"This time around Mr. Boehner and everyone else should understand"

Ha! Expecting any modern Republican to understand (or more importantly to accept) reality is like expecting your pet turtle to understand quantum physics.

Yes, our dear author is deeply confused. He seems to fail to understand that the Republicans WANT gas prices to go out of control, thus harming our economic recovery. They care only for their own claims to power and not one whit for the good of our country.

The strategic reserve is for an emergency (like a war). Using it to modulate oil prices (which will swing back in time anyway) isn't its purpose. Temporary higher prices will encourage green energy and conservation by reminding people that energy can get expensive. I only drive my Suburban when I really have to.

I keep hearing about how more oil will just make everything better!

Iran will shut up, gas prices will fall to $2.50 a gallon, universal peace and harmony will finally come to the world, dogs and cats will sing Kumbaya.

The sad fact is that no oil comapny on the planet wants LOWER oil prices! They will fight any administration, Dem. or Rep., tooth and nail if anyone rocked their applecart. Increace availablity or production, and whether its a natural disaster, Middle Eastern scare, or the summer hoilday season- they will find the excuse to keep those prices high.

Don't you think that because the game is rigged anyway, we should wean ourseves from the teat of big oil?

US domestic oil production is currently higher then at any point since 2003.
It fell each and every year from 1999 through 2008, climbed in 2009, 2010 & 2011.
But for some reason they claim Pres Obama is blocking oil production.

The speculators and distributors are the ones that have their fingers around the people's throat, not Obama. Great link!

We knew 40 years ago that the supply of oil was becoming harder to find (in some cases), harder to drill and increasingly more subject to political disruptions and regulation.

Yet the government has done all it can to ignore the problem and/or keep the price of oil artificially low.

As demand increases and supply decreases, the market will dictate that the price must rise. People will conserve, find more supplies or alternatives.

The government, by intervening, distorts the market economy, benefits a few at the cost of many and leads to even more problems (the squandering of money on bad loans, inefficient subsidies, the missing $20 billion payout from the Gulf Oil Spill, the list goes on.).

Two things: Americans do not have a right to cheap energy, but should be (but are not) free to pursue other choices and alternatives and as a country, we should have know better 40 years ago. The administration has loaned Brazil money for off shore drilling but has banned America from doing so is one example.

It is increasingly apparent that Obama is manipulating the economy in many ways to gain and consolidate his power and pay off his supporters. Nothing new of course, as government intervention invariably leads to government corruption and pork barrel.

Wall St oil speculators are running up the price of oil, to defeat President Obama, in November. They know that the corporate news media, will incorrectly tarnish the President, with blame, for this.
The GOP, and Wall St, don't care how much pain this causes Americans- they would rather sink the economy, than allow the President to be re-elected.

This is a real no brainer. What's a stockpile for? Hey, the government can buy low and sell high, just like the speculators. Do it.

It was really funny what happened the last time Obama released oil from the strategic reserve: the oil released supplied oil for the US equivalent to less than two days of use, and then his rich Wall Street buds made bank by selling that oil back to the US a few weeks later at even higher prices.

Hilarious.

"Oil prices are set by commodities traders who buy and sell futures contracts on the commodities exchanges. These are agreements to buy or sell oil at a specific date in the future at a specific price. Commodities traders can create a self-fulfilling prophecy by bidding up oil futures prices. Once this starts, it can create an asset bubble. Unfortunately, the one who pays for this bubble is you!"

Somehow I don't think tapping into the reserves will help gas prices in the long term
What president Democrat or Republican can control the speculators and the commodities market?

I don't know all the intricacies of this issue--I'd just like to be able to visit grandchild and go to the doctor, in different cities, on different days, ans still have some food for the week. I bet I'm not the only one who could use some help here, Mr.President.

This president is asleep at the switch, he does nothing to give releif to the American people while giving huge resources away to the green energy debacle. Green energy is the future but only after we do some more research and developement, but we are not there yet. In the meantime projects like the keystone pipeline would help improve our situtation even if only a little, but keeping it bottled up will only make things worse even if only a little. What is his agenda? It certainly isn't the economy that is energy driven, or the American people's best interests.

US domestic oil production was up in 2009, 2010, and 2011. 2011 was the highest production year since 2003.
It dropped each and every year from 1999 through 2008.
