How many other innocent children were victimized because these men did not step up and file charges in 1998? How can they live with themselves? Each and every one of them should be held criminally and financially responsible for their crime of silence and as accessories to the crimes committed against these boys! I am outraged and ashamed that trusted adult men participated in this coverup. I hope they all have to pay with their time and money and that still will not give these children back the innocence and trust they lost. Hurt a child in front of me and you will have hell to pay!

Precisely, and the sad thing is, through this tragedy we will see why a million kids a year are abused and why we can't end child abuse in this country. And to the victims of this horror, their parents and families- I hope you find justice. I hope you find healing and I hope you can take comfort and peace from those of us who are truly human and know this was wrong. For Paterno, Sandusky, Mcqueary, and I know others knew, and didn't do what was morally right, even if legally right, I hope to hell these parents and kids teach you a lesson you'll never forget.

Fire everyone who didn't have the moral fortitude to save these children.

Did any of these witness interupt Sandusky and punch him out for what he was doing. They catch him in the act and dont call 911, or punch Sandusky out, or keep him from leaving, or taking boy to hospital, police. Come On people. I cant believe this happened. Is this what our society has become. How could you walk away from an innocent defensless child in need of help!!!!!!!!!!!! God have mercy on all your souls....youre gonna need it.

WTF?!?!?!?!? Who sees a child being assaulted and doesn't INTERVENE IMMEDIATELY!?!?!?! How can the people that just let it happen LIVE with themselves?? When you see someone getting raped you stop it!! OMG!!! I really do not understand how all of these sighting, complaints and issues didn't land this creep in jail years ago!! UnfreakingBelievable!

Anyone who reads this timeline and uses it to somehow exonerate Paterno completely misses the point. Absolutely horrific how all these adults failed at so many different times and with so many opportunities to do the right thing and now countless children will pay the price for their whole lives.

I am so enraged over how these .. men (for lack of a better word) handled this situation. It is beyond me how they managed to get a decent nights sleep with the HORRIFIC knowledge they concealed for YEARS. Who in the hell is going to protect our children if not us (ALL OF US) as a community? As I always say, indifference to a crime is no better then the crime itself.
03:47 PM on 11/11/2011
Right. If you let someone hurt a child then you are guilty too. I believe that all of the people who work in education are Mandatory Reporters. By law, not just decency, they are required to report any suspected child abuse! The Mandatory Reporting law makes them criminally liable I believe.

And coaches are often the only people to whom parents feel they can safely entrust their children. Sandusky founded his charity under the guise 'helping' troubled boys and children with no other adult male role models; the most vulnerable and easiest prey.

Oh, and did you happen to see that only a chain link fence stands between Sandusky's backyard and an elementary school less than a mile away?

It's just disgusting that people can overlook these awful sex acts just because they care about football.

It's like Romans feeding Xtians_to the lions, and enjoying it.

Sick, sick country.

Male dominated institution fails to protect young boys when the ugly truth is right in front of them. It matters not the excuses given; this was a complete failure top to bottom. It is truly unbelievable.

Did you read what they wrote? He admitted to hugging a naked child, not his child, in the shower while he was naked, and "he knew it was wrong". That's enough right there, you don't need any other evidence. People get sent away to prison for life for having pictures of naked children on their computer, how in the **** can you say with a straight face that HAVING a naked child in front of him and then HUGGING that naked child while you're naked doesn't rise to that level? That's a full commission of a crime, they did not need any other evidence to convict.

Maybe the victims should seek counseling within the Catholic Church . . . Oh Wait . . . that's probably not a good idea. I guess JoePa's bigger thatn The Pope. How come The Church has been getting away with covering up their abuses for centuries. But JoePa's face is plastered all over the front page of my local paper.

The right thing for the Board to do is to end the football season, fire the entire coaching staff and shut the program down for a minimum of a year. Then hire a fresh coaching staff and rebuild the program. The answer now is not winning, it is removing a stench which still remains with the program. Yes they will lose some major revenues, but it is far better to be clean in the long run, than to be dirty in the short run. Not a popular move, but necessary.

I'm not completely against your idea, but that would negatively impact so many innocent people, namely the football players who chose to play at Penn State for the legendary coach Joe Paterno, not the cover-up artist Paterno. These guys, like those who are on USC for example would be punished for something they had absolutely no idea about. the People who work for the stadium, concessions and all would be hurt as well, not a good option in this economy.

Sad all the way around.

Beyond words how many adults failed these boys.

The District Attorney should barred for not pressing criminal charges back in 1998, which could have prevented several other boys from being violated...disgusting!
I think Paterno did his job & felt it was being handled. It was none of his business beyond reporting to officials that needed to do their job.

If you read, they wanted to but there was not enough evidence to build a court case, just hearsay.

There was enough evidence! He confessed. Someone made the DA shut it down. This is obviously bigger than just a few college administrators.

I read.

The time line says "Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong."

As someone else observed, people go to prison for having pictures of naked kids on their computers. This perve ADMITS to having a naked little boy in his arms -- a criminal act.

The authorities had sufficient evidence to build a case on, they just didn't want the scandal for their beloved local college and coaches.

esquinn, the law is clear. Paterno should have gone to the police as should the men who saw the rape of the boy in the shower.

Paterno should have called the police...seems like he was his own boss. Heard on the news.. someone from the school went to Paterno's home to suggest to him that he retire and Paterno thru him out. This man was Penn State and should have reported what he knew how these kids being molested to the police. He should have been fired imho.
