My major gripe is that I thought there would be more "music" in this musical show. Somewhat like a mature, sexy, Broadway version of GLEE. I enjoy the musical numbers on SMASH - even cheesy ones like "Redneck Woman" sung in an Iowa bar - much more than some of the poorly developed pot points and characters. McPhee is also a very good leading lady in this role.

Yes, there are many things that need to be fixed, but I will continue to tune in to see where it is going.

I agree! Katharine McPhee continues to surprise fans. I think she provides the much needed "pop" element to SMASH because not everyone is going to love Broadway show tunes. Variety is the key to more mass appeal. I'm a fan and think she's doing a great job in her first major acting role. Love the show and the whole cast. Can't wait to see how the story unfolds. Especially enjoyed McPhee's Mambo song and dance number in Episode 2! Can't wait for Monday nights! :)

You're both right. The show has a chance to breakout. I'm transfixed to see where it ends up going. There's a good take on it here: http://theairspace.net/filmtv/smash-brings-audiences-back-to-broadway/

Curveball... Ellis is STRAIGHT! Didn't expect that!

Very funny. This show is such a disappointment, so, so lame.

I'm loving the show and can't wait to see how the story unfolds. Clearly there are lots of other fans out here. Your "eyeroll" excuse for a recap is insulting to viewers and the show. If you don't care for Smash, I respect your opinion. However, just skip the show or write a legitimate review. Huffpost TV readers deserve better. Kat McPhee's performance has been a pleasant surprise. I'm a fan and think she's doing a great job in her first major acting role. Of course, Megan is a seasoned actress and performer on Broadway. People can't expect Katharine to be her equal but I think she's holding her own. Loved the Mambo dance number in Episode 2! Can't wait for next Monday! :)

Oh good, glad to read these comments, I thought it was just me. I loved this show from inception. Missed the 3rd one so I'll have to catch up. Pleasantly suprised with McPhee and will watch Debra Messing/Grace, read the phone book. Liked the fact that I kept looking for signs of Grace but did not see any.

9. "He's doing that Bruno Mars show." 10. That Bruno Mars show.

Ahahah classic, love this and the show even though it's so cheesy.

PS everything Ellis will always make my list

I stopped watching this show midway through the second episode. Kathrine McPhee is the best part of it. She has chops in acting and singing.
The other actors including Debra Messing and Angelica Huston are unbearably bad. The writing is weak.
Most of the scenes come across as a bad acting class.

I like it, McPhee is doing a good job.

Is it just me or is the guy who plays Debra Messing's writing partner (Ellis's boss) an absolutely awful actor... every time he pipes up I feel torn out of the story. How did this guy get a part on a prime time show? In some ways I guess it does make you realize that acting in a way that doesn't seem like acting is pretty tough...

Last night's episode was the worst by far, almost useless except to flesh out new and now unlikable characters. What was wrong with the assistant being a really nice, naive guy. They made him a jerk? Really? And the affair? "No one can know"???? I could have written that.

Predictability is not a good thing in the third episode of a brand new series. I liked the first two, but for me they have about 1 or 2 more episodes to make it better before I call it quits.

I hope that blackmail story line won't be major and such actions should no go unpunished. I just don't wanna it to be an acceptable solution to any problem.

Love this column, and I read it yesterday before I watched on DVR. I have to say the only things that really had my eyes rolling to the point of nearly hurting myself were the quaint little IOWA house and overhearing the affair. OF COURSE he did. UGH.
That said, I have to agree that Derek is a fox. (Do people still say that?! Ok, one more eye roll.)

Well, it beats the heck out of the plethora of reality shows that masquerade as entertainment. Granted, that bar is really low.........
