- "John Fairfax enjoyed many other adventures, including a trip to the Amazon jungle and a stint as a pirate."

Arrrgh that sounds like fun. Rowing from SF to Australia for a year...eating 8 lbs of speared fish along the way?

Sounds like my kind of guy.

Ditto. As a man of The Man Who Skied Down Everest, Thor Heyerdahl, and other adventurers, I can't believe I never heard of John Fairfax until I read his obituary.

People can say whatever they want about Mr. Fairfax, just don't say he didn't live one helluva life.

It's not important how he died-but what is important is that he Lived his Life! That he did-and then some!! RIP.

I'm commenting from somewhere in the middle of the Kalahari. I laugh at death daily. I met John in 1994 in Tibet. We had beer and talked about cars.
Why people go to work every day and suck on cubicles is beyond anything I can fathom. If you're reading this it is no doubt from a hole in your heart.

Get out...

'At 9, he settled a dispute with a pistol. At 13, he lit out for the Amazon jungle.

At 20, he attempted suicide-by-jaguar. Afterward he was apprenticed to a pirate. To please his mother, who did not take kindly to his being a pirate, he briefly managed a mink farm, one of the few truly dull entries on his otherwise crackling résumé, which lately included a career as a professional gambler.'

Wow! What a résumé!

Are they all leaving us? The ones who had courage, vision, laughed at death and didn't lay their heads down until the last drop was drained from the bottle and the day.

No longer a bubble on the sea, you have merged into great ocean of God's universe now brave wanderer. Thank you for showing us what is possible.

HP is reporting this story about 1000 years to late. The first person to sail the Atlantic was Erik the Red .... and he did it in a pedal boat that looked like a dragon.

First, Erik didn't do it alone. Second, he didn't row it.
