Applying for a warrant? That would mean that someone in the ministry would make sure that the folks they are raiding would know they are coming. Either the Target would be gone or ambushes would be set up. So much for OPSEC.

Heart of Darkness

“...We can declare victory now. But there’s one thing we cannot do, and that is change history, because Afghanistan has never changed since they’ve been existing.”

The epitaph of our Sisyphean decade of two agonizing wars was written last year by then-Secretary of Defense Bob Gates: “Any future defense secretary who advises the president to send a big American land army into Asia, or into the Middle East or Africa, should have his head examined.”

So simple, first we do kick the corrupt Karzai and his cronies out of power so get a gov Afghans wants, assuring them of a good governance.
Second, we ask their people to vote if they want us to keep on their country so we may die for some good reasons, like being wanted there.
Third, we demand new volunteers to train them, as a popular milicia, figthing for their new and better country.
Just some basic ETERNAL common sense.

1.We put corrupt Karzai there for a reason he's corrupt.
2.No need to vote they don't want us there if they did we would have been more successful in this 11 year debacle.
3.They liked their country the way it was and will be more apt to fight us then anyone else.

The Taliban will be back in power within a year of U.S. withdrawal and Karzai will be dead or in exile counting his cash.

It's all a waste of life , money and time. Nothing has or will change in Afghanistan. What can our mission be other than financial reward for whoever really calls the shots. America is a safer place now that we have been at war for all these years? No, so the truth is: we want war, neither one of these two wars was necessary. What else is there to say-over and over again, we are at the mercy of the War Machine. Next death trap- Iran. The war hawks are foaming at the mouth.

The Taliban is the Political and Military branch of the Pashtun tribe, the largest tribe in the world. They have never been defeated and we won't be the first to do it. They will be back ruling their tribal lands long after we are gone.

For thirty years the British Army fought a terrorist insurgency in Northern Ireland under far stricter rules of engagement than US troops face today in Afghanistan. Times have changed, back then the men detonating the IEDs, sniping and ambushing were celebrated in America, given asylum, political support, weapons, money and were hailed as ‘freedom fighters’ … Americans don’t seem as keen on ‘asymmetrical’ warfare as they once were …

AFGHANISTAN NEOCOLONY OF AMERICAN EMPIRE?

Do ordinary Americans have commonsense, political maturity, moral integrity? Let's hope. Forget euphemism: "defending freedom + democracy". Afghanistan under corrupt US puppet government ruling Kabul is neocolonial appendage of global American Empire.

What's neocolony? (quasi-colony?)
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Neo-colony
[policy whereby major power uses economic + political means to perpetuate or extend its influence over underdeveloped nations or areas.]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neocolonialism
[practice of using capitalism, globalization, and cultural forces to control a country (usually former European colonies in Africa or Asia) in lieu of direct military or political control.]

"That would help seal agreement on strategic pact with Karzai's government for longterm US presence in Afghanistan beyond 2014 deadline for most NATO combat forces to withdraw, allowing advisers and possibly some special forces to stay on."
"Obama government was discussing options with Afghans including warrant-based approach or possibly allowing Afghan judges to review raids before they took place."

That's textbook casestudy of extraterritorial extrajudicial neocolonial rule. Americans can understand it by imagining KGB + Mossad telling Washington + all Americans they want to setup shop in US, guaranteed by treaty, and dispatch their commandos to roam in America anywhere anytime, kidnap + shoot anyone they label "terrist" !!!

Afghan people (all 30million) wouldn't accept such onerous neocolonial "SOFA" treaty terms, same as Iraqis refused. America in 21st century isn't the empire it used to be in 20th century. The sun is setting on Empire Americanus.

All "rare earth" elements. Afghanistan has been surveyed and estimated to have deposits of rare earth elements in trillions of dollars worth.

Endless occupation of Afghanistan, for "democracy"? "There's method to the madness", as Shakespeare said.

This is true, but at the same time lithium can be extracted from the Ocean at far less of a cost. In fact most of the trillions of dollars of minerals would cost more to extract than they can be sold for. That could change someday, but not now and we will bankrupt ourselves before it happens.

I really don't blame Karzai for attempting to hamstring military operations by outsiders. After we finally leave, it will be clear to all that he made a deal with the Taliban and other Tribal factions months, perhaps years ago to partition Afghanistan into effective spheres of influence.

Karzai will then decide whether he and his family and inner circle can live off continued skimming of the international NGOs who still want to operate in country and help the average Afghan citizen (allowing for some significant amount of "protection money" for the Taliban and other Tribal rulers), or that he's too exposed when the Western forces depart and must "settle for" comfortable exile with money already skimmed to date.

The country has been partitioned for the last 11 years. He may think he cut a deal but the only thing cut will be his head from his kneck once U.S. forces leave.

Dubya demands that the Taliban hand over Osama, within days of 9/11. The Taliban asks for proof before handing him over (just like any sane government would do when it was widely reported that all of the alleged 9/11 terrorists were Saudis). Dubya says, "If you're not with us, you're against us. If you're harbouring terrorists, well, shock-and-awe here we come. And so it began...
