this is being reported as surprising?

that people voted for obama because he was black?

sure, some people voted for him because they liked him, but its more than common knowledge (to almost everyone, and certainly everyone with a brain) that many people voted for obama BECAUSE he was black.

and thats not even a bad thing necessarily (in the abstract)

in fact, if there were two  Read More...

If he really said that and meant it then his views are not worth reporting... Clearly Obama was the best candidate. The majority of right thinking Americans are never wrong....

This is news? My best friend, who is black, and a co-worker, who is also black, said the same thing. Anyone else who thought otherwise was deluded. Btw, I voted for him and I am white and supposedly from the wrong age demographic.

Better than saying "I voted for him because he was the best qualified candidate". Now THAT would be a really stupid thing to say.

Of course we did! We were tired of having to choose between two wrinkled old white men. The outcome proved that Blacks were not the only group to feel that way.

H-E-L-L-O! Whites have been doing it for decades; and this is news? the only real news is a supposed intelligent man like Samuel L. Jackson would make an ignorant statement like that, and this is a Morehouse grad? It is better to be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Why do we tend to vote "D" despite the fact that the GOP was key in passing Civil Rights laws?

Two words: Southern Strategy.
09:28 AM on 02/14/2012
So what. Ancient history. They certainly don't care about civil rights now. For them corporations are the new civilians.

Hold on Fact check the "Southern Strategy" was merely Nixon's support for Tariffs that protected Southern Industry and Farming, not loving up to the Klan. The Dixiecrats when that election was over went back to the Democrat party. Wallace was even reelected Gov of Alabama as a Democrat. Nixon was a Civil Rights SUPPORTER.
How many more years does the Democrat party have to promise prosperity to the African American community and not delivery before black voters call them on their BS? You are being played by the Democrats.

Reality check: that is not how it played out. Blacks left the party in droves for a reason, my friend. And it had nothing to do with farming.

No, the southern strategy referred to here was not about tariffs but about Lee Atwater's political strategy to use race to peel off white southern voters.

You all do realize that Obama won an election with the largest voter turnout in US history. You really think it was just because Black people voted?

Perhaps we should look at the fact that Obama inspired a ton of people to vote -- for and against.

Obama did better with the white vote than any Democrat since Bill Clinton's first election in 1992. And he tied Clintons' numbers for that year.

Obama could not have been elected on the black vote, with blacks making up 12 to 14 percent of the population.

I voted for Barack because he was black. Cause that’s why other folks vote for other people — because they look like them,"

What a sad statement. I voted as a white woman for POTUS Obama because he was the best chance for us as US citizens to get what we needed. I will vote for him again as a woman because he will defend my rights and those of my gender in the fight for equality.

All the while by trampling the constitution and the religious rights of everyone else. Thats a nice entitlement mentality. I can have an abortion of I want to it's my right ? 9 months later they call you a murderer. Women's rights are a bit overstated. No one should pay for your mistakes or your birth control. Pay for your own , do what you want but don't expect the taxpayer to foot your bill.

I voted for Obama because he presented himself as an intelligent human being whose political views more closely resembled my views.

His election demonstrated to the world the true feelings of most Americans.

Unfortunately, to their shame, Republicans are demonstrating to the world the ongoing prejudice of the few.

well said. I think when people say someone voted for him soley based on his colr that they dismiss the qualities you mentioned that made him a viable candidate to lead the nation.

Too many folks are looking for the simplistic, perhaps to mask their own prejudices...

Apov

Obama said a lot of nice things when he was on the campaign trail. Too bad they were all lies and worthless promises.

Then, with his state of the union speech in 2011, Obama again made many worthless promises...which he repeated in his 2012 speech.

I'll not pay to see any movies that you're in because you're S-T-U-P-I-D. The black thing doesn't matter but the stupid thing does. It's a shame that someone can be so ignorant and basic that their mind cannot comprehend important issues. Samuel L. Jackson is an embarassment to human beings. He is a prime example of why black society lags behind. Don't look to him for leadership because he offers none.

I dare you to educate yourself! ..but you won't....you will remain uneducated (check out college/university websites for info if you are interested).
Samuel Jackson is a success. He is a perfect example of excellence of mind and a master of his craft. Much more successful than you will ever be! You are just a simple minded racist. Prolly trailerpark /=}
