For some things there can be no understanding or forgiveness. This kind of brutality and cruelty to animals is one of them. The owners of the dogs and the people who bet on the fights should be subject to heavy fines and at least some time in jail. The more jail time the better..

Dozens of rescued dogs to be put down. Kinda takes the rescue out of the equation doesn't it?

This is so incredibly sad. The people who are responsible for the horrible treatment of these dogs should be the ones to suffer. I can't understand what type of person you have to be to treat a poor defenseless animal this way. At least these poor babies will be humanely put out of their misery but they deserved much better than this, it's heartbreaking.

Let me describe the type of person who abuses animals: inferior. They were taught that empathy and compassion have no value. Fighting dogs represent nothing more and a way to make money, and since they are uneducated and most likely talentless as well, they bottom-feed their way through life to survive. They are cowardly, living in fear because they are unable to "afford" a basic set of decent human morals or values, which gives people dignity and value to society, They know their worth, and act accordingly. Sadly, animals, children, friends, partners.. anything that crosses their path that can be exploited will be exploited, used, or abused. Hope that helps to explain.

This is nothing new.Its sad but they put down fighthing pit bulls in big American cities too.On the old Animal Cop shows they rounded up pits and had to put many down coz they can't be adopted out.
10:16 AM on 04/04/2012
They can be adopted out if they have the right resources. The Vick dogs are adopted out and are doing wonderful and many are therapy dogs. As well as other dogs from other fighting rings.

I don't know much about the Phillipines, but one reason that these dogs will die is that they may not have the facilities and/or funds to house and rehabilitate the dogs. It is really sad, and it's horrible that these people have been abusing dogs by running dogfighting rings.
09:14 AM on 04/04/2012
those are not pitbulls... the media is too lax in their reporting.... different regions of the world use different types of fighting dogs. pitbulls are descended from English fighting dogs... those dogs in those pictures are not pitbulls.

What are they? Also, what is a labradoodle?
01:13 PM on 04/04/2012
can't tell - but they could be a Tosa mix. I have no idea what a labradoodle is.
08:01 PM on 04/04/2012
A labradoodle is a Lab Poodle Mix.

And I cant say if these are Pit Bulls exactly since there are different Types of Pit Bulls. But alot of ''mean looking'' dogs are always mistaken for pits.

This is very sad. The dogs are not at fault but they have to pay the price for very bad owners. I worked at the local shelter and I out dow around 2200 dogs it tore my heart every time I did it. I had to leave could not do it anymore. I was killing innocent animals. I hope they forgive me.

I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to work at the shelter. If those animals had had responsible owners, they would not have been in the shelter. Keep that in mind.

Your post, and this article are reasons that everyone who loves animals needs to advocate for them.

This is horrible....I much rather see the dogs rescued but from what I am reading, it is probably best to put the dogs out of misery and not have to live the life of being abused!!! Sick Sick people in this world!!!

I love dogs but once they have been used to fight, they're never a safe pet. Putting them down is the most humane thing to do. By their own admission, theere have no rehabilitation in place for them and the audacity of them being sold back to the very people who abused them in the first place. They need to go humanely to the Big Kennel in the Sky where they'll never suffer at the hands of abusers again.

BS Read about the wonderful work done by "Best Friends" on many of the Pits rescued from Michael Vicks fighting ring.

These dogs will always be a potential liability to anyone who adopts them. Even after rehabilitation, these dogs could easily be triggered into aggression by some unsuspecting victim. The most humane thing we could do for them is euthanization
08:53 AM on 04/04/2012
It depends on where this takes place. The Phillipines probably don't have a program in order to deal with this.
Also, not many of the Micheal Vick dogs were even able to be rehabilitated, many were put down.
The process takes a very long time and a Pit Bull that is aggressive cant just sit around waiting for its turn.

Its horrible what these animals go through I own a Pit Bull and a Stafford shire terrier (a type of Pit Bull) and they are more like cats than a dog. But any dog can be turned into monsters no matter the breed.

There is an episode of Animal Cops, I'm not sure what city, but it shows what an abused Pitt Bull is capable of. Not even a kennel could contain them and they did what they were trained to do and attacked the dog in the neighboring kennel.

I really don't understand your assessment of my reply. I re-read what I posted and didn't see anything that was giving a thumbs up to abusers. I'm sorry you see me as condoning what they do to defenseless creatures. But, that's your choice. I know I wouldn't want one of them around my child because who knows what might trigger an agression? I'm still puzzled by your reply. You know, you're a little strange.

I think that if these poor animals HAVE to be put down, then the monsters that beat, starved, and abused these poor animals to make the fighters should also be put down for good as well!! These are innocent animals only doing what they were beatin into submission to do. They do NOT know any better, but their owners sure do!!! I say put the owners to death, before you put the poor innocent animals to death. And i'm sorry, unlike humans, dogs can be rehabilitated if givin a fair chance. I say make the owners of these poor animals pay for their rehabilitation, even if it costs the owners every dime, and physical possesion they have! And also make the monsters who bet on these poor dogs pay for the dogs rehabilitation also! If the monsters have the money to bet on dog fights, then they have the money to pay for the poor dogs rehabilitation too!!!!!!

It's getting harder and harder NOT to hate these Asian countries for their treatment of animals - ESPECIALLY dogs! If they are not eating them they are acting like outright cave people and treating them like this!!!

Chinese medicine is responsible for many endangered large animals and some very recent extinctions and the treatment of animals in many Southeast Asian markets is appalling; however, the US is by no means without major sin.

Don't forget that we also have dog (Michael Vick) and cock fighting, hunting ranches where you can shoot birds coming out of a chute (as our VP Dick Cheney did) or shoot drugged exotic and endangered wildlife ( http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2011/06/captive_hunt_undercover_investigation_animal_planet_062111.html ), have animal killing contests, and shoot wildlife from planes and helicopters.

We also have massive puppy mills where dogs live in wired floored cages and never see sunlight, have cruel and super polluting factory farms for cows, pigs, turkeys, and chickens, harm animals in labs by testing harmful chemicals on their skin and eyes or by inducing cancer, and so on. Each year, according to the ASPCA, we abandon around 5-7 MILLION pets to animal shelters. MOST of those "pets" are killed (about 3-4 million).

Yes, Tsalco, I am VERY AWARE of ALL of that. As are many readers of HuffPo. My comment is addressing this particular incidence as a `camel that getting TOO MUCH of the same straw on its' back'. In other words - HUMANS, in general, SUCK when it comes to showing compassion and respect for other creatures.
