"His most touching and resonant line, to my thinking, is "Every person in here knows personal pain... "
Oh - Come on Vicky! You feel sorry for Newt??? Newt himself is the reason for the personal pain in this case. No reason to feel sorry for him.
The reaction in S.Carolina is most likely just disbelief - but it won't last long. Republicans have seen their rising candidates crash and burn one after another. They don't WANT to believe it is happening again. It is the republican way of dealing with their dishonest politicians - just pretend it didn't happen. Just like the unnecessary Bush' war based on massive lies - republicans just close their eyes in front of all the evidence and pretend it didn't happen. What a sorry bunch...

Well they "pretended " pretty well tonight. Newt upsets Romney, Santorum fades and Paul Who? Now we have Santorum in Iowa, Romney in New Hampshire and Newt in South Carolina. And Ron Who? I guess South Carolina likes to get down in the mud with their candidates. His ex wife's interview probably won Newt the state. Guess those christian conservatives take "love the sinner, hate the sin" really seriously. Well if they wanted the dirtiest most corrupt candidate they surely got him. I still say one is as bad as the next so I'm not worrying when it doesn't matter. I'll wait until it does.

I for one am very glad and proud that newt's second wife came forth with her story of New't's behavior. Years ago when New't was speaker of the house ( and third in line to the presidency) he relentlessly called for the impeachment of President Clinton. New't loudly and vocally questioned President Clinton's " Moral Authority" to stay in office and relentlessly called for Clinton to step down while he (New't ) was also carrying on an affair...

New't was a key element in the government spending millions of dollars on Ken Starr's "SEX REPORT" that printed a million page report on the investigation of Clinton, Monica Lewenski, and the infamous "BLUE DRESS." He did everything to destroy President Clinton while he was carrying on an affair himself with Calista who is now his wife.

New't Gingrich is a hyprocrite of ethic proportions and deserves to be exposed!!!! Now he want to go around flaunting Calista in the face of all America??? What he is doing is totally desrectful to all women.

I think women are one of the groups that Newt has forfeited. Along with the blacks, latino's, unemployed, employed but in unions, children (they can't vote anyway) the elderly (he backs Paul Ryans plan to do away with SS and Medicare), people who need food stamps or help in any way, enviromentalists, anyone watching out for consumers, oh yeah he also hates the government. Now this one fools me sometimes. I keep waiting for the punch line. I hate the government therefore you should elect me to lead this hated government? My head is spinning.I wonder what math genius told him he could win with 1% of the vote. Assuming of course that even his friends don't find Newt just a tad to much, even for them.,

Great comment GoDrammie: Fanned and faved! I enjoyed reading your commentary on Newt ( the hypocrite ) Gingrich. Certainly the republican party can no longer run on the premise that they are the party of family values. The voters in South Carolina have certainly proved that they are not. Thanks for your great post.

I'm glad you remember! For those who think Gingrich went after Clinton purely on the basis his perjury, you should listen to the way he was talking about it. It was more than just about lying under oath. By this time Gingrich had already committed two affairs and was going strong in the second one.

You're right about one thing. When most people ask how you're doing, they just want to hear "Fine" so they can move along. Your very best friends and close family members care, but the rest of the world doesn't want to know about marriage troubles, financial troubles and any other private business.

I was just telling a co-worker the other day that when the boss asks "How's everything going?" he just wants to hear "Great." Unless there's a real problem at work -- something he needs to address because it's affecting productivity -- he doesn't care about your childcare issues, the dishwasher that has to be replaced, the annoying way the guy in the next cubicle chews his food, your dog's health, traffic on the way to work, etc.

It would be a nicer world, I suppose, if everybody truly cared about one another more, but that's not where we live.

That a woman must always agree with her husband in public is a concept hundreds of years old and I thought we'd gotten past it. Everyone has the right to tell the truth, and if the guy was not living up to his responsibility, you have every right to call him on it. Don't worry about the friends, fair weather friends aren't friends at all. You need some girlfriends on your side who aren't married couples who knew both of you. Is he paying now? That's all that matters.

In the end, Marianne wins because Newt will NEVER beat Obama. Indeed, he probably will not win the nomination. Newt is a piece of work, and Marianne excoriated him on national television. He might win South Carolina, but, really, who cares. He will lose to Obama when it comes time for serious politics.

Yes Marianne did unintentionally and indirectly hand SC to Newt. Those who say "it was 16 years ago and we shouldn't judge Newt". But we aren't voting on whether Newt should go to heaven or hell. We are voting for the leader of most powerful nation on earth. Character matters for a president of the US or at least it should. A history of gross hypocrisy and lying tells a lot about a person.

I understand the point that Vicki Ward makes but it is my understanding that this was NOT supposed to be televised Thursday night. When she agreed to do this interview it was her understanding that it would not be shown until after the election today. I don't know. Maybe she needed money. I'm sure Newt wouldn't help her under any circumstances. And maybe she is still galled by Newts wanting to remain married for political reasons while he still slept with his much younger staffer. She was his mistress for 6 years. That's got to hurt. What ever her reasons I hope she gets what she needs to move on. She looks tired and not at all happy. If this is her pay back I hope it works for her. And if it's for money, I hope she got a ton. Marrianne, woman to woman, SMILE.:) You got rid of this heel just in time.. You are the lucky one here. Let it go and count your blessings. You don't need to convince us that your ex has no heart. It's written all over his face and drips like acid from his words.

Love is mercurial. No one knows how long it will last. We all hope it's forever. One can espouse family values, but love, the end of it or the beginning of it, can get in the way of what we hope to be the right outcome. Frankly, sometimes shit just happens. Both parties have a choice, to live their lives looking forward, or to live with what was.

I'd really rather that Newt regret his position on abortion, but I've never been a one-issue person. He has my support.

Women inititiate divorce 70% of the time. 92% of of divorced men want equal custody of the children, but when they fight for equal custody they lose 84% of the time. Facts bear lttle resemblance to sensationalistic articles.

Your comment bears little relevance to the issue. Newt and Marianne didn't have children.Custody issues had nothing to do with this.

Those who have followed politics knew it was coming b/c Marianne Gingrich warned him several years ago in Esquire that she would take him down if he became a serious contender. The interview made her look bitter and vindictive; and the timing of the interview spoke volumes (at least to those who are hearing about this for the first time). I say that as a former Republican who wouldn't vote for Newt under any circumstances.

Correct. Obama must be getting rather weary of the lies being told about him. On the other had, Newt wouldn't know anything about lies being told about him. None have been told.

I always thought that if you did something wrong, that even though you asked God for forgiveness, you still had to try and repay that wrong by living a life that showed you had learned from your mistake. But with Gingrich, it seems you can do anything you want, no matter how bad or who it hurts, as long as you then ask for forgiveness. Then you can go back to doing what you did before.

It's certainly possible that the base of the GOP in S.C. is immune to anything bad about Newt since he gives them what they most want: a vicious attack dog to set on the President. Newt has a slimy ability to turn any legitimate comment on his characer into an attack on someone else. It's not an inconsiderable skill in this political climate.

I would not have recommended that Marianne make these comments either, both since there was nothing materially new and because it would surely put her in the rhetorical crosshairs of some very savage political folks. But once the smoke clears from South Carolina, I think the interview might have more impact than it does now. It's just another reminder that Newt has a long record of ethical, marital, and financial misbehavior...and his current smirky nastiness does not indicate that his 'repentence' and 'grace' have changed him much at all.

This is only the beginning of Newt and his "sins". His own party can't stand him. Especially the ones who were in congress with him. Nope Newt might win South Carolina. Heck he might (I doubt it ) be the Republican Nominee. But his reputation precedes him and he's not going to be able to run from it forever. Can you imagine tall, proud, young, fit, intelligent, articulate kindhearted, reasonable , the "real family values" man, Barack Obama standing on a stage with mean, nasty, not the family values man (unless you count the number of marriages and not the quality) with all his past baggage, political if not personal, short tempered, no plan, smart but not enough, Newt Gingrich. It can only help Obama when Newt comes off like the bully he is. Some will like that, most will not. Good for the base, a disaster for America.
