Yeah. The schools. These people don't speak from an organic place of experience. Meanwhile your posts and ven 0m actually make their case .

While I do think that it is stereotypes rather than racism this group is against, I do think that they are taking the costumes too seriously. Some people do actually fit the stereotype anyway, so why get upset? The whole point of Halloween is to have fun dressing up and eat lots of candy. If someone dresses up in a costume that reminds me of myself, then I will laugh because it feels good not to be so serious.

I'm thinking that because of they are aware of the history of these images it hurts them to see people make fun of them. The same way that it was "bad" when one of the princes was Hitler or if people wore concentration camp outfits they see it as bad that someone wants to wear blackface.
10:43 PM on 10/29/2011
Some people would say that history is history, but most people probably aren't aware of the history behind the images so they take it lightly. If they are living in an area where racism is frequent, then I understand why the group is doing what they do. I get your point, but not everyone is prejudiced or racist. I understand what discrimination feels like because I'm bi-racial but I'm not threatened by these costumes because I know who I am and I don't let things like this make me feel bad. If it were a friend who were feeling threatened because of this, then I would stand up for them. However, if no harm is being done, then I don't see why this should be an issue. If the group is that threatened, then they just need to surround themselves with people who like them for who they are.

If you are a racist you are desperately in need of help! Don't be afraid to get one before unhappiness kills you.

This just screams "I am too scared to address the real problems in society so I am going to make a fuss about made-up issues because I am completely insecure about my cultural identity."

Honestly, go tackle problems like the economy or the environment, race is only an issue if you keep making it one. You can't just be "against this" or "against that." Find something that you are FOR and you will find yourself much more at peace with the world around you.

Never seems to fail how WHITES cry foul when they are mocking and sterotyping ethnic groups with their stupid costumes.. eg whats up with whites wearing green afro wigs? . Funny I dont see ethnic groups commonly dressing up as pimply faced faced hillbillys and rednecks and the klan.. Suddenly when they are called on their corny garrish racism suddenly they pull the " politically correct " card and cry foul.. geez its 2011 white people.. get a clue

So I can't dress up as Huggy Bear? or Shaft? or Chef (South Park) or Black Vulcan? because I'm not the right skin color? Really?
10:53 AM on 10/28/2011
Really? We see it all the time here. The "redneck" is easy as hell to do and almost always done by someone non-white. You can purchase the "hillbilly" at any costume store. Even I have done the redneck cowgirl thing. I also saw my first "ginger" last year, done by a hispanic. And I am not offended when I see a "German Heidi," "beer wench" or "lederhosen" and I am half German, and was largely raised there until I was 17. I always assumed these costumes were tongue in cheek. Not to be taken seriously.

That banana costumes way too racist it has offend me...
12:37 PM on 10/28/2011
I can read the sarcasm in your comment, and that's a good thing. I have a sense of humour and am not so dense to see someone wearing a sombrero and think "yes, all Mexicans look like that". The banana costume to most people would think its completely harmless, It's fruit! But it's also a term to categorize Asians who have been white washed (yellow on the outside, white on the inside).
You're always going to find a way to make any costume offensive in some way. Some of the examples provided by STARS, like the Japanese Geisha, is grabbing at straws.
IF someone is that ignorant to think that all Japanese girls are Geisha's, then yes they should be educated. But this doesn't always coincide to a persons choice in costume. I dress up as a cowboy because its fun, not because I think all Americans ride horses and carry guns.
Think people!

just a note. the girl holding the japanese costume is not japanese. the kid holding the mexican costume is not mexican. looks like these racists need to know that not all asians are japanese and not all latinos are mexican, and wheres the pictures of a girl in a dirndl holding beer? oh yea thats not racist because they're white.
07:23 PM on 10/27/2011
Oh and you would know their ethnicity how?
12:58 AM on 10/28/2011
i went through their website and contacted the people in charge. it turns out the models in the images aren't club members but were hired for the shoot. then using the names it wasn't too hard to track them down. would you like to ask another stupid question?

01:55 PM on 10/27/2011
As a pirate ninja I get very offended when people dress up as either. You don't know my lifestyle or the humiliation I go through being a pirate ninja. DO NOT DRESS UP AS A PIRATE OR NINJA IF YOU DO NOT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY! Hey STARS... Suck it! You are taking thing way over the top. People aren't dressing up to make fun of an ethnicity. People are dressing up to have FUN... Something you clearly do not understand. As someone of Japanese descent dating a biracial woman I see nothing wrong with dressing up as anything you want. Sometimes humor is the best form of flattery... Of course you have to have a sense of humor to be flattered.

The steroetypes that are often made fun of are a reality that many people of colour have to live with on a daily basis. The stereotype that Japanese women are to be fetishized like Geisha, that middle eastern men are dangerous fanatics, that black people are all want to be rap stars, that latino people are primitive, etc. I don't think these costumes are harmless. I think they help to enforce stereotypes that make it harder for people to be judged as individuals due to pre-conceived notions and confirmation bias. I understand wanting a funny costume, but there are a whole lot of jokes out there that don't make fun of people based on ethnicity. Why not just play it safe and refrain from making fun of a culture you are not a part of?
03:44 AM on 10/28/2011
Because we would rather not be uptight paranoid cowards. Being a minority does become a living hell because a white guy wears a sombrero on Halloween. It does make life for lots of people hard if you spend all of your energy looking for any excuse to be offended. We don't need to live on pins and needles, we are Americans and should have no reason to fear one another.

I doubt they would be offended, they aren't part of any particular group that is whiney or hypersensitive about nothing.
