This is a non-issue. Simple dumb mistake anyone could have made. Let's look at his policy positions instead, which are the real problem.

intellectual laziness is not a good thing in a president, as we've seen with GWB and such contenders as bachmann and perry. i don't think these are good traits for a leader of this nation, so it is relevant.

Maybe if they still had half decent history books in Texas public schools Rick Perry would be better equipped to know when the Revolutionary War happened. Nah, he'd still have to read them.

The scary part is that they DID have good books back then. They have been changing them to suite their "country" in the last few decades. So what will the Rick Perry of the future look and sound like??????

Maybe not a 'debater in chief' but basic facts learned in school are just that basic, and especially someone running for POTUS HAS to know the basics to be commander in chief. Before W, they all seemed to know basic civics and history of the USA. Obviously since W the USA citizen doesn't give a darn whether we know stuff or not.

The fact that Rick Perry was a republican front runner is more indicative of small minds than the fact that the rest of America ridicules his dishonesty and ignorance.

Who hasn't paused before calculating which century describes the year of events? He must have thought "1776" but then backed up instead of jumped ahead.

But he was speaking to Dartmouth students, who, even if they are frat boys, deserve a well vetted quip. Sad to say, but Perry should keep his quips holstered and let his staff check the safety before he fires.

Who hasn't paused before calculating the century? Are you kidding me? Maybe 18th or 19th for some historical times, but 16th? Are you KIDDING us?
Sheesh.

I think he's old enough to have learned that if he can't think of which century, to say "1700s" rather than try.  I remember when I was a kid, that it was tricky to understand.  Honestly, as an adult, it's not been complicated to remember -- but usually people who get it wrong say "17th century" when they mean "18th century".  16th?  I know it was a gaffe, and there is so much wrong with everything he has to say, but it seems to stretch to find any reason for him to get it wrong.  Whatever -- he's a joke any way you cut it.

Perry, Bachmann and Palin are just a few SHINING examples of one of the Republican Party BIGGEST platforms -- not valuing education.

That Party doesn't believe education has a place in our lives. They apparently believe IDEOLOGY is all you need to govern by.
