Christopher Mailander is an international lawyer and advisor to multinational companies, international investors, and foreign governments with a particular focus upon direct investments and policy initiatives in emerging markets, including conflict and post-conflict nations. He has worked throughout the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Commonwealth of Independent States, and Sub-Saharan Africa, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Algeria, Ukraine, Georgia, and Armenia, among others.

He is particularly focused upon the strategic implications of leadership, decision-making, cross-cultural negotiations, and interpersonal communications at the intersection of international politics, local governance, and business. Previously, he has been an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center; an adjunct fellow at the foreign policy think tank, the Center for Strategic & International Studies; and a senior advisor at a global management consultancy.

Afghanistan's presidential elections, at least the first round, concluded on Thursday. The outcome is a bit murky. Voter turnout was mixed. Widespread fraud has been alleged. The Taliban scared many away, including reportedly hanging several voters in Kandahar. No awards will be handed out for orchestrating a pristine election.
