Hello. My name is Claire Thomas and I'm an unabashed food enthusiast. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have turned food into an intellectual and grumbling-stomach driven passion. Because of my proximity to great restaurants and foodstuffs, the dive into the culinary arena has been exciting for an amateur gourmand such as myself. I'm certainly not a trained chef, but my incurable curiosity about food has pushed me to taste, create, and study anything and everything. I work as a personal chef, food stylist and photographer, using my blog, The Kitchy Kitchen, as an experimental playground. I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures as much as I enjoy writing about them. Happy eating!

Oysters on the Half Shell

Posted March 14, 2011 | 01:12:56 (EST)

I'm not quite Boss Tweed yet, who allegedly downed about 150 oysters in one sitting, but, I'm slowly getting there. Every Wednesday morning you can find me tasting my way through the farmer's market in Santa Monica. This is my happy place where I go to check out what's in...

This is an exquisitely simple recipe and a very classic one too. Lemon + garlic + chili + white wine + parsley + shell fish = awesome. Add bacon and pasta, and well, I mean, do I really need to go into it? Your kitchen will smell amazing, and this...

The DeVoto Martini

Posted September 7, 2010 | 13:13:07 (EST)

The martini for the martini purists. Based on the ideal from Bernard DeVoto's lyrical and facetiously toned book on America's greatest gifts to the world (hint: whiskey and the martini), The Hour, this martini reminds us that:

"We are a pious people but a proud one too, aware...

Melon Time!

Posted August 23, 2010 | 10:28:19 (EST)

My brother is searching for new khaki pants, the heat has started kicking up again, and I jealously watch coeds go book shopping, missing those days dedicated solely to intellectual absorption, so I guess this means summer's waning a bit. Apparently fruit didn't get this news. Melons abound, so ripe...

This is what I've been living off of for the past week. I bought two at the farmer's market, and four days later these suckers are just starting to wane. Reed avocados, especially this massive cannonball varietal, have officially eclipsed Hass as mi aguacate numero uno

Eating My Way through San Francisco in 24 hours

I had to drop my brother off at nerd camp a few weeks back (it's technically a "gaming academy" at Stanford, but really, "academy"? That's about as legitimate sounding as Costanza's "Human Fund." He swears he learned some coding, but by the looks of his unbrushed teeth and...

Vegan Truffles, Hot Cocoa, and their 19th Century Origins (PHOTOS)

Posted April 16, 2010 | 18:35:54 (EST)

I love food nerds. We're an odd group, nomads mostly, traveling from city to city, restaurant to restaurant, cameras in hand, scrawling notes and demanding answers from an already flustered wait staff. Always hungry, always searching, never satisfied. So when you bump into another one, there's a moment of recognition,...
