Here at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), we get countless complaints about religiously-based mental health and counseling programs, which, over the past few years, have been systematically replacing proven psychological and medical approaches to a multitude of issues faced by military personnel. I've seen so many truly insane, not to mention blatantly unconstitutional, ways that the military is playing with the mental well being of our troops since I began working for MRFF that I really didn't think it was possible for me to be surprised by anything anymore. Then I was sent a PowerPoint presentation by an airman at RAF Lakenheath, the largest U.S. Air Force base in England. On the MRFF scale of classifying by various expletives the egregiousness level of things that are reported to us -- "holy crap," "holy shit," and "holy f..." -- this one, promoting creationism as a means of preventing suicide among our military personnel, was definitely a "holy f..."

In March 2008, this presentation, titled "A New Approach To Suicide Prevention: Developing Purpose-Driven Airmen," was shown at a commander's call that was mandatory for an estimated 1,000 of Lakenheath's Air Force personnel, and sent out by email to the entire base of over 5,000 the following day. As the use of the phrase "Purpose-Driven" in its title implies, also incorporated into this presentation is the wisdom of presidential candidate inquisitor Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life, a book that, second only to the Bible itself, is the most heavily promoted religious book in the military.

Following a slide stating, "Dr. Rick Warren's book, The Purpose Driven Life, provides a powerful model for Suicide Prevention, developing leaders, and making troops combat ready and effective," the author of the presentation, Air Force chaplain Capt. Christian Biscotti, brings up Charles Darwin for the first time in defining what he calls "3 Levels of Purpose."

On one of the next slides, Capt. Biscotti states that if we don't know where we came from we are lost, and that knowing where we come from is the origin of hope. This is followed by a slide comparing "Chance" and "Design," a.k.a. evolution and creationism.

And, why not work a little religious nationalism into this "suicide prevention" presentation? (I'm still trying to figure out how Capt. Biscotti came up with the notion that Charles Darwin was a leader of the former Soviet Union.)

Another segment of Capt. Biscotti's presentation, titled "FAITH is Foremost," contains three stories -- his own personal story, the story of the woman who made the news a few years back by talking her way out of a hostage situation by reading to her captor from The Purpose Driven Life, and, incredibly inappropriately for a presentation promoting religion, the story of Pat Tillman. I'm sure everyone remembers Lt. Col. Ralph Kauzlarich's outrageous remarks that Tillman's parents' dissatisfaction with the investigation of their son's death was caused by their religious beliefs, or lack thereof, saying in an ESPN.com interview, "When you die, I mean, there is supposedly a better life, right? Well, if you are an atheist and you don't believe in anything, if you die, what is there to go to? Nothing. You are worm dirt. So for their son to die for nothing, and now he is no more -- that is pretty hard to get your head around that. So I don't know how an atheist thinks. I can only imagine that that would be pretty tough." I'm fairly certain that the Tillmans would not be very happy to find out that their son is now being used as an example in a presentation promoting religion to the military.

The presentation ends by asking the viewer to receive their first tool, which is to "Impart Faith."

According to MRFF founder and president Mikey Weinstein, "The shocking discovery of this hideously unconstitutional, mandatory, military PowerPoint presentation, which is essentially coterminous with Rick Warren's sectarian Purpose Driven Life, takes the quintessential cake as far as magnitude of odiousness of illegality is concerned. Indeed, it is arguably not only the most prominent example in MRFF's current Federal lawsuit against the DoD of the 'pervasive and pernicious pattern and practice' of unconstitutional rape of the religious freedoms of our honorable armed forces members, but an example of the reckless substitution of religious ideology for the real professional help that could save the life of a member of our armed forces considering suicide. Bertrand Russell once sagaciously opined that very few people can be happy without hating another person, nation or creed. This 'Purpose-Driven Airmen' mandatory presentation is the epitome of military-sanctioned 'hatred of the other' and those commanding its viewing must face trial by General Courts Martial."

The entire "Purpose-Driven Airmen" PowerPoint presentation can be viewed here.

As a veteran of the US Air Force, I am outraged at this and that it was mandatory is even worse. They sure have come a long way since the commanders calls I attended. It is quite clear that the commanding general and his chaplain should be court-martialed NOW! There is NO excuse for this, and it has so many outright LIES in it, that alone should make it ripe for disciplinary action.

The quick and easy fix is to demand that Gates remove both officers from their positions immediately. With Obama coming into office, that should be an easy task since I hope that he will not condone such crap. We have to make a big enough noise about this to get it done. I hope that all will write to Gates and your congressmen to demand action on this. The Jews, Unitarians, Moslems, Bhuddists, and others should make this a priority. ADL should really be able to make a big stink about it. I hope that they will.

One question that such idiots cannot answer is how did the atheist Red Army defeat the overwhelmingly Christian Wehrmacht in WWII if a belief in God grants military power? Or how did the Viet Cong WIN against the US armed forces?

This is so outrageous it's hard to believe it actually happened. For the record not all members of the US military are Christians. I served 8 years and I'm an atheist (yes there actually are atheists in foxholes despite what some religious bigots like to think).

The other REALLY big deal is that a service member who actually is suicidal might not get the help they need. They might be afraid to ask for help because they think they're going to get religion shoved down their throat, or, if they do ask for help, they may get sent to a chaplain who is so sure that all they need is spiritual guidance that they don't get referred to a doctor or psychologist who's qualified to assess their condition.

who ever promoted this crap needs to be fired, and this program must be replaced by something that is REASON DRIVEN.

do they sacrifice animals and do little dances to have their god weaken the enemy?

This should surprise me, but it doesn't. I expect stuff like this from the military now.

If we knew of a Parent who gave His children certain Rules to follow, and when those children disobeyed Him, He either killed them, or burned and tortured them, for as long as possible.... Well..... Would NOT WE declare HIM insane and lock Him away from harming others???

Yet somehow, I am supposed to accept a Biblical God who does this to HIS Children??? What a sick Model for Parenting and Authority... Makes it easy to grasp why Organized Religion is based in so called Holy Books, that one is not supposed to question... Fear keeps the Sheeple herded into a complying Flock...

I grew up being taught to Believe that the Biblical description of GOD was Factual... I did experience near suicide... I stood at the waters edge... What saved me was a leap of Faith into Believing in the Inherent Godliness of the Nature I AM...

I made a conscious choice between my inner Spirituality and my Religiously taught Beliefs... I leaped away from a Belief my Religious Beliefs were right and trusted Spirit Self ME over Religious Beliefs... Scary to do... Whew! Yet NO regrets...

Taken all in all, this is an obscenity. A pocketbook driven motive is all I ever experience from these Christian preachers.

Taken in complete context, this is a true obscenity. It is so vile on so many levels. A pocketbook driven reality for almost every Christian preacher I've ever had the displeasure of knowing.

Under the uniform military code of justice you loose some of your constitutional rights, looks like the first ammendment is one of those. It is despicable and un-American to force religion down anyone's throat. Those in service to our country deserve better.
It is also very strange that German citizen Karl Marx is listed as one of the leaders of the Soviet Union. Karl Marx died in 1883. The Russian revolution started in 1917.
The military is a strange provider of both history and religion.
I sincerely hope that under President Obama we will gt our military out of the business of pushing religious ideology onto our brave men and women who have given (and continue to give) so much for our country.
Freedom of religion includes freedom from religion.

Leave it to the U.S. Air Force, the one branch of the military that has the distinction of killing more American soldiers and more innocent civilians in battle than any other. When God is your co-pilot, all is forgiven. I love the smell of napalm in the morning; it smells like victory.

Has anyone considered using mockery to counteract stuff like this? Carl Hiaasen discovered that people can handle being denounced but not being made fun of.

Just Like I've Said:

To conservatives:

Anything that helps society is socialist

Anything that helps Community is Communist.

"Love Of Man" Jesus, Budda, Gandhi.

But they identify the Gospel Jesus with Darwin Marx Lenin and Stalin.

Conservatives equate all the Gospel values with pinko Mas Murderers.

Conservatives: Bold Lies, Projection and distraction.

Thank you for the article and the slide presentation. I don't think anything is amiss here. People do need to find something bigger than themselves to have purpose and to feel accepted. There are other materials that help one find purpose that work spirituality without religion into the mix, instead of God. Slide presentations are only a guideline, so we may assume that more is read into the program depending on the presenter's frame of reference. While I agree there are a few slides that should be lost from this presentation. Maybe a compilation of world spiritual leaders should be the context for this presentation. There are many good books and authors who bring this subject forefront so eloquently without context to religion.

I lost a very close family member last year. Not due to suicide; however, we struggled for many years with borderline depression. In our search, we found that seeing yourself in context of a larger picture, staying busy by giving service and knowing that your service helps others was the gift in moving forward in life. I personally like Ekhart Tolle's take on understanding self and finding purpose. Books on Buddhism, which is not a religion, are also helpful. This particular death brought me to realize there is something more...not in religious context, but in energy and spiritual relationship requiring our attention. However we don't know until something bigger than ourselves opens that door for us.

Buddhism is a religon. It's just not deity based. It's just about the quest for spirtual enlightenment without the need to add bizzare rules to govern your life (like don't eat meat on Fridays).

It's already included as an example in MRFF's current federal lawsuit in a list of items showing the "pattern and practice" of these kinds of things in the military.
