"I Just Think I'm Gonna Barf."

"Oh, I just think I'm gonna barf...."
-- Marge Gunderson (Francis McDormand), from Fargo

I open today with that Fargo quote for many reasons. The first of which, it's funny. As a matter of fact, it's so funny I think I'll make it the title of this piece, as well. The second of which, I think Fargo DVDs are going to be selling like hotcakes after Sarah Palin's speech tonight. Because, thirdly, this would be the perfect quote for Palin to use. Sarah Palin (I really hope Republican speechwriters aren't reading this) has a very similar accent to Margie in Fargo, and references are inevitably going to be made... so she could get out in front of it, and indeed turn such references to her advantage.

Of course, if Sarah Palin did use this quote, it would be to illustrate her feelings towards the media. And there isn't a doubt in my mind that the Republican crowd would eat it up like Minnesota pasties.

But the main reason I'd like to remind everyone of this quote is because of why Margie had a rising gorge in the first place -- she was pregnant. It was morning sickness. And -- most importantly -- she was still doing her job. That's an image that Republicans seem to be trying to reinforce, as evidenced by the fact that Bristol Palin's fiancé is going to be present tonight. And it's a tough image to counteract. Put into thematic words: "Pregnancy is just a part of life, real women tough their way through it." Which, as I said, is going to be part of the Palin story one way or another anyway.

However, I believe the McCain campaign is walking a fine line. Not with such imagery, but with the way they've been treating the media. And I'm not talking about gratuitous media-bashing at the Republican convention (which is so traditional an exercise I'm actually surprised they don't devote an entire night to it). What I'm talking about is access.

Access is the coin of the realm in media types who cover campaigns. "Journalists" are careful not to write stories too nastily, because they fear losing access to the candidate as a result. And access is their bread and butter.

But McCain, ever since his campaign was taken over by the Karl Rove gnomes, has been shutting the media out with more and more ferocity. First, they kicked the media off the bus. No more hours-long chatty sessions with McCain on the "Straight Talk Express." Then, they limited McCain interviews. Now, they are keeping Sarah Palin under lock and key, so she gets a chance to learn some world geography before she has to answer questions.

Unfortunately, nature abhors a vacuum -- and while there's nothing at all "natural" about the campaign press corps, they also abhor an information vacuum. Which they've been filling since the Palin announcement with glee.

Now, in one of those Machiavellian moves you would expect from Karl Rove neophytes, the McCain campaign is now playing the "victim" card, and saying the press is just being mean to Sarah. But they still are keeping her away from the cameras, at least until after her speech.

Well, when you are a journalist and you've got no access to lose, then there is nothing to stop you from reporting whatever you wish. And since these "journalists" are actually pack animals (think wolves or sharks), when everyone is in a feeding frenzy, then the campaign is backed into a corner because they can't cut off all access to everyone.

This is where we may see the rare double-reverse-twist Machiavellian move from the media. Today's talking point from the McCain campaign is "you're being unfair, why don't you talk about Palin's record and the issues?" This could backfire on them, as it may prod the media into moving beyond the pregnant-daughter salaciousness, and actually do their jobs and inspect Sarah Palin's record for the rest of America to see. "OK -- you want to talk record and issues, let's talk record and issues...."

As I've written already this week (in an article that is already out-of-date), there is a lot of gold to mine in Palin's Alaskan experience. Solid issues and decisions that Sarah Palin has or has made which are far outside what the mainstream would find acceptible.

This already started last night. So far, the media has picked up on the "Bridge To Nowhere" story being a complete fabrication (Palin was for it before she was against it, and SHE TOOK THE MONEY ANYWAY!), and on the fact that Palin actually loved earmarks (when she was the one cashing the checks instead of worrying about who was writing them). To be fair to her, this is par for the course in Alaskan politics -- but doesn't really fit the "reformer/maverick" box the McCain people are trying to fit her in. The Troopergate story is just waiting to explode as well. Anyway, I've already listed the things which I consider valid issues for the media to explore. I'm just happy they're picking up on a few of them already.

But McCain's campaign has thrown the gauntlet down to the media, challenging them to report on "her record and the issues," so let's see if they pick it up and run with it or not. Of course, Palin could give such a warmly-received speech tonight that the mainstream media swoons over her, and starts reporting nothing but glowing Palin stories. It has happened before, and it is a real danger -- if Palin charms the media so much that they back off her, then the road to the election is going to be a lot harder for Barack Obama.

So, in contemplating the media's response to tonight's Palin speech, I leave you with Margie's next line from the movie Fargo -- which you can interpret however you wish:

"Well, that passed. Now I'm hungry again."

Most of the media will cave and, to borrow from TPM's Josh Marshall, start swinging on the tire again. Too bad. There must be some who are embarrassed at their stenographer (instead of reporter) roles and propagandist (instead of columnist) roles. Now I think I'm going to barf.

I think I threw up just a little bit in my mouth.....over and over.....as I watched Palin last night. Since she's compared herself to a pitbull, I think the media should go after her like that. No kid gloves for this woman.

These are the days where we miss a voice like Tim Russert, he would have put her under the microscope.

The McKenzie Brothers come to mind when you pointed out the Fargo quote. "Back to the Great White North." Especially when Gov. Palin awarded the pipeline project to a Canadian firm.

I am insulted and enraged that the republicans think that any woman, regardless of her views, can substitute for Hilary Clinton's brilliance and dedication to ethical values that are both thoughtful and friendly to the needs of all women. This woman, Sarah Palin, is no friend to the female population: she is an extremist and ignorant, impervious to the developments of science and steeped in the middle ages of thought. Her anti stem cell stance is unfriendly and unkind to those of us with neurodegenerative disorders who count on research for a cure. Her anti education point of view and narrow mindedness about the science of evolution and the facts of environmental science are appalling and have no place in this century. This is a person I want making decisions for my country??!! No way!!! This mistake will take McCain down, it's just a matter of time.

In spite of the fact that I was not a Hillary supporter, I also find the comparisons of Palin and Clinton offending. Palin is representative of a huge step backwards for alot of what women (and men) have fought so hard for.

What you have to ask is why was Levi and his sister there for the birth of Trig...it shouldn't take too long to dig up the truth on these phony baloney bible thumping "conservatives". Nothing on this woman/family adds up.

Meanwhile, Obama is on the campaign trail talking about the economy. I think he's going to come out just fine. McCain has showed so little confidence in his running mate. To not let her loose for interviews really drives it home in all honesty he feels she really isn't ready. The media will do their watchdog jobs regardless, if he doesn't know that already then he's gotten crazier than I thought. His judgment is clouded and he can't be trusted. I wouldn't even think about it twice if the repugnicans weren't so good at spin and skulduggery.
10:07 AM on 09/04/2008
Skullduggery is now being staged for McCain by Rove who just spit in the eye of our congress's Judicial Committee, OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS.

I am horrified by McCain's incredibly bad judgment .His silly choice of his self-reported "soul mate", Political Barbie, underlines McCain's lack of concern for our nation's future AND SAFETY. Further, a VP candidate who cannot be questioned by the national press predicts a VERY SCARY ELECTION. .

As for McCain using the POW argument to excuse this nomination and other blunders", take a look at the YouTube site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KjsEs46C70

I offer you this interesting video of a POW who was in the same prison with Sen.McCain --Please pass this on to all media.

Palin wiil do well in her speech. The press, as they always do for Republicans, will not press too deeply into her stands on the issues. She will end up being a small net plus for McSame. No matter what might surface about her, the fundy base will support her to the bitter end.

The Democrats need to simply ignore Palin. McSame is the target. He is four more years of Bush's corruption, cronyism, incompetence, and debt. McSame/Palin is just Bush/Cheney with a fresh coat of paint.

McCain's the malfunctioning IED of Rove's operation.

I hope this one goes off in Rove's pudgy little hands.

i believe that real issues are starting to be discussed. her association with the aip. flimsy commander and chief experience. also eugene robinson finally stated that obama does have some accomplishments. the obama campaign needs to get more specific.

i feel that the bulk of her experience is as mayor. she left debt, tried to censor the library, went for earmarks, almost recalled, forced to hire a manager . . . the mccain camp is in trouble. censorship is the antithesis of our founding fathers and most america's concept of america. how will she answer questions regarding these and other issues as governor.

i understand hiding palin away till her speech . . . but to a large extent the story could be that you candidate is an exceptional woman however she can't handle speak with the press. palin has executive press speaking experience. i'd like to see mccain answering questions at a press conference . . . that'd be good right about now.

There would be positive stories out there too, if she would sit down and talk about them. Now one is going to take the word of a million spokespeople vouching for her, who we all know have never met her.

Chris, this is your second column this week about ms. gimmick, and you're certainly not the only one. yes, i know that media hype has a way of self-perpetuating, but it just sets my eyes rolling to see debates over something so obviously phony-baloney.

if i read another column about her, i think I'M going to barf.

I hear you. (see comment in text about wolves and sharks -- grrr! gnash gnash!!)

But McCain left the window open by keeping her from the press (she's got a briefing book or two to read), so we've only got one shot at defining her before she defines herself tonight. And it could wind up being crucial...

The only other thing out of the convention worth writing about was one "oops!" from the first woman I saw speaking last night, who said she supported "John McCain and Sarah Pawlenty!"

Heh heh. But you can't get a whole column out of that...
