Horses are magnificently beautiful animals.

They are a pleasure to be around.

I wish I could afford to board and care for all of those colts, or fillies.

P.S. I lost my beautiful horse Lucy two years ago. I still miss her. She followed me around just like a dog. My Newfoundland dog Hannah, and my horse Lucy loved to run with each other in the pasture. It was such a pleasure to watch them play together.

Animals can be such a comfort.
They truly enrich ones life.

Good article and I'm glad whenever animals are saved from brutality and idiots but "baby horses"? They are foals, or more specifically, fillies and colts. Can we eliminate the fuzzy-speak and allow the story to stand on its own merit please?

Unfortunately, not everyone is as 'in the know' as you are. In most places, the term, "Colt," is used to describe a sexually immature young horse of either sex, interchanging with, "Foal," fairly often. Incorrect? Yes. Common usage? Yes, again. You're better off trying to get, "Irregardless," out of the dictionary. ;-)

Most any dictionary will describe a foal as a horse of less than a year in age. There is still no reason to dumb it down just because the word is often misused or because people don't know any better. What's next; a story about a kitty-cat with a bunny-rabbit in its tum-tum?

Don't breed or buy while homeless animals die!
11:29 PM on 02/23/2012
Since I only rescue dogs and cats, i've never given much thought to the plight of horses until I started watching Animal Cops Houston where the SPCA rescues thousands of abused and neglected horses each year. Just watched an episode this morning in which a horse that was 300 pounds underweight and had a halter growing several inches deep into his face was being vigorously ridden by his owner. The cruelty investigators said that the pain this horse was in had to be unimaginable. So now I know that humans don't stop at torturing cats and dogs, they also do it to animals that are a hell of a lot bigger than they are. Evil knows no bounds.

I am an avid animal lover and cannot believe that in this country we are considering horse slaughter once again! It is a dirty little secret which some want to revise again! So we can send our beautiful horses to Europe and Japan for their palates? Does our shameful behaviors know no bounds? No, I am not a meat eater.

I am an avid animal rescuer and I know for a fact that cruelty in this country runs rampant. And I would eat meat if animals were treated humanely, but they aren't, so i don't. Fanned you for caring.

So happy that these babies have a chance at health and happiness. They have suffered so much....glad there are people who care and try to do what they can for the innocent and at the mercy of humans for kindness...

I just hope they CAREFULLY screen the potential adopters of these young horses... They certainly don't need any more abuse or neglect.

I love horses and I am thankful they were rescued!

some people really have it wrong....cattle are cattle...horses like dogs are intelligent animals to be used in some instances to benefit man not to be starved and mistreated. the breeding of horses should be controlled by some animal agency ensuring that the owners are financially able to raise those foals. nobody has the " right " to starve animals because they can usually stating that this is a free country.

Cattle should not be starved and mistreated either. Your perspective of intelligence is a bit off and intelligence should not be the reason to avoid neglect and abuse.

A local large animal rescue in our area has the Army National Guard providing free vet medical care for its rescue animals. This is an organization whose net worth is over 2 million dollars. I think this is ridiculous and the Army should be ashamed of themselves. They have soliders whose families are in dire straits and could be using that free vet care rather then this greedy rescue group who will seize anything from anyone, legally or illegally, as long as it makes them headlines.
11:03 PM on 02/23/2012
Good rescue management, particularly of large animals like horses, involves not spending money for services or goods if they can be donated or discounted. In fact, that is how well managed families and businesses usually run. Saving horses can be expensive, and precious resources can serve far many horses when they are used prudently. It takes more than love to heal these magnificent animals, but love is a good start.
01:15 PM on 02/24/2012
The woman who runs the organization is a vet. She puts in two hours a day, twice a week and does not tend to the medical needs of any of the animals but collects a $56,000 a year salary. I am not labeling every rescue group, I am specifically talking about one.
11:48 PM on 03/15/2012
I completely agree with what you are saying, but in a time of war, I think the Army would best be served by helping their own soliders families rather then an organization with $2 mil in the bank.
