Um, Leaving Las Vegas and Elephant weren't exactly rays of boundless sunshine for me.

How about "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead". It just had such dark, dark characters and despairing subject matter. Yersh.

Interestingly, my 4-year-old watches that one over and over. (Toy Story 3, not Requiem for a Dream.) He doesn't seem to find the incinerator scene nearly as traumatic as many adults do.

They forgot David Fincher's "Se7en". It's a great film in some ways but I've never felt the need to ruin my mood by watching it again.

Eden Lake is another disturbing film with Michael Fassbender. I could only watch In the Company of Men once and while Christian Bale was fantastic, The Machinist is really disturbing, too.

Sophie's Choice, Apocalypse Now...great films that I couldn't watch twice. I didn't make it through the enire film Forrest Gump. I had to leave. As the mother of a son with autism, I couldn't stand the laughter and jokes at Forrest's expense...nor the storyline.

Man, the first movie I thought of was Schindler's List. That movie was so amazing, but really tough for me to get through. And although I tell everyone I know that they should watch it, I'm always so afraid they will want me to watch it with them.

Pink Flamingos anyone? Seriously, the most disgusting film I've ever seen...how could Saw be on here and not this? Oh and not a single Asian entry? Sion Sono is the most disturbing filmmakers imho (Suicide Club, Noriko's Dinner Table, Hair Extensions, Strange Circus to name a few). Park Chan-wook's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance has also got some really bad scenes (I love it though!).

I would guess that Bully would be on here before KIDS, but I have only read things about KIDS and seen Bully. I would also think that American History X would be on here because I don't know anyone who saw that movie that was not disturbed to their core. However, I must be the odd ball out because I like movies like Bully, American History X, Monster and Requiem for a Dream and have watched them more than once.

So many great entries here! I would probably call Kids more of a Larry Clark effort than Harmony Korine, though. Can we put Gummo up instead? That is one I wish I had seen negative one times. Lol. Never been let down by Michael Haneke... or really most of the directors here. All of these titles bring a certain kind of misery into stark relief and really challenge you to not leave your seat or hit stop.

I saw Gummo when it came out and I STILL can't get the image of him eating spaghetti in that filthy bathtub out of my head.

Fat Girl sounds like the foreign market title of Precious, which I am surprised didn't make your list.

Didn't read all 150+ comments but how in THEE HELL did *Irreversible* miss this list? Was it slapped together in 15 minutes? Many of those listed I've seen many times.

Haha, yes! The title of this article is the basically the premise and raison d'etre of Irreversible. Good catch.
