he didnt rape her which means she wanted it but will she got punished along side of him i bet not
10:51 AM on 01/08/2012
He was her teacher, which makes a difference, and she was not of the age of consent. And of course she will be "punished" for the rest of her life if she has a viable infant.

"He was her teacher, which makes a difference..."

According to Michigan law it only makes a difference if she is not an emancipated minor under the age of 18... which she is.

"...and she was not of the age of consent."

Let's not muddy the water here. She was above the age of consent, which is 16 in Michigan. He is not being charged with statutory.

I agree he did not rape her...... but I think we have to be honest he did study brain development. He did know that she was at a volnerable age. He did take advantage or her. But, how is that different from many marriages?

Wait...this is a 17 year old...he didn't force himself on her, it was consentual sex however because he wanted her to have an abortion she THEN decides to complain about him? In other words, this girl pretty much would NOT have complained had he 1- not gotten her the abortion pills and made some I'll stick with you pledge, 2- If she had not gotten pregnant in the first place. This girl is 17, not 8, not 10, not 13 or in that range...she is 17. We all know unless you had some kind of mental issues at 17 we were held accountable for our actions and decisions, you knew right from wrong and alot of times...hell still chose the wrong. This girl sounds like she is complaining because she probably got her hopes dashed and knows her parents may lose it to find out she'd been sleeping with the teacher...so standard move, play the victim. I have to call b.s. in this case, to get fired yes which is like a death sentence with those charges on your record good luck getting another job but jail time? no.
10:54 AM on 01/08/2012
A matter for the courts in that jurisdiction to decide, I should think. However, there are rules for teachers that are somewhat different from those outside the educational system. He will not get another teaching job, nor should he. He cannot be trusted with his students. As to the girl, she is at fault as well, but at age 17 a lot of people don't have the good judgment that comes with maturity, and girls of that age get carried away with the "romance" of it all--until they find themselves pregnant.
11:25 AM on 01/08/2012
And at age 18 they have suddenly gained so much more maturity that they are considered an adult.
10:21 AM on 01/08/2012
The "family and friends" who will vouch for his character should wait for the DNA results.
10:55 AM on 01/08/2012
Family nor friends can vouch for the character of another person--they can only say what they THINK of his character. And they can be wrong.
12:10 PM on 01/08/2012
I agree. Therefore they might do well to temper any enthusiastic endorsements until more is known.

If the gender was reversed, the comments would be lucky boy. Maybe she was the seducer?

Very True Indeed!!!
And he will do 10 times more prison time then if it was a woman teacher with a boy student.
IMO any 16-17 year old person knows exactly what they are getting into when this happens and while I dont beleive its right for teacher-student relationships all the blame cant be placed on the student every time this happens. But to be clear I am strongly against sex with minors and the laws the law

Take out the tenure policies in schools. Teachers should be reviewed and evaluated periodically, with random classroom monitoring. Get the bad teachers out. Hire new teachers that will do there job, educate out children.

If we did that based on student performance there would be no teachers. A teacher can't make a child prepared to be in school in the morning, and that is the deciding factor for most kids (success versus failure is directly related to morning prep/sleep/focus). If you take out tenure, etc., every single benefit of being a teacher, you won't have them and what you will be left with is the dummies. You'll get what your're trying to remove.

Unfortunately we live in a world that is inrigued by a 17 year old married to a 51 year old, makes them celebrities, and then we have issue with a 40 some year old teacher and a 17 year old student who is likely of age of consent in her state?

Here lies the problem and until we remove these double standards this will continue.
10:13 AM on 01/08/2012
As a former teacher, I know it is best to keep one's distance from the students. Everything is to be professional. However, I can say that I found in my first few years of teaching, many of the girls do flirt with the younger male faculty members. Keep in mind that I started at age 21, and I was only three years older than some of the seniors. I think there is a big section of this story is missing. There is a difference between being abused sexually and being a willing participant. Today's teens have had sex very young, and by 17 they are aggressive and will stop at no means to get the guy they want. When it fails, they will use whatever means to take the person down. Let's be realistic and look at the entire situation. As a minor, she will probably ruin this guy's career because she will be treated as the victim. It is unfair, but this is the system we as American have created.

I have always held the policy to be friendly, but never friends. Without reguard to her "willingness," it is wrong for an adult (especially a teacher) to have sex with a 17 year old. There are Power issues involved in the relationship that can not be resolved by her placing herself into the situation willingly. In the end, he is the adult, and should have made the adult decision, to wait until after graduation and her 18th birthday... Then they can do what they want.
11:00 AM on 01/08/2012
A George Arees....There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for ANY teacher to have sex with a student. There is no justification regardless of how "aggressive" the student is. JUST SAY NO! Seriously? While I realize there are students who are shameless in their attempts to "get what they want", they are still minors and they are still clueless as to what the consequences of their actions will be...for both themselves and the teacher. Regardless, there are still NO exceptions. Not only is it against the law (and it damn well SHOULD be!), it is just wrong! Teachers, like any other trusted professionals (doctors, police, fire etc) are in a position of power and it is up to them to control themselves. That being said, there should also be policies in place to help with situations that inevitably come up in these type of interactive situations. A teacher etc., should feel comfortable in reporting instances of agressive advances from students before things get out of hand, without having to worry about things being turned around against them. No one said it is fair or easy, but it is commonplace.
BTW George...she IS the victim. She's still the minor and no matter what the age difference or how "aggressive" she was...the teacher knew better...as I certainly hope that YOU did.

He got her abortion pills. Unless she knows something about him that she could not know unless he was exposed to her... some unusual feature, or something... Or unless she kept some evidence, it may be difficult to actually prove that they had sex.

But did she take the pills? Is there proof of it? Was she ever really pregnant? This article never says what happened or if she is still pregnant. I do think the person who asks for the pills, has to be the one who needs the pills. I wasn't aware a man could go in and just purchase them.

I liked the sex ed comment. This is a condom. This is what happens when you don't use one; but no worries there is a special pill which will make your irresponsibility all better; and if that doesn't work there is another form of birth controlled called abortion. This shows the decline of American morales.
11:00 AM on 01/08/2012
The "adult" is the responsible party, that is why he is called an "adult--" he's a grown up male teacher and HE KNOWS BETTER than to get sexually active with one of his students!
11:34 AM on 01/08/2012
Well that being said this girl is no more than 12 months away from being an adult herself. She not only spent time with this man in front of other teachers and students in school but in front of people in her community. I think that these charges against the teacher should be dropped (sexual assualt charges etc). However, I am in agreeance that teachers have a line drawn that they should not be crossing in regards to personal, physical relationships with their students. So sure he should loose his job. How can children go to school and be successful at when this stuff is going on? Why didn't the parents or other teachers stop it? If other students were clearly aware of the relationship than it doesn't seem as though they were hiding anything. They were out in the open with it. I say let it be, slap his wrist, and enforce stiffer school regulations.

We put all our trust into teachers and coaches and find out later, that most of them go into teaching or coaching so that can prey on younger kids. I see high school teachers checking out high school girls all the time lol. I think older men will always like younger woman, its been happening since the start of time lol.

If most were predators we wouldn't get any educating done. Your position is a reach.

Men are visual. Many high school girls are gorgeous and likely at the height of their beauty. Any male will look - only a man will refrain from touching.

There is a difference between looking and touching. One is legal, unpreventable, and not immoral. The other, the opposite is true.

Yes, we all know there was no sex between teachers and students before they took GOD out of the Schools... Are you intentionally ignorant, or is it just something forced upon you by a set of religious dogma you have not thought enough to get rid of?

School board review, fired for misconduct yes, but jail time? I don’t think is should be that way. There are many details that aren’t answered. Some 17 year olds know what they are doing. It could be the fact that things didn't quite work out the way she wanted. But the bottom line was he should have kept his pants on, bad moral judgment on his part. Should we give him jail time for bad morals? There are women that are being prosecuted for misconduct. It is happening in Colorado.

Uh, 17 years old is illegal... We have decided that a 17 year old does not have the maturity or the ability to make decisions for themselves and need to be helped by their parents (contracts, marriage, employment, etc. all need parental approval until 18). There is good history and science that backs this up. If you want to lower the age of responsibility... when a person can be responsible for themselves, that is a political discussion, but for now, in most states, if you are under 18, you can not DECIDE to have sex with someone and have that make it legal. 17 year olds are not allowed to make many decisions.
