Yes another disastrous year for Hollywood. If they keep making winners like The Artist, they will be finding new ideas in the unemployment lines.

Because the Academy does not take That Kind of Film seriously.

I quit watching the Oscars the year they shut out Steven Spielberg for "The Colour Purple".

And Ron Howard was robbed -- robbed, I tell you!-- for not getting Best Director for "Apollo 13". Seriously -- he made an edge-of-your-seat film where you knew what the ending was!

A lot of time quality is overlooked due to politics or personalities.

Because Harry Potter wasn't made in America? Last time I checked, all the best films were American made...

I admit to not being up to speed on these things, but how does "The Artist" win Best Picture and not win either "Best Original" or "Best Adapted"?
It seems that if it is the best, it should be the best in it's catagory. Again, it may simply be that I haven't keep up to speed on this stuff.

Bravo to all especially Meryl Streep who is the ultimate class act.

The "In Memorium" (my favorite part of the Oscars) was TERRIBLE last night.

I quit after that.

This was an old show for old people, and most old people didn't care for the show. Billy Crystal in stuck in the 80's but looks in his hundreds, the "Academy" has no idea how to make a show interesting and there's no participation of the younger generations.

If so, why?

If you didn't watch it, how do you know the specifics?

I did; I generally look forward to see the best of what the industry has to offer. I found this year disappointing. The Golden Globes seems to be more in tune with the times.

Let's see. Last years best pic was about the English, this year it was the French influence. Maybe Spain next year? Thank heavens Moneyball, The Help and The Decendants were at least in consideration. Come on America with all your war and superhero stories. CGI does not rule.

the best picture of them all this year was the Iranian movie..The Separation, which basically showed the insanity of theocracy and the effects it has on people. I now have to question how such a movie could have been made in the nation our government and others have demonized for 60 years...something just doesn't add up....this movie was a strong argument against radical religious fanatics and Sharia law...

In my opinion I was somewhat surprised that "Paradise Lost" was not picked for "Best Documentary Feature" after watching all of them.

While I can clap my hands at human achievement in spite of overcoming enormous odds, the human side of watching our justice system destroy the most productive years of a young persons life to live in the most brutal living environment there is, fearful of getting stabbed any minute of your life for 18 years, to be finally set free when DNA evidence claims their innocence should of easily walked away with it. It was one of the most powerful & emotional filled film I have ever watched in over 50 years of my life.

The fact they did not get the Oscar speaks volumes about the disconnect our society has to the needs of human nature held captive by the culture of empire.

I voted for Ms. Streep for the SAG Award and was happy for Ms. Davis, but disappointed Streep didn't win.

Had this been Streep's film debut, she's have had the award in the bag. People have grown to take her for granted.

I'm glad political correctness or sentimentality didn't rob her of a much-deserved award.

Could not agree more!
How do you give an oscar to someone who doesn't even speak in the film? Ridiculous.
Either Oldman or Brad Pitt should've won. Pitt was stellar in Money Ball.

you don't seem to really understand the nature of acting.

if you can get your point across WITHOUT words, it's much more difficult to do so.

holly hunter didn't speak in "the piano,"  yet she too won an oscar for her incredibly powerful performance.

that's the beauty of art.  expression can be achieved in an endless variety of ways.

I watched Thatcher long enough to realize as a big fan of Meryl Streep she'd take the Oscar hands down, having done such a magnificent job of reminding me of who she was portraying,

It's then I walked out of the theater 30 minutes into the film, reminded so clearly of Thatcher's history of her role in facilitating the release of Pinochet-a wanted man under warrant as a known brutal dictator & murderer of his own people to be set free denying the Chilean people of ever seeing justice by the International & Spanish High Court.

I couldn't even step into the theater because of her (Thatcher's) horrible history. Odd thing is, I can see a film like Downfall without issue. I think it's because Thatcher lives in my memory, she is very much a living figure, and not quite a figure out of history for me.

This movie was about Thatcher's dementia than her right wing views...frankly, it was a boring disappointment...Streep did not deserve that award, but like she said..."whatever"..
