Life goes by too fast when you're standing still
12:27 PM on 04/10/2012
Back in the "good ol' days" momma stayed home to raise the kids because the family could afford to live off dad's blue-collar wages. She took pride in her family, reading to her kids, teaching them about the world and getting them ready for school. Now, that same family cannot afford to live off dad's wages because we have called him "union scum" and sent his job overseas, so dad has a miserable job, now, and the family cannot survive on his wagws, even in a teeny apt in a bad part of town. So momma has to go to work when baby is 6 weeks old, just to put food on the table. So momma does not have the day to be with her little kids and raise them, we have to shove the kids in day care and preschool, where they are rasied by employees making $8/hr, since we devalue child care and preschool education so much. So do we try to rasie middle-class wages so parents can afford to stay home with them when they are little, getting rid of the need for preschools? There is no good answer...

Both my Mom and Dad worked. When my brothers and I went to Elementary School, we knew our numbers, our letters, and basic reading. We knew how to behave and interact with other children. Go figuire?

What exactly is an uber-left professor? What does a professor teach that makes you label them uber-left? What control and influence do Progressives have on education? Not looking for a snarky retort just looking for a well thought out answer to these questions.

When The wife and I where kids there was no such thing as pre school and we did just fine. I had two sisters who taught me some writing and spelling. We always had other kids to play with and we learned to get along together even if we did not really like each other. Ahhhh, the good old days, where did they go.

They left with the economy.

Both parents work.

School age siblings are in after school programs.

For some there are no "other kids" to play with.

Kids these days don't even know how to play without a video game or computer.

I expect this article is writen by a progressive plant (read Obamaite) who has wanted the fed gov't to completely take over daycare (now called pre-school ed) for decades. Progressives already control or influence most of primary and secondary ed in the US, and certainly don't forget all the uber-left college profs in the US. With ed and health care controlled by the leftist gov't, you'll get the cradle-to-grave gov't control you've been asking for.

There is a difference between daycare and pre-school.

I wouldn't expect a conservative to grasp the difference since most consider all K-12 public education as daycare.

It's a sad state of affairs when it comes to preschools. I live in L.A. and there are almost no public preschools unless you child has a disability. The ones that are available are so overcrowded its unbelievable. Unfortunately, if you want to attend preschool, you are left looking at private schools. And the private schools are well aware of the crisis so they charge college level tuition fees to attend. 15,000 dollars a year to learn the ABC's? It's mind boggling to me.

My daughter was very fortunate to attend a very small (8 kids) private pre-school run by a woman with a teaching credential and a degree in early childhood development. It was not cheap, and obviously, no public subsidy, but worth every cent. We waited until our later 30's, when we were financially secure, before considering parenthood. Not preaching, just saying what worked, and is still working well for our family 20 + years later.

Command of the English language and having SMART PARENTS really helps!!!!!My grandchildren have parents that both graduated from college and it seems to help tremendously, because, they make their children do chores and homework every evening.....this is just one step in the big picture of education, but IT is one of the BIG ONES!!!!
11:27 AM on 04/10/2012
I am all for pre school learning for children but how many times can we expect the taxpayers to fund these programs when they have their own children to take care of and provide for.
01:25 PM on 04/10/2012
All Day Kindergarten is a big expense for most cities, so, pre school will really put these cities under even more!!!!!....Forget it....not really feasible!!!

Education for all children pays off for everyone. We are investing in the future earnings potential and tax revenue generating capacity of future generations. It's the same as paying for infrastructure or fire, police and military. Everyone benefits. That is why those with no children or grown children still pay.
03:44 PM on 04/10/2012
You are wrong. We should not be paying for the education of illegals and pre school is something that parents have to pay for it should not be part of the school system. School starts with kindergarten and that is the way it is.
10:57 AM on 04/10/2012
Ever since the federal government got involved in our education system, our education system has gone downhill. All you need to do is look at when the Department of Education started, and you can see a system that has gotten progressively worse every year, with our elected officials telling us we need to throw more money at it. We were number 3 in the world back in the sixties, and now what are we, number 17? I'm not the smartest guy, but I did the regular half day kindergarten (no pre-school BS), went through public schools that were all locally funded, locally controlled, and had parents who gave a damn. I went on to college and even received my MBA. I paid for it myself since my parents were not rich. I worked full time and went to school at night and on the weekends. Now we throw tons of money at our education system, and what students do go to college are getting degrees in basket weaving and middle eastern studies. They then wonder why they don't have a job to pay off their student loans. Why is it that private schools (and Charter) do so well on less money than public schools do? If you can answer that, then you will solve the education problem in this country. One more time, the federal government can’t run crap, so having the feds try and run the education system by throwing more money at it is not the answer.

The reason we went from 3rd to 17th is because other countries are out spending us in education. If you look at the countries that do well, they all have strong national level spending. In the U.S. we have a hodgepodge funding of schools where wealthy districts with the lowest need of resources receive the most.

Liberals answer is to take your children even earlier to indoctrinate them.
Maybe 1 or 2 years old? Allow the govt to work their "magic" with the nations tax dollars.

They haven't figured out yet, the more money you throw at this problem the worse things get in school.

Seems the only ones profiting are the teachers unions

Eliminate health care for the masses, eliminate education for the masses, eliminate government environmental rules, eliminate banking and financial rules and regulations, eliminate federal safety rules, eliminate the right to sue a company for defective products, eliminate any form of gun control rules, eliminate taxes for the top 1%, at least, Establish fundamentalist Christianity as the state religion.

Actually Somalia was taken over by a corrupt govt, it didn't happen because the people couldn't take care of themselves. The leaders destroyed all the things you just mentioned above and are still doing it today, now they have a complete breakdown in govt because everyone is stealing from the top officals all the way down.
Perfect example of pure government corruption....

Next nation this may happen to is Greece, if they don't start to give that nation back to the people and make them responsible for it's well being, there will be a complete govt breakdown and lawlessness which will errode that nation as well.

Thanks for the example it was perfect!

We have been trying the pre-school panacea for years and kids test scores and behavior has continued to plummit - don't know the answer but more money on this doesn't seem to work.
10:51 AM on 04/10/2012
I don't know, in my son's kinder class it's pretty clear who went to preschool and who didn't. These days, kinder is really what 1st grade was when I was in school. It does seem to work here.

But a lot of people ignore the fact that some kids just aren't ready for traditional school at the same time as others.

That's because they still classify children according to age when placed in grade levels, not by developmental stages.

That is one of the major reforms that needs to happen in public education.
10:28 AM on 04/10/2012
Just learning social skills at a young age is a preschool plus. We spend trillions of dollars on wars and weaponry yet don't have money to begin our children's education on the right track. Preschool should be part of an education just as kindergarten or high school is. I would like to know if people that think its a handout to help pay for preschool also think that it's a handout to pay for their child's public school education. I'm also venturing a guess that most people commenting negatively about preschool don't have children or may not care very much about them.
11:26 AM on 04/10/2012
Our priorities have been 10 billion plus per month on the wasted wars in the middle east and what have we got to show for it?...I feel sorry for all of us, except the filthy rich that have benefited from these wars!...More and more corporations are moving to China and making them richer and smarter than us, of course!... We are letting thousands, per day, come to this country, that need to learn English, and don't believe in birth control, so where does that leave us?...More stupid and pitiful because we already had enough of those!!! What a sorry mess we're in!!!! LOL....If the filthy rich are not made to pay more taxes, because of the loopholes, what does this mean?....The millions of immigrants of many NATIONALITIES are having children now and are over-whelming the school systems, and depending on the US to provide for them too!!!!...Stupid people having stupid children and expect the teachers to teach them!!! HELP

I believe that investing in our children's development from the earliest age is the single most important contribution we can make to the health and wellbeing of our citizens, their capacity and the future prosperity of our state. Jay Weatherill, Premier of South Australia

I have a proposal, I'll trade Australia John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan for Jay Weatherill.

Actually when birth rates were higher so were morals and kids test scores we higher also.

So your partisan hack politically view is not worth a hill of beans.....

How about you stop listerning to liberal rhetoric and realize the world has more than one shallow version, it might help open your eyes to more in life?

Totally unsupported. Morals were not higher. And there is no way to compare test scores.
