The real question is what type of mental illness is involved.

I believe the blame lies not only with the immature persons who exposed intimate details of this boy's personal life on social media, but American society as a whole for tolerating discrimination based on sexual orientation. I am sure this poor boy was absolutely devestated and did not believe that he could bear the public humiliation he knew was coming to him. This is sad!
01:15 PM on 02/05/2012
And the parents for not supporting him.

I think it's interesting how anyone who think's homosexuality is normal & natural on here is considered better educated , progressive , open minded , and more accepting. But anyone who doesn't for whatever the reason (religious or not) is called uneducated , hateful , fake , etc.. Now under no cicumstances do I condone bullying but isn't being cut down and called names bullying in itself? Just goes to show none of us are any better tha anyone else.

AGREED.....I ALSO THINK ITS FUNNY TO BLAME A SUICIDE ON SOMEONE ELSE!
12:08 AM on 02/04/2012
How is it funny? It was caused because of him. It's an cause and effect duh. Without a cause, there would be no affect.
Without the video there would of been no suicide in this situation... Realize what you say before you post it.

I think this is a very good comment. Just because I think that being gay is right or wrong doesn't automatically make me an idiot or uneducated. We should never use violence or name calling but voicing one's opinon should be acceptable.

Why does it have to be "right" or "wrong"? Its a lifestyle and an orientation people are born with. Like hair color. Maybe its not for you. Thats fine. Personally, I would never dye my hair red. That doesnt mean those that have red hair or that dye their hair red are "wrong". It just means their choices arent what I would choose. I dont know where people came up with this notion that they should be allowed to have an opinion on who other people should be allowed to have sex with.
08:06 AM on 02/04/2012
So you think you should get to express an opinion on someone others life? Bet you go to church every Sunday too.

I'm a victim of this. I have yet to see video but too many references to it have hounded me since my separation from my family. My home was invaded, my privacy was exposed on a video circulating on AT&T cell phones. I can't prove anything, but the comments I get ("Masturbator") and have gotten for 3 years are disturbing...and have wrecked my life...a veteran and liberal and one of the 99%!

Is it a video that you sent to someone else? Because once you do that, your privacy is at the mercy of your phone friend. If they leave their phone unattended at all, your "private" video is out there for anyone to see. High school kids have found this out the hard way. Don't send anything over the Internet that you wouldn't want the world to see.

I think the most poignant part of the interview was the sentence when Tyler says "MOM HAS BASICALLY COMPLETELY REJECTED ME" That to me is the core of this article...The non acceptance by his parents and the rejection they created is vast, and a black hole of intollerance.toward their child. And as the article mentions that the parents are very religious, they should continue to be ashamed of the way they behaved toward their child.......

I came out to my parents in a letter when I in service. I know it threw my parents for a loop. Mom started doing research about it and told her family (my aunts and grandparents). It took them awhile but they had to get over the shock and the "where did I go wrong"s. We've had our ups and downs but I always knew they loved me and I knew that wouldn't change. Not everyone has that foundation.

Sorry, the reason this poor boy committed suicide was because of his homophobic mother who couldnt accept her gay son. He was probably worried his mom and her church friends would find out about the video and she would hate him. I feel awful he was rejected by his mother, I can't even imagine not accepting my child for who he or she is. Terrible

To blame Tyler's mother is WRONG. A lot of people do things that upset their family and don't commit sucide.

It sounds to me like his roommate should be sued - what a cruel thing he did! To videotape your roommate having sex - without their consent!

so easy to say from outside the family, and after the fact. That said, our family had a different secret 'elephant in the living room', and all I can say is secrets are hurtful, and can destroy the very thing you are trying to preserve.

The real fault behind this tragic yet aviodable suicide, is the students who bullied and ridiculed and stopped beloved Tyler's ROMANCE he was experiencing.(tears) His brother and family might have assisted, but how could they stop the bullying in the dorms and the videomaking that rapidly wore away the comfort of a gay love affair? I know what COLD AND BRUTAL homophopic persons will do to a gay person in the education system, huh? It happened to me in Nursery school and throughout my school years, it happened on the street, in the park, in the Boy Scouts, etc
.Sadly sweet Tyler was a victim of the horror that still exists, against a man or woman who prefers the company of the same sex. The eonly defense one has is to rise above and run away. Suicide should NOT be an option, but the when the pain weighs too heavy, what is a poor misunsterstood gay person supposed to do to exist in the dark and frightening world. If there are any gays on the verge of suicide, maybe I can help. I rose above the terror and remain here.Thank you James for your thoughtful remembrance and be advised that the idiots in the dorm are where the true fault belongs. They caused a senseless tragedy of a good person honorable and loving.(tears)

I'm so sorry for your mistreatment, I'm sorry for all people who go through these brutalities because of others prejudices. I wish there were more I could do than to just say I'm sorry. I do say something to kids if I hear or see them picking on another child, but it just doesn't seem like enough. I'm glad you came through it, maybe scarred but better for the knowledge and how to help.

I do feel that if his mother had been more supportive he would have had a safe haven to turn to. He already had doubts because of her rejection and this video incident was compounding that fact. If you have a basic, stable support system, setbacks like the video are easier to take.

I'll never forget the tragedy of Tyler's suicide. He was a young man dealing with some major events in his life and the violation of his privacy and dignity at the hands of his roommate was clearly too much. Of course, I never knew Tyler but I can't help but wish I'd had 5 minutes with him to let him know that it DOES and WILL get better. The world is certainly a cruel place but there are some wonderful people out there and we can all learn to stand on our own, regardless of others' opinions, thoughts and actions. Giving in to others is never worth it. Never. Sadly, Tyler and the others who could no longer deal with the cruelty around them will never know that. Although I do believe they are in a far better place, they will always and forever be missed by their loved ones and the world is not as bright without them. May these sweet people rest in peace and may their families one day be able to heal.
