A Tale of Two "Million Moms"

Posted: 02/ 9/2012 2:58 pm

What's in a name? Well, a lot of confusion. Over the past week, a group named "One Million Moms" has campaigned against Ellen Degeneres and JC Penney for appointing her as its spokesperson. Yesterday, Ellen spoke out against One Million Moms on her show and mentioned the comments against her on their Facebook page.

Ellen's massive fan base promptly went online to take a stand against One Million Moms. They went to Google, Facebook, and Twitter and typed in "million moms." Hours later, One Million Moms deleted their Facebook page, and those searching for the group instead landed on the Million Moms Challenge -- a global health initiative founded by the UN Foundation, ABC News, and dozens of leading humanitarian organizations to raise awareness and funding to help mothers and babies around the world live healthy, happy lives. These two groups are similar in name, but not in mission.

Mistakenly, the Million Moms Challenge has been flooded with messages from hundreds of people expressing their disapproval of One Million Moms on Facebook and Twitter. The Million Moms Challenge Twitter handle is @AMillionMoms -- it can get confusing.

A week ago, when the comments began, the Million Moms Challenge was confused. As an initiative that backs access to proper nutrition, healthy pregnancies, training midwives to assist in safe deliveries around the world, why were we getting so many angry comments? Along with its community of blogging moms, the initiative and its world-renowned partners -- including ONE, Mercy Corps, CARE, March of Dimes, Baby Center, and Save the Children -- has worked hard to spread the word that these "Million Moms" are 100 percent focused on global health.

Luckily, every cloud has its silver lining. The mix up has directed thousands of new people towards pages promoting maternal and child health, and the number of Million Moms Challenge supporters is beginning to climb once again. Comments are beginning to say things like "Keep up the good work. Glad I found you looking to leave a comment on another page with a similar name!"

Let's take this opportunity to build on this momentum by raising awareness to promote healthy moms and babies everywhere. Learn more about the important work of the Million Moms Challenge at www.MillionMomsChallenge.org and let your social networks know that not all Million Moms are the same because you don't have to be a mom to help a mom, you just have to be one in a million.

Tired of One Million Moms and their attempted imposition of religious "morality" on non-religious institutions? Please join our brand new movement and help counteract the harm they've done. http://onemillionparents.blogspot.com/

Ellen is a very talented woman, she's courageous and inspiring. We need more her, less of the other.

Wonderful to see the bigots give themselves a black eye !! Especially when it helps the humanitarian work of the UN.

That's a highly beneficial and worthwhile institution getting peoples of different countries to work together and move way from the evil old system of warring states. No wonder the ignorant old haters of the Fox "News" world, hate it so violently.

We should defeat hate groups like OMM whenever they try things like this! http://www.facebook.com/defeat.hate.boycotts

I love it when good comes out of evil.

Komen throws PP under the bus...and gets rediscovered and lots of donations.

Homophobic bigots attack Ellen Degeneres and wind up bringing recognition to another charity that helps women:)

Yes, it couldn't happen to anyone more deserving of such a black eye as the vicous Karen Handler, failed extremist politician (to extreme even to win the Republican nomination for Governor of Georgia -- imagine that !!) and now FORMER overpaid senior VP of public affairs of Komen.

I love the unintended consequences of these campaigns to discriminate or remove rights of others.

Because of Komen's effort to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, PPH received a surge of donations (mine included), and people started noticing just how serious this attack on women's healthcare has become.

Because of a few (not a million) women trying to shun Penny's and ostracize Ellen, a worthwhile charity that helps babies and moms stay healthy gets well-deserved notice, and Penny's gets an upswing in sales.

If the far right keeps this up, all my favorite causes and charities will do very well this year!

A useful concept here is the "Streisand effect" -- an attempt to suppress publicity ends up generating far more unwanted publicity.

Yes, I contributed some money to Planned Parenthood as a result, too, and will do so again. PP raised $3 million in 3 days !! And I know they will spend every penny well (unlike Komen, with their $500,000-a-year politician CEO.

Fantastic article! What a classy way to take something negative and spin it into a positive. Put all the hateful energy towards Million Moms and give it to Million Moms Challenge in support (: and toss in a little "FU Million Moms" on your way out the door ;)
