The president is about to need a little medicine himself.

Remember the story about the ostrich sticking his head in the sand? Got to tell you: that's me from now on. I'm too old and too weak to deal with all the selfish greed generated by corporations, due to the bought and paid for politicians. If anyone thinks this is what the Founding Fathers had in mind, they are completely wrong. All my life, I never was a quitter, but this corruption really is too much.

First: Americans are dangerously over-medicated?

Is the FDA more interested in Americans' health, safety, & well being or. . .

In the billions of dollars it receives annually from the pharmaceutical companies to approve new drugs & keep current drugs on the market?

Well there is a small scandal going on about bosses at the FDA wanting to approve unsafe cancer treatments ! The whistle-blowers are in trouble and their personal email spied on. [ http://www.medpagetoday.com/Washington-Watch/FDAGeneral/30954 ], America at it's best

The pharmaceutical buisness sector is the largest drug "cartel" in the world. You can't drive a mile in any direction in any city before you come across one of their "pushers" (Walgreens or CVS) on the street corner. They design fake illnesses like "social anxiety disorder" so that they can convince the mentally challenged in America that they need their drugs. They've got Washington by the short hairs and its past time that instead of busting the labor unions, that the 2 BIGGEST covert unions (the American Medical Association and the American Bar Association) get their chops busted for a change.

But how would the politicians make all that extra money tax free that they so love?

These subsidies to the pharmaceutical industry are just another form of crony capitalism. The competitive position of these companies are hurt by collecting these bloated profits from the government because the companies lose their competitive instincts and do not grow leaner and meaner. Other international companies that do compete without heavy subsidization then remain competitive enough to dominate the industry. These subsidies to Big Pharma are costing the tax payer billions and governments should negotiate with drug companies the way Wisconsin and the Veteran's Administration does.

I agree. It is ridiculous for these companies to advertise on TV. Some of their advertising is downright fraud.

Big pharma is the biggest scam going. They don't intend to cure anything, they just keep you sick and make their shareholders rich.
04:13 PM on 02/01/2012
There is no money in a cure. Billions to be made to treat symptoms though.

Once and for all, Barack Obama isn't Jesus Christ. He can not walk on water nor change the blacken heart of Republicans. They have to be crushed in November to realize their strategy of racism, obstructionist handed them a devastating loss in Nov. They are the party of Fred Kruger running on fumes and holding on to the obsolete Rich first priorities. In the long view, which Obama always take-we as Democrats will have a 30 year majority if we stick together.
For a party that values liberty, it's a shame you want a dicatator.

Washington is at war with the drug cartels, those who ship illegal drugs into our Country.
But they are in bed with the biggest drug pushers, those who use TV, doctors, and our government,to push their wares at obscene prices.
Mr Transparency (Obama), along with our corrupt lawmakers perpetuate their ability to rape us.
The only reason that the drugs coming from south of the border are not legal, is because we have not figured out how to control, tax and have the drug companies profit from them.

They need to keep prices up so they can pay out on the lawsuits when their new drugs turn out to be bad drugs.
The lawyers love that arrangement too.

We are sick, poor, unemployed, poisoned, sucked dry at the bank, unrepresented, lied to, our rights are being taken away, education is only for a few . . . where is the hope for our children? Mega corporations own everything, especially our government and those of other countries.

Unfortunately, the ones in charge of making any changes are the biggest part of the problem. I really doubt they'll ever do anything that will deplete the money in their wallets, and the great perks of riding the coattails of the government.

It's the same phenomenon that supports lotteries. Chances might be one in 10 million, but people still buy tickets. It is a tax on the math challenged.

Conservatives likewise threaten the same math-challenged masses with losing THEIR chance at prosperity (see Joe the Plumber) if (rational) regulations are put in place. It's sad, but they sell the country's soul believing that they are preserving the American dream.
