What Kind of Mother's Day? A Question for Iran's President

Posted: 05/03/10 09:45 PM ET

Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal were detained by Iranian border guards on July 31, 2009. Their mothers are Cindy Hickey, from Pine City, MN; Nora Shourd, from Oakland, CA; and Laura Fattal, from Elkins Park, PA.

"When will we see our kids?" That's one of the questions we have for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is on his second visit to the United States since Iranian forces detained our children on the border with Iraqi Kurdistan, where they were on a hiking vacation. In the nine months since then, our children - Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal - have been almost completely cut off from their families and the wider world. We've written to President Ahmadinejad each time he has come to New York begging him to bring our children with him. While he is here, we wait for visas that we've been promised so we can at least visit Shane, Sarah and Josh in Evin Prison. We'd like to ask President Ahmadinejad where the visas are. We would also like him to tell us why our children have been allowed to call home only once, for a few brief minutes, and have no access to their lawyer. Or why Swiss diplomats who represent U.S. interests in Iran have been granted consular access only three times. On the last occasion on April 22, the first such visit for nearly six months, we learned that our children's despair is such that they are contemplating a hunger strike. Sarah has a serious gynecological condition that needs specialist care and is suffering from depression. The isolation, strain and uncertainty are damaging the physical and emotional welfare of Shane and Josh as well.

To say we are sick with worry does not begin to describe the range of emotions that we feel each day. We feel guilt and frustration at our utter powerlessness to help our children. We're angry that our hopes were raised when President Ahmadinejad said in September that he would make sure the Iranian judiciary expedited our children's case and ask for them to be treated leniently, only for nothing to happen. We feel the constant ache of separation as we mark the passage of time by the changing of the seasons - from summer, to fall, to winter to spring and, in a few weeks, back to summer.

We know that tensions between Iran and the United States have grown since Shane, Sarah and Josh were detained. But we continue to hope that Iran would rise above politics and treat the case for what it is, a consular matter, and release Shane, Sarah and Josh because it is the right thing to do. The authorities there have no grounds to keep them any longer. Undocumented entry is at most punishable by a fine. It's the only real allegation Iran can level against them, and even that is unproven. Iran clearly knows that, since they have been questioned only once in the past six months. So we are left to conclude that by punishing our children - and us too - Iran's leaders somehow believe they are punishing the U.S. government or gaining some form of leverage.

We have always believed that the people of a country sometimes stand very separate from their governments. We've taught our children never to judge individuals by the actions of their politicians and to be compassionate, respect the law and celebrate our differences, not fear them. One of the ironies of our situation is that our children live those values. Shane, 27, is a journalist who has written sympathetically about the lives of Palestinians. Sarah, 31, works on women's rights and empowerment through education. Josh, 27, is a committed environmentalist and educator. They actively opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq and take issue with many of the foreign policies pursued by successive American administrations. Yet the simple fact that they were born in the USA seems to be the only thing that counts for the people who will determine their fate.

Next Sunday, May 9, is Mother's Day in the United States. As that day approaches, many mothers are asking: "I wonder if we'll see the kids?" We're asking the same question. President Ahmadinejad, please finally give us the answer.

Please call things the way they are. It is even worst since the women according to reports lives in the region. They are not detained for being US. They were not picked up in the streets of any city, they are in this situation because they are either extreamly stupid, wanted to later on brag and write a book about their daredevil experience or are simply are quilty as charged.

I read about hypocrisy of Hollywood.

Hollywood has made two films about the same Persian dynasty.

First one 300 shows the dynasty as savage!

The second one "One Night With The King" shows the same Persian dynasty as beautiful, civilized people.

There is no absolute truth in US anymore. Everything is defined as Zionists as metric!

The second film has a Jewish princess and should be made that way for obvious reasons!

On behalf of the Iranians in exile I would like to show our dismay for the behaviour of this illegal regime. Normal sane Iranians do not do such things. The day will arrive when they will all face justice. Rest assured that each and every one of them is recognised and monitored. They will not get away with it.

Katty - you are truly path.etic - you cannot even offer simple compassion to the parents of young people held as pawns without simple civil liberties like lawyers.

I do not advise you to look at this picture, but it is an example of what the regime is doing to Iranian women. Moderators please remove it, if it is not suitable, and apologies.

Why would any mother allow their kids to go hiking in a war zone?

“President Ahmadinejad, please finally give us the answer.”

If he has no provable case to present, then Mahmoud must be acting in a misguided fashion. He is basing evaluation on an inadequate appreciation of the facts. By admitting that and releasing these hostages, he might open up a whole new methodology for addressing world problems. For example, allowing Israeli scientists into Iran, to confirm the absence of nuclear weapons. And Iranian scientists into Israel, for a similar purpose.

Ahmadinejad doesn't control the judiciary in Iran just as the US president doesn't tell the Supreme Court what to do. Don't forget he is an elected official not the King of Iran.

elected official - who are you kidding? These kids are being held as political pawns for leverage against the west.

And if the 'elections' showed us anything it is that the judiciary acts at the behest of Ahmadinejad and the Ayatollah.

Is it not true that the US government has funded anti Iraniian activity
and is it not true that Mossad has been active in the area
and is it also not true that the detained are Jewish?

What about 50 million dollar US congress passed to support Greens.
At least read your own Zionist media!
03:56 AM on 05/04/2010
Didn't they cross the border into Iran?
I guess, Ahmadinejad could address this question, but first, what does the United States do to people that cross into our territory illegally and get caught???
03:17 AM on 05/04/2010
What about the mother's of the innocent guantanamo detainees who were subject to harsh conditions and torture? What about them? We sent 300 of them back home without even an apology. Again I ask, what about them? Where is their justice?
03:56 AM on 05/04/2010
Exactly.

I read somewhere that the Iranians were paying the U.S. back for kidnapping and torturing Iranian Diplomats stationed in Iraq. Is that true? You cannot expect to invade countries, torture, kidnap, cause murder, mayhem and chaos against others and not have the same done to you. Where's the logic in that?

The uS Disney in fact arrest four Iranian dilplomats from inside the Iranian Consulate - a grave breach of international law and over the loud protests of the Iraqi govt- and held them for years claiming they were connected to the uprising in Iraq but then just releases them with mo evidence presented against them.
02:39 AM on 05/04/2010
You, mothers, are in the same position as how many other mothers of Guantanamo detainees? You are getting the same privilege of pain as they do. Unjustified detention pain.

Sad fact: the United States has unilaterally declared the international law on consular access to foreigners held in US jails is not binding on it and has even executed convicts from Mexico without ever letting the see a consular official. So the fact that the Iramians have allowed these three people who (let's face it) illegally entered their territory to see the Swiss consul three times means the Iranians have a better record of obeying international law than the US.
11:53 PM on 05/03/2010
"...the Iranians have a better record of obeying international law than the US."

Swallow a lot of propaganda, and this is the kind of statement that gets thrown up. The US indeed acted in bad faith over the three executed Mexican nationals, but they did receive a trial and were able to review the evidence against them. It's not my aim to justify what the US has done, but your logic insults our intelligence. Do you really want to compare how the US treats illegal border crossings to IRI?? Seeing a consular official is no substitute for a fair trial.

IRI has yet to charge the hikers with anything as far as I know. I'm with Desmond Tutu on this one, set them free and don't take hatred against the US govt. out on them (or at least charge them, let them have legal council, and see the evidence).

Umm I suggest you read your Patriot Act according to which even US citizens can be held in indefinite detention without a trial based on "secret" evidence that even a judge or defense lawyers are not allowed to see and can be subjected to waterboarding which is supposedly not torture. These are are all quite legal now along with warrentless surveillance. Oh and we now formally and legally issue orders to simply assasinate American citizens abroad with no trial or due process at all. We can teach the Iranians a few things. In fact who do you think helped Saddam use WMDs againt Iran during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war?
10:11 PM on 05/05/2010
At least they haven't invaded other countries based on false pretenses. You're so concerned about these 3 hikers who crossed into Iranian territory being held for roughly 9 months but say nothing about the over 300 America is holding at Guantanamo Bay for 9 years without charges.

Ahmadinejad is a disgrace- his actions will continue isolating Iran from the rest of the world. I'm embarrassed even to admit I have Iranian heritage.

I hope these three victims will be united with their families soon.

Because of a president you are embarrased of your heritage? Who said ajmadinejad represents all Iranians?

Ahmadinejad does - and he beat, detained and shot and tortured as many Iranians as it took to prove the point.
