Did you know that the total size of the federal civilian work force reached its peak under Reagan?  It is 600k fewer than it was at the end of 1988.

It grew under every most of the recent GOP Presidents during their term.   Nixon, Reagan, GW.  All of them except GHWBush.  It shrank under Clinton, and Carter.

What's interesting about this argument is  Read More...

"Congressional Republicans are cautiously embracing President Barack Obama's proposal for shrinking the size of the federal government"

This is the same garbage we've seen for the last decade . . .

Expand government for 3 years, then in an election year pretend like you are fiscally conservative.

Damn, it sure is hard to reach a conservative. Obama is asking for the authority to streamline the support for businesses trying to export their products overseas.....and, by the way, it will also reduce costs.
03:42 PM on 01/15/2012
When the headline is:

"The reorganization would save $3 billion over 10 years and streamline services for businesses."

The savings is like when the right was trying defund planned parenthood.
02:34 PM on 01/15/2012
Why would a President who has spent the last 3 years wildly expanding the size of government suddenly ask for more power, supposedly to be used to shrink government? Two reasons....he thinks it's a good campaign strategy and he wants more power. Wake up, people, he will say anything to get what he wants.

Don't you conservatives ever consult the facts before you post? Obama has a federal work force that is 230,000 fewer than Reagan did; and, that Reagan had for a significantly smaller population. So much for your "wildly expanding the size of government".
02:40 PM on 01/15/2012
He is not expanding the government. In fact, the size of our government had grown exponentially with 'Homeland Security', and much of that will be trimmed back.

You are buying into the media hype. Research the facts.
02:03 PM on 01/15/2012
Don't you people get it. You weren't consulted because, "You don't matter". This lawless one no longer needs congress or the senate and there is nothing you are willing to do about it.

It doesn't matter what Obama does or doesn't do; or how he does or doesn't do it, the Republicans will oppose. They have one and only one consideration in mind.....to get this black man out of the White House. And, they are willing to sacrifice great damage to America to do so.
02:23 PM on 01/15/2012
People (not only Congress) are saying "No" to a lot of what O is doing. It has nothing to do with party or race....it has to do with the way he is "leading" this country, which is in the wrong direction.

I'm not sure I understand NDRC's concern about moving the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from the Commerce Department to the Department of the Interior. Even Rachel Maddow on Friday's show questioned why NOAA was under the Commerce Department to begin with, and she's a NOAA nerd. As long as they don't cut any of the functions of the department, it seems like a better fit at Interior.

Apparently the government is too large to comfortably ignore the plight of the people. Let's see: Cutting taxes stimulates the economy! Gosh darn regulations are hurting bidness! It's the government's job to help businesses and businesses' job to help the people! Separate but equal is my preferred civil rights solution! Unless of course you're "indefinitely preventatively detained without recourse to the justice system". And of course now: We need to cut the size of government by about 2,000 jobs to "help small business". In exactly what way is Obama NOT a Reagan Republican? I mean except for the fact that Reagan was more open to raising taxes and apparently had more respect for civil liberties.

Almost to a person conservatives bash Obama's deficits. But also to a person, they have not one clue as to just how Obama got these deficits. So, let's review our deficit history:

1. Bush handed Obama an in process budget with a 1.2 trillion dollar deficit.
2. The Bush budget DID NOT include the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that Bush had kept under the table.
3. Obama ordered that the wars be added to the budget, which greatly swelled the deficit.
4. Bush handed Obama an economy in free fall crashing towards a second great depression.
5. Tax revenues to the government were crashing with the economy.

BOTTOM LINE: Bush locked the Obama deficits in concrete before Obama took his hand off the bible. Then he quitely slipped away to Dallas knowing full well that Obama would be blamed for the horrible mess he had made. Thanks to Obama we are slowly recovering. 2012 will be the first year in many that the deficit wll be less than a trillion.

With conservatives the buck can be moved anywhere it suits their distorted narritive. With liberals, it stays on the desk in the Oval Office.
02:36 PM on 01/15/2012
Name a policy that the Democrats introduced in those two years that increased the deficit and by how much it raised it.

Here's what the Rs did.
1) The Bush tax cuts - according to the very conservative Heritage foundations, the Bush tax cuts increased the debt (just in the years Bush was in office by 3.5 Trillion dollars.
2) They instituted a $700 billion dollar prescription drug benefit without paying for it -- that's $700 billion EVERY TEN YEARS. They neither increased taxes or cut spending in other areas to pay for it. (They wanted the 'credit' for something that people like - but didn't want to take the heat for actually PAYING for it)
3) Two costly wars - again WITHOUT PAYING FOR THEM - and in this case - without even COUNTING THEM as costing anything.

The GOP is a bad joke.
02:30 PM on 01/15/2012
The Bush argument doesn't work any more. Do you think O is the only president who has ever taken over at a difficult time? There have been Presidents who have taken over during wars, recessions, and depressions before....and they worked to fix the problem instead of trying to blame the last president, even after being in office more than 3 years.

I don't think....I KNOW.....that no new incoming president has ever been handed a worse economy. And I also know that no incoming president has ever had every attempt to solve this mess blocked by the worst congress in our history.

I cannot prove this. But, I believe, as most American blacks believe, that this Republican obstruction is motivated by racism. Never in our history have we witnessed such a devoted effort on the part of the minority in congress to oust a president of the United States, a president who is doing one helluva good job considering what he has been up against from day one.

Since the big debt ceiling debate the Republican Party has become very unpopular with voters. Their candidates are not winning anyone over either. With less than a year before elections, is the GOP’s strategy now is to “MEND FENCES” and “MAKE NICE”? Are they going to suddenly become the MOST REASONABLE, FRIENDLY PEOPLE in the room, while trying to make president Obama look bad at the same time? Will they say it’s not them lying or pointing fingers at the president, it’s just the president doing things UNPRESIDENTIAL?
This last year has not been just a squabble among children. Real people have been hurt and real damage has been done to American lives. Republican obstructionism has hurt our country and her people and pretending that is was all just a misunderstanding and tacking on an insincere apology here and there is just not going work.
Don’t trust any sudden good behavior from republicans; it is just another way to fool you into thinking that it’s all about America, not their generous corporate buddies.
VOTE ALL REPUBLICANS OUT OF LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICES.

"many are watching to see if his actions will match up with his words."

Many are watching but no one expects any action that would reduce the extent that the Federal government tries to include itself into every aspect of our lives. If "consolidate" were replaced by "manipulate", the statement would more closely mirror the truth...

Wow real money saver 3 billion over 10 years lets break it down thats 300 million a year. To put that in terms we can grasp easily the United States on average spends 30 BILLION a year on Pizza or about 100 bucks per person for the year. So the great budget cut is going to save each person in the U.S. on average ONE DOLLAR A YEAR!
