Rick Santorum, Have You No Shame?

Posted: 02/21/2012 6:57 pm

When I wrote my last blog, "Demonizing Obama and the Politics of 'Morality,'" I suspected there would probably be some effort by people opposed to the president's programs to obscure and distort the administration's initiatives on health care and unemployment.

We are not trying to carry President Obama's political water. There were several instances during his presidency when those of us who voted for Obama were critical of one or more of his positions on an important domestic or foreign policy matter, or of his perceived lack of decisive leadership on certain critical issues. In short, we are not, nor have we ever been, nor do we seek to be, an Obama cheerleader. However, neither are we deaf, dumb or blind.

The assault on the legitimacy of the president's personal Christian theology is nothing less than despicable. It is garbage politics; unworthy of serious political discourse.

Who determined that Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney or any other critic of the president's policies are qualified to judge the integrity or "acceptability" of President Obama's commitment to his Christian religion? Republicans, Fox News commentators, and right-wing radio should stop insinuating that the president's religious commitment is less than theirs. Rick Santorum, in a wink and a nod to his conservative base says Obama 'must be a Christian, if he says he is.' But, he won't acknowledge that the president, IS, IN FACT, A CHRISTIAN!! And, by the way, lest we forget, President Obama was for several years a member of Reverend Jeremiah Wright's church in Chicago.

Rick Santorum has home schooled his children. By doing so, that does not mean, that public education is less worthy or appropriate for other parents who send their children to public schools. Santorum, however, suggests that the public schools are "controlled by the federal government" and subject to President Obama's influence. Therefore, public schools today may no longer be an appropriate institution to educate our children. Is this really 2012?

Additionally, who appointed Santorum and other right-wing media talking heads as czars of what is appropriate for women to do or not do about birth control? Senator Santorum "says he is Catholic." We respect his religious beliefs. President John F. Kennedy was also Catholic. In spite of some initial fears at the time, he assiduously honored our Constitutional mandate -- separation of Church and State. He never sought to make his Catholic belief's national government policy. And, with all due respect to Senator Santorum, "he is no Jack Kennedy."

It's an understatement to say that our nation has become more ideologically divided in recent years. Some scholars and political pundits describe America today as being as divided as we were in 1860 at the time of Abraham Lincoln's election. Then, the principal issue dividing the country was the existence of slavery within several States in our Union.

As a young boy, I remember the presidential election of 1948; and, later, as an adult, those of 1960 thru Nov 2008. The current political acrimony between the Republican and Democratic parties is not in our nation's best interests. Nor is the continued effort to demonize President Obama and politicize the moral beliefs leading spokespersons in the Republican Party insinuate that he has, which are "radically" different from theirs.

We as a nation deserve better than this. We as a nation can be better than this.

From the day the President took office, Repubs have called him every viIe name imaginable! They have questioned his status as an American citizen, they have questioned his reIigion, they have questioned his love of country! Repubs have used every epithet imaginable to describe the President, except for those most appropriate.
1) Good husband
2) Good father
3) Good President
4) Good American
5) Good man

I think you are twisting Santorum's comment. What he said was that Obama had an approach to environmental issues that was like a religion. Which is the way a lot of liberals approach the matter of global warming and the environment-- that everything on the Earth is superior to Man, and Man must not be allowed to use or alter it in any way.

Santorum should back off the Christian talk....Most of us believe that Martin Luther freed us from the Corruption of the Roman Church in 1517...

The discussion by Santorum of Obama's religious beliefs is irrelevant. The latter is running for president, not priest or pope.

Really? The why are the Egyptians who fought for democracy, and Christians in the country who are being threatened and killed, asking why Obama is not supporting the Muslim Brotherhood? And why is he always attacking Christian organizations and holidays, but will recognize any muslim holiday that comes up?
10:18 AM on 02/23/2012
Please give a *legitimate* example of President Obama attacking Christian organizations and holidays.

Rick it's easy to be a Catholic...It takes a little more to be a Christian. You may want to start talking about the Economy....

There is no doubt that obamas religious beliefs are based on / from the ideal of ' social justice - wealth redistribution ' the backbone of Black Theology. This ' theology ' can best be brought to light from this quote by James Cone one of it's founders " A white man who is in power can not be a Christian unless he gives up that power and gives it to a black man ".
Rev wright taught this theology to obama for 20+ years.
There are many different versions of religions -
But this truth will not be considered P/C on this site - nope

And yet, it is not the President questioning the white man's Christianity - but the other way around. In this nation, we respect the right of all to worship in their own way. Our Constitution specifically forbids a 'religious test' to hold office, and our political leaders are asked to swear an oath to defend our Constitution against ALL threats, and to protect the rights of the Individual - not the rights of Institutions. Intolerance and bigotry are a plague on our Democratic Republic

just how do you explain obamas war on the Catholic Church ? If his actions concerning making this Church go against their basic teaching is in itself not just disrespecting the Constitutional right of free worship - but he is stomping that right - directly in the mud.
It's easy to see however - that he was not raised as a Christian - because if he was - he would know the power [ Catholic Church ] that he is messing with.

I enjoyed your post, it is very well written with valuable points, thank you. I am terrified at the tone of the GOP candidates, their outright lies and leaps of "moral conclusions" that are patently lies and immoral. Even we people of pinkness (rather than say white,) fought in the civil rights movement to help evolve a true sisterhood and brotherhood across racial, economic and religious divides. I love our President, respect him enormously, VOTED for him and will again. He is a bright hope. I support him completely.

We should go our separate ways. States can choose to align with each other and whichever group contains more of the original thirteen states that have never seceded before gets to call itself America.

There should be several years for everyone to decide which of the new countries they want to live in and after that the Empire is over. Unity is overrated. The far right can all join together. We will arm ourselves against their aggressive tendencies and we will trade with them if they are amenable to that. Other than that I would not have anything to do with their country. I have nothing in common with them and nothing but bad feelings towards them.

What the cons are saying is that integrity is a liberal 20th century conceit, and their values would never handcuff America so unfairly.

When slavery was legal, a special form of Christianity had to evolve to justify and accommodate it. That form didn't go away after the Emancipation Proclamation, it seems to be surging even now.
02:49 PM on 02/22/2012
I think you got it backwards. When slavery was legal a special form of christianity had to be evolved to reject it. Or perhaps you've neglected Leviticus or the total lack of direction from the New Testimate?
