that that what he says is untrue. There are laws against defamation and if you or anyone are sure that he is in the wrong you are free to take him to court.

and what was his response over the Molestation Charges by Priests.....First Denial, Second BLAME the Accusers, THird..minimize the scope...forth....Accuse people of "pursecuting the Church", fifth BLame Homosexuals , SIxth..We're doing the right thing and have resolved it...

Then we learn its WORLD WIDE situation, involving Hundreds of Priests, some are now Cardinals....one of whom was Promoted to the vatican for his bahavior...of allowing Priests to molest...His Name was Bernard Law from Boston...the guy should doing life..

Since the 1960s there has been some serious infiltration of undesirables hiding in the Catholic Church. The Church is well aware of the problem and is attending to it. It may take time but the rogue clergy will eventually be removed. As for the former Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Bernard Law, I would definitely say that his indecisive actions regarding the rogue priests in his jurisdiction was wrong. Any accusation against a clergy member should be reported to the local police and be investigated by them as they can make an independent assessment about the merits of the case. It is now is the policy of the Catholic Church to do the latter.

In recent years the catholic church has been losing members at, to them, an alarming rate. Embracing people like Donohue is only goint to speed up that rate.
04:36 PM on 12/25/2010
All established Christian denominations in the West have been losing members over the last 50 years owing to the rise of secularism. The Catholic Church actually lagged the other Christian churches. Religions that are growing in the West are mostly Mormons and Muslims, some evangelical churches, and others having some lose affiliations with the different flavors of Buddhism.

I know this is often found to be hard to swallow by liberal Catholics, but I hope we can get over a simple hurdle here. Whether or not you agree with the Catholic Leagues antics, they DO speak for a lot of Catholics.

There are several deep divides in the Catholic community, and in some ways that is good. Adds a lot of diversity to issues, and diversity is better than lock step dogma. However. That diversity also means your voice is much smaller. Accept both things or get out. That is the only options, unfortunately.

Yeah, like that's a shocker. The Catholic League's been strutting around claiming to speak for the Church and Catholic people they disagree with, and the control-freaks what, didn't say anything all along cause they didn't *notice?*

Really, now.

I was lucky the Catholic Church I grew up in didn’t have abusive priests and it was one of love and human service to help those less fortunate. Now it seems it is a church self-pity, self-righteousness, and selfishness. I really miss my old church parrish.

What world was that on?
The worst abuse I suffered was that my father's abuse was not only enabled, but condoned and I was blamed for being "bad" because I disapproved!

Ughhh...it's really a shame b/c it would be so easy for the bishops to at least ignore someone as counter to what the Catholic Church stands for. As much as I kind of wish I didn't know all this about Donahue, we're lucky to have y'all pointing it out. The idea that the Church should have to settle for mouth pieces who so badly twist the gospel is defeatist. The Church is made up of fallen and sinful people, but it must hold its leaders to a higher standard. There can be a place for those who focus primarily on conservative values and fight the culture wars, but if the Church is going to lift those up, it must also lift up those fighting for the priorities Christ tended to focus a little more on and which the Catholic Church has such a strong tradition so that they can act as a counter-balance. A failure to do so risks corrupting the witness and calling of the Church.

Thanks Eric. Donohue has every right to say and do what he does, but it's not OK for the bishops to give their imprimatur to his antics. Let's hope this is the last time this happens.

Actually, where he claims to speak for all the people called Catholic, or to deniably-represent the Church, he has no 'right.' He just does.

Hmm..so do we need the Catholic League? Chris while I commend your mission I think you might be missing the point here. The Catholic League's intent here is to be a watchdog and seems to be based on the assumption that if you "give them an inch, they'll take a mile". Hence the nails on the chalkboard . Dolan's acceptance is likely due to the need for such a voice, which conceivabl y could be coming from the council themselves . We'll have to see if that happens but give him a chance, he just got the job! As for Donohue, would I (and other Catholics) prefer someone else in his role? Maybe. But given the lack of voices out there his, as is yours, is welcome nonetheles s.

Description of Slippery Slope Falicy

The Slippery Slope is a fallacy in which a person asserts that some event must inevitably follow from another without any argument for the inevitability of the event in question. In most cases, there are a series of steps or gradations between one event and the one in question and no reason is given as to why the intervening steps or gradations will simply be bypassed. This "argument" has the following form:

1. Event X has occurred (or will or might occur).
2. Therefore event Y will inevitably happen.
