US Government taxes your US Postal Service 5 Billion Dollars a year....then they raise the price when they're in the red.

I get a lot of charitable solicitations and junk mail. Some of these letters are going at 5 cents. Yet First Class was just raised again. This type of mail has been delayed almost two months. Sales circulars are out of date, etc. I called the General Mail Facility and they said it was because of a power outage. BS! A few weeks later they gave the newspaper the excuse that they were trying out a new sorting system. During teh six heaviest weeks of the year? Christmas? My postla person told me what I believe is the real story. They get so much of this junk mail that they pay gobs of overtime to get it sorted out. They cut out the overtime and that's why it fell behind. Now if you have product that is that popular and you have to pay excessive overtime maybe you aren't charging enough for the service to cover its cost? The real problem though is just poor management.

While there are management issues, that's not the real problem. The real problem is that the postal service (which once was taxpayer funded, by the way) is required to operate without government subsidy but is under the control of Congress, which refuses to let the service develop a new business model to replace the outdated one it continues to operate under.

I agree with youayou and should have mentioned that since it is one of my complaints. It's either a business that operates as one or a government agency under their control but not both. Look at the nonsense about closing stations. Congress' constitutents don't want to lose their P.O. even if it only gets 50 pieces of mail.

A & B do not make C here. When I go to the Post Office I have to wait in line some tines 25 mins
as there are 15 are 20 people in line. And only three people at the desk to help you.
1. Can the Junk Mail. I get a ton of it. 2. Make the 1st class Stamp .50 cents.
Cut every ones pay by $2.00 bucks a Hr. And cut the big shots pay by 25%.
Tell the Union it is time to cut the free B.S. and get with it..
You do this and a few other things and the Post Office will be doing fine...
12:24 AM on 02/11/2012
as a teamster union member, your uneducated about unions danny boy!!., search UPS the UPS workforce is made up of teamsters., last week again reported 2nd qtr profits...whats your problem with our union?...they get us free medical?., or they get us paid vacations??., or that they get us a pension??...who else gets these things?., who else is doing such a great job for its investors???....
01:03 AM on 02/11/2012
I often had to wait in line for 1/2 hour just to pick up a package or mail left on Vacation hold, and when I did put mail on vacation hold, they never failed to deliver it anyway. If there was any other option, I would never go to the post office. If it was a privately owned company it would have gone out of business a long time ago. The postal service was started as SERVICE. the Pony Express and delivering mail to farm houses on dirt roads in a Model T Ford. They no longer provide the kind of service we should expect from them. Fire the whole bunch and start over, the management there is useless.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I believe in saving jobs. I think that if you pay a bill online, then you should pay a small fee (such as .25) that will go to the postal service so that postal workers will not lose their jobs.

Boy, that's all we need -- another fee. Plus it's totally unconstitutional.

No. Another fee to give to another bureaucrat to "lose" when it's convenient for them, right? Throw more money at it and it will hopefully stick? Tell me when that's worked, EVER? The system is BROKEN.

Regular, valid mail may be down 6 pct. But that only means junk mail will be up 6 pct to help make up for it. And judging by the increasing crap that goes in my mailbox every Tuesday (junk mail day), I already see it happening.

I honestly think most of their money is going on mail that they ruin. In the past 3 months the mail service in my area has turned to crap. 2 of my netflix movies were ruined and left in my mailbox with a shredded evelope and movie hanging out and one had been broken in half. They opened a package I was received at my mom's place and her mail person got lazy and decided to leave all of the mail inserts in a big postal box outside of her apartment's mailboxes. We both have those mailboxes that have to be opened with a key so we know the only ppl that have access to our mail is the postal dude and us.

Well, the Post Office bought this on themselves. Why would I go to a more expensive private business like FedEx or UPS to mail my package? Answer: My package will get to its destination on time and without excuses. The only great thing about the US post office is their excuses, I've heard some of the most fantastic lies in my life asking them where my mail went.
11:21 PM on 02/10/2012
Yes, and I have read some of the most fantastic lies here on the HP boards. Such as YOURS!

Ok then itsafact; Give us all the facts in this public forum. Why does any person take their mail to a more "expensive" private business to mail a package? You say the private mailers are not more "efficient" and I'm lying. So, without further debate gives us all the reason.

Well, you dont really seem to know the real truth about why they are in such money problems, you can thank the 2006 GOP congress for that!!! How many bussinesses do you know or think could do what they have to do and survive....... since 2006 they have been paying 5 BILLION a year into health funds and others... they have to pay 75 years worth in 10 years by 2016.. So its been 6 years now and thats 30 BILLION they have payed already.. So ask yourself if it wasnt for the stupid 2006 congress, would they be in this trouble? NO!! Its not fair and congress is just useing them..... plus the GOP has been trying to see that the USPS went down for years.... alot of there super rich buddies want pieces of it and if that happens a good deal of america will pay for it.... Plus did you know the USPS moves and delivers alot of your Fed-ex stuff?? You need to get all the REAL facts before you post something so stupid !!!

Fine then the post office is solvent and the reporters are lying. The lay offs are also a lie and the post office is making a nice profit. Ok then we got the real story now thanks.

Do any of you gripers, whiners and malcontents EVER stop complaining? Many of you sound like a bunch of little old ladies! If you have a job and don't make enough, get more education or another job. If you cannot do that, then we don't care. Quit your constant pity parties for yourselves.

First things first dump the Postal workers pensions and slash their pay. There will always be someone out there capable of shoving mail into boxes for 1/2 the pay. Truth is we are coming close to a day where we really do not need mail anymore. We can pay our bills online, we can email relatives instead of sending letters. We can send e-cards instead of real cards. Bottom line is the post office is nearly a relic of what life was like last century. Time to accelerate the move into the new world

Don't have a clue, do you? First, you can't dump the pensions because the workers paid into them, so it's partially their money. You can't slash their pay because they have a contract. If you're in a mail order business, as I am, you need the postal service because as you undoubtedly don't know, UPS, FedEx and the rest of the private carriers don't deliver to every address as the postal service is mandated by law to do. Get the facts before you offer up ridiculous comments.
01:09 AM on 02/11/2012
They do not deliver to every address where I live. We have apartment complexes and even groups of office buildings that they class as rural and we have to go to a bunch of mailboxes in a large group outside. They do not deliver to every door. Where I live now it is about 3 blocks to where I have to pick up my mail.

They need to get in step! Get the Post office on line too, more than it is now. Forget prepaid health insurance for retirees get them on medicare like the rest of us. Make it a real job! It is not what it use to be like everything in the US. I don't trust the internet and I still mail all my bills with STAMPS!
Where are the cute young girls delivering mail? All I see are old people
11:28 PM on 02/10/2012
Get educated before you blather. USPS employees already pay into Medicare. The US Government REQUIRES and MANDATES the prepaid health insurance. This is NOT something the USPS agrees with. And enough of your smart mouth with the remark about cute young girls. You sound like a total git.

We Already pay into medicare and have for a long, long time.... plus we pay into our retirement, which is the soundest one in the nation, and congress wants to get there hands on that also... you can thank the 2006 GOP congress for all this mess.... go study the law they passed, that should enlighten you.!! The GOP has been trying for years to get the USPS to go down.....

anyone interested in reading a [truthful] analysis of the PO. numbers read the 1st column on this website. It has a vastly different conclusion.
My opinion is ...there are major political players eager to privatize the PO. for personal gain and the American Publics Great loss.

Finally someone knows the truth..... this has been going on for years. The GOP congress in 2006 knew this would kill the USPS when they passed that stupid law...... and yes you are so right if they get there way a whole lot of the people in the USA will pay dearly for it !!

It's time for the good ole postal service employees to have a reality check...we don't get a special retirement system or all the overtime that the postal service is rife with...they should have pared down salaries and benefits at least 25 years ago...inefficient, bloated, bureaucratic monolith...does anyone else out there think that making $28 per hour plus mega bennies for standing behind a counter or driving around a little truck or car or sorting or anything else they do is fair...i make $19 a hr, have marginal benefits, work brutal days of 12-14 or longer hrs 3 or 4 days in a row (an LPN)...and you know what, i feel lucky...and I feel sympathy for the techs who work at our facility and make half or a little more doing the worst of it (lifting people, transferring people, dressing people, feeding people, diapering people, showering people--heavy nonstop on your feet all day work). I don't even know how they make it...and if you think any of us will get much for staying until retirement time, you are way more optimistic than any of us.. Cut the salaries by half, slash the benefits and then we might feel more sympathy...oh, if you don't get it already, prepare ourselves for a big government bailout funded by our tax dollars hard at work...

I agree to a point I think because tax dollars pay Govt. employees that they all including congressmen .senators, even the president shoud make minimum wage and I bet there are people that would work for that and just imagine how much money would be saved. The Govt. should not be competing with the private sector
11:17 PM on 02/10/2012
Excuse me but NO TAX dollars of YOURS or anyone else's goes to fund the USPS. Where did you get THAT Idea? The cost of stamps is what pays salaries at the USPS. Get educated.

1)People can wait till Monday to receive bills – No More Saturday!
2)re - postal worker in Texas, suspended after admitting she stole truckloads of bulk mail over (10 years) -- hmmm regardless what type of mail - isn’t that a Federal Offense ?? but was suspended – yep that builds trust with customers!
3)a few years back they had a piece on TV about postal workers scamming with workmen’s comp – they proved this guy was lying (had him on camera) and he had collected over 2 years’ worth of comp money o’ yeah they showed the guy lifting rail road ties - several that day wow that’s some back problem !! they said in the end ------ the poor postal worker who was on comp for the bad back --- they the (post office) told him to return to work or be let go ---- he returned but NEVER had to pay the money back !
4)How about a pay CUT ??? like the rest of us have ! want to keep your job take a cut
5)Here’s a big one --- what about doing something about the way some of the workers address the CUSTOMERS! With their snotty condescending attitudes
6)Prosecute workers shown on video (Post Office Videos) STEALING cards sent in the mail that they think might have money in them!
There are many options for the postal service – they just want to whine and cry and continue to ride on the coat tails of
