"Sony, .......has been hammered by weak demand for its televisions and overtaken by more innovative gadget rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics."

In addition they've spent far too much on entertainment properties, movies, music, etc. purchased over the last several years.

Love my PS3. Videogame, Blu-ray player and a 3D blu-ray player. What's not to love? Plus Playstation network is free and we don't have to pay yearly for my son to play on line. Sony is alright by me.

It's too bad that they didn't capitalize on that because gaming wise people do prefer Xbox. Their blu-ray is top notch and their online network is not bad either.

Oddly enough I had an X-box and didn't like it so I sold it. Looked into getting one for my son now that he is old enough and it looks like they nickel and dime you to death. I think we will stick with the PS3.

Sony is overrated and overpriced. I bought a Sony TV in 1992. It up and died on me after two and a half years. The picture quality wasn't all that great either. My old RCA purchased in 1998 is still chugging along after 14 years with a picture as clear and crisp as the day I bought it.

That's funny because consumer reports will tell us the exact opposite!! I wonder if you got lucky or if they are not as right as people think.

I think your second option is the correct one.

" "There have been several reasons for our poor results," Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato said at a news briefing in Tokyo on Tuesday, noting a strong yen and poor demand."

Stunning insight - must be why he draws down the big bucks. Katosan, simply put, your firm suffers from RIMism, defined here as "atherosclerosis of the corporate arteries."

I have noticed SONY went downhill in the last several years. I have the SONY Bravia TV. While the video is excellent, the audio has lots of problems. Not just on my tv but on the whole line based on bloggers comments. A universal SONY remote also has problems. These are, as I see it, engineering problems. NO more SONY for me.

Sony is going to have a lot tougher time competing in the future. They owned the broadcast television market in the '80's & 90's when (videotape-based) Betacam/SP camera & editing systems were the industry standard.

I'm guessing the digital revolution is taking it's toll on Sony - much like it did on Kodak.

I got rid of my last piece of Sony a few years ago. I never intend to buy their cheap Walmart type junk ever again.

I know there's a lot of hate for Sony but I do love my PS3. Just got Boogie Nights on Blu-ray and watched it on my 42" screen.

Sony is no longer the great company it once was. My company used to deal with Sony on their electronics. The problems we had with their lcd flat panels was incredible, so many recalls it was a wonder they still had customers. My company does home entertainment installs, we customize all components to create home theaters. Most of my customers are well healed and pay a premium for what they get, and they get a lot. I no longer use Sony flat panels, they are unreliable and we ended up fixing most of them that failed after install. Sony used to care about their customers satisfaction, no more, that's why they're where they are.

Sony was to me what apple is today to the younger generation. Its astounding how so many things can go wrong in one decade.

...and Sony today is what Apple will be in a few years.  More and more problems right out of the box for Apple products.  Less time spent in R&D and more time in the court room...

I quit buying Sony products years ago -- when they were caught manufacturing music CDs with a rootkit that would secretly install on a PC without user/owner permission. I vote with my money as it's the strongest vote we have today in the USA. Perhaps others are doing the same.

If they lay off "around 6 percent of its global workforce -" how do they expect people to have money for electronics? So the greed is trickling down. Blame it on insane and unreasonable profit expectations. How long can you squeeze the orange and still expect to get juice?
