Get In the Best Shape of Your Entrepreneur Life

You already know that consistent exercise helps improve your overall health. But, did you know that it could also help improve your business? Exercise can help improve relationships, provide clarity and give you the confidence you need to make hard decisions.

Improve Relationships

Exercise helps improve both personal and professional relationships, especially if you're having a hard time finding the opportunity to connect regularly with someone.

Working out with my dad has improved our relationship over the past few years. He's always a great reason to stick to my workout and it's fun to spend time with him. Our workout time gives us a chance to catch up on life in-person instead of over the phone.

As the CEO of Infusionsoft, I often see managers and staff holding one-on-one meetings while walking around the facility. Some of our employees say it's their favorite meeting because it feels less formal and helps them feel comfortable sharing what's on their mind.

Gain Clarity

Running or biking can help you when you're struggling with a persistent problem in your business that you're unable to solve. According to the Harvard Business Review, regular aerobic exercise increases the part of your brain that's responsible for learning and memory.

When I'm exercising, I find that I'm more mentally sharp and can work through problems better. It gives me a boost of confidence and helps me throughout the day.

Get Back On Track

Establishing a routine is important, but you must first commit to an activity that you enjoy. If you view exercise as a chore or a task to cross off your to-do list, then you're less likely to succeed. My routine is boring, but I like it and it works for me. I wake up at the crack of dawn and drive to the gym. I stretch until 5:00, work with weights for 40 minutes and finish with 40 minutes of elliptical training.

It's normal to start an exercise regime and quit after a few months. Last summer I had a goal of being in the best shape of my entrepreneur life. Then we decided to raise money and my exercise routine got thrown off. I would exercise occasionally, but I wasn't nearly as consistent as I had been before going into raising-capital mode. When we closed the financing round, I had to make myself reestablish the habit of working out every morning. Sometimes life happens but then you have to get back on track. I took some time to reassess my goals and created a new plan to reach them. Today, I'm fitter than I have been in years.

Invest in Yourself

Your health and vitality slip away as you age if you don't take the time to invest in yourself. I start to get frustrated when I spend all of my time balancing work and family and don't take time out for myself. The gym is one of the few places where nobody knows me and where there isn't a demand on my time. I can invest in myself and become a better person.

Exercise is one of those activities that provides a positive return on investment not only for your well-being, but also for the bottom line of your business. Being healthy and having a clear state of mind helps you make choices that are reasonable and well thought-out. As a small business owner, you won't be ready to compete in this world if you don't take care of yourself.
