They should also teach these students camping skills. When they graduate college with their useless degrees in Gender Issues, they will at least have some survival skills, since they will lack any and all skills that would make them employable.

How about teaching kids the basics instead of trying to brainwash them. Is it any wonder the teachers union has our kids near the bottom of the barrel in education worldwide...

Teachers' unions do not make decisions about school services, curriculum, administration, efficiency of spending, or implementation of the bigger systematic problems that plague our schools. Teachers' unions have no impact on school districts hemoraging money to the latest fad curriculum or testing companies. Unions do not have any influence over the incompetence of many of the self promoting district level and school based administrators. Unions do not get to dictate how a district manages its resources. In my district, every administrator got an iPad this year. My principal barely knows how to turn it on. Money well spend across the district. Instead of spending on services that will benefit the students, my boss has a mobile video game toy. Many of us teach in right to work states. I am not a union member, and my district is being run into the ground by bureaucrats. Its not a union issue.

I agree. A friend of mine from Germany, which we know has good education, said that they spend less than we do but almost all goes to the classroom. The educational system is like everything else in today, too top heavy.

The WORLD doesn't leave the kids alone. The kids aren't immune to everything. Do you want these kids living in bubbles until they're adults and then go into culture shock when they're hit in the face with it? Kids aren't blind or ignorant when their homes are foreclosed on and the whole family is out in the streets or living in shelters, or when Mom and Dad can't find work to pay the bills. They're very much affected, too.

Why is these kids making up this song worse than kids being bombarded with Viagra commercials, news about women and children missing almost on a daily basis, seeing bloody fighting going on all around the world, seeing animals in Congress talk about cutting funding for their sick grandparents, calling those who honestly want to work, lazy, dirty, and told to take baths; seeing all those God awful campaign ads that spew nothing but hatred, and on and on and on? We all know that none of the parents EVER talk about any of this or watch any of this on TV, right? Wrong!

With the legacy that WE are creating to leave for these kids, you'd better hope they have some idea of what they will face, be better equiped to deal with, and, more importantly, will be able to solve their overwhelming problems.

I would MUCH rather see kids creating songs like this than being dumbed down with video games, not having a clue what was happening in the real world.

You obviously feel strongly about this, and I chose you to spar with because you seem like my friends with whom I'm able to disagree.

I think we can be sure Kid Pan Alley's goal isn't political and that they just trying to give kids some appreciation of musical Americana roots while teaching some musical skills... at a time when schools lack funding for the basics, mush less art, music and sports.

I can see where you might question the "Kid Pan" folks for "hearing" that 99%-er idea over the din of other ideas. When I was a kid I wrote about cars, girls, teenage issues and some mild "protest-ish" stuff.

It's the same for kids today, and doesn't amount to brainwashing... it's normal. Well, at least normal to 99% of us.

PUT ANOTHER WAY: Would you be against kids getting musical education be denied a section on Wood Guthrie songs? His musical canon is part of our proud folk heritage, yet is strongly pro-union, anti "The Man" and dealt with a lot of hobos, to boot.

I'd rather have kids at least experience this little bit of the tradition of populist empathy in music, rather than sing the praises of the super-rich. The song seems to glorify the kind of values I hope kids of all ages hold dear, namely to value a life that's not based on materialistic wealth.

I heartily agree. There are some recent studies on the effects of music on the brain and it is truly amazing. I love Woody and Arlo, Pete Seeger, Peter Paul and Mary and many more. This is music with true passion and vision. Also Elvis, Costello, that is- What's so funny about peace, love and understanding? Better than war, hate and bigotry. Much more productive and profitable.

He should tell the kids that whether they strive to get As in school, or if they want to be doctors or lawyers or if they choose to just stay home, cut school, stay unemployed, if OWS had it their way, everyone will be paid the same.

OWS is not against capitalism. They just want some reforms so that Wall Street can't hold the country hostage when they completely mismanage their nefarious "business" schemes. We want guarantees they won’t be bailed out with hardworking taxpayer funds and then pay themselves lavish bonuses. We need to end Citizens United which simply corrupts politics even more than it already is by stuffing corporate money into politician’s pockets.

Sounds like these kids are the children of one of Mitt Romney's companies. They could retitle it "Bain's Kids".

3rd grade. There's NO WAY these kids weren't influenced to write this song.
01:10 PM on 01/10/2012
Agreed. 3rd graders do not have pride, money, or a home. Seriously who doesn't want more money? I fail to see why we fault people who have earned a lot of money to suddenly stop. Plus the only way to earn money (in a free market) is to sell stuff people want. We should have less regulations not more. By creating regulations we create crony capitalism (fascism) where the state decides who earns money and who does not.

We need far more regulations to protect consumers from predatory corporations: banking, insurance, pharma, food (ban GMO) and get corporate money out of politics. It's just legal bribery.

OWS is theater. This is the age of instant fame through blogging, Facebook, reality shows, etc. Everyone now wants to be on the spotlight. OWS' main goal is to get themselves written and talked about. The attention they get makes them feel all warm and tingly inside, relieves some of the boredom, white middle class guilt and envy they harbor for successful Americans. Who cares if they have no leader, or if they're about too many things (many contradictory), or up to this point haven't decided if they should harass, threaten or alienate other 99% non - OWS people. Are drumming and squatting really the most effective use of their energy and the most sustainable way to bring on a new world order? It's not the point. As long as they get attention, they're going to keep doing what they're doing. Ultimately, OWS will just be another form of speech. Some people speak, some write, some vie for attention by theater.

The children already know. They hear about it from their parents and older children, the TV, internets, just like everything else. When I was in grade school, we were all about learning politics and stuff. We held our own elections for the President of the United States, right there in Jr. High. I gave a speech for my campaign 'team' candidate, who just happened to be the honorable President Jimmy Carter, [the most honest president in our lifetimes]. We had also just come out of the turmoil of the 60s and early 70s, and all of that was still in the news and talked about all the time. Kids know stuff....., whether ya like it or not.......,

Jimmy Carter was very honest. Unfortunately, he was almost as incompetent as the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. That is something that Obama can hold on to with absolute certainty, he is the most incompetent president since Buchanan.
