Bourbon Cocktails Fit for a Kentuckian

What's Your Reaction:

On today's episode of Kitchy TV, Whitney Adams of Brunellos Have More Fun and On the Lamb Food and Beverage mixes me the strongest bourbon dranks a non-Kentuckian can handle. Hollis Bulleit (yes, that's her real name, and no, she's not a character from a William Wyler film) joins us to discuss the merits of Bulleit Bourbon. Stay tuned for a Rose Garland Julep, Old Smashioned, and Pecan Milk Punch. Yum!

Rose Garland Julep
1 of 8
A classic mint julep scented with just a touch of rose soda, with this cocktail in your hand and a big hat on your head, you'll be all set to beat the summer heat.

Rose Garland Julep

4 mint leaves
Big pinch of sugar
Crushed ice
2 oz. bourbon
Rose soda

Tear and muddle the mint leaves in the bottom of glass with a few pinches of sugar and a few drops of bourbon. Add the ice and pour the bourbon and 2 oz rose soda on top. Stir with a bar spoon and top off with a little more rose soda. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Coconut butter, agave syrup and cacao nibs? Quick, somebody get me a pantry converter, I think I'm all out of nibs.

In his 1862 book, Jerry Thomas quotes Captain Marryatt: "As the ice melts, you drink. I once overheard two ladies talking in the next room to me, and one of them said, 'Well, if I have a weakness for any one thing, it is for a mint julep!'—a very amiable weakness, and proving her good sense and good taste. They are, in fact, like the American ladies, irresistible."

These are amazing! What great ideas. Not much of a drinker but these have inspired me.

I love a good cocktail.

Only a few caveats:

a) After having a Ramos Gin Fizz (recipe from New Orleans author/restauranteur/cousins Ti Martin & Lally Brennan, a.k.a., The Cocktail Chicks") it's difficult to find any other spirited beverage which compares.

b) I enjoy good sippin' bourbon so much, it's difficult to find anything that beats Maker's Mark over ice in a chilled highball glass. I would never adulterate its flavor with additives. That's what Jack Daniels is for----but the only cocktail I've ever found which improves upon even it--is the Joy of Cooking's Traditional Eggnog recipe.

c) "Moderation in all things is good, but too much whiskey is just enough" [or something like that]---Mark Twain

As a Kentuckian, I feel entitled to try each of these.

As a liberal, I feel entitled for the government to give me things instead of working for them (Rush told me this.)

Therefore, government, please send a fancy-pants fully stocked bartender to my dry county Appalachian home ASAP.

*LOL* Tell him to knock on Hardin County's door, too. ( still dry but nearly faltering. Maybe next vote. )

Ever Kentuckian deserves some bourbon for having to live in that state.

Oh, great. Thanks. I'll just skip down to Kroger and buy some Rhubarb Bitters, Rose Soda, and Coconut Butter. Oops.

I've little interest in drinks not called "Bloody Mary"......
luziannagirl   08:06 AM on 7/29/2010
Hey I don't blame you BrunoChopps. That's what I usually order when out at a party or gathering, if I have a choice, and the bartender doesn't have Makers Mark. It's hard to mess one up totally.

Learned a long time ago that most cocktails one doesn't make oneself from scratch----or one doesn't get from a handful of top New Orleans establishments known the world over for their cocktails----are going to disappoint.
