I thought it very striking from a distance (which this afforded for the live audience) but definitely a miss for the close up shots on television and stills. Oh well. I'm sooooo over it.

It made her look pregnant... Not that there's anything wrong with that... but it was just unflattering.
(As were the series of dresses she wore during the DNConvention, with their weird flower-things around tha necklines... really strange.)

Generally, she looks very well put-together, tho', like that hot yellow outfit she wore on Letterman (or was it Leno?)

But if I had one general piece of advice, it would be to avoid anything floral/flowery... It makes her look dowdy and as if something happened to her own clothes and she had to borrow something from someone who does not share her style sensibility.

the dress did not suit her and did not translate well from model to a real, gorgeous woman. looked like a bad knock off. i admire the bold statement and think it's great to come out bold. the overall color of their look was great although i do not like dressing a little girl of 7 in black.

I know black is used now for every occasion, but it made this sweet lovely child Sasha disappear into the background. the color of Malia's dress was beautiful.

I admire the attempt at a bold statement but it did not flatter her at all. personally I also did not like the sheath she wore at his acceptance speech. and her look the day after the election, in baseball cap, no color, to revive her. I hope she pays more attention to even the 'off' days.

it's good or bad, but true pictures are worth a thousand words. She is beautiful and exciting and I'm sure will find her style.

CLAIBORNE KICKED HIM TO THE CURB( AND TRUST ME THEY WERE NOT THE FIRST OR SECOND MAJOR GROUP TO DO SO) HIS DESIGNS DO NOT WORK ! THEY LOOK PASSABLE ON MODELS AND HORRID ON REAL WOMEN. MS OBAMA LOOKED TERRIBLE IN THAT NIGHTMARE DRESS. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FASHION AND TASTE AND STYLE ..THIS DRESS HAD ZERO TASTE AND NO ELEGANCE OR STYLE . 0 OUT OF 10 !

Does anyone remember Nancy Reagan's designer gowns? Weren't they just given to her? It was ok for her to accept them then? Could the same thing occur now? The First Lady of the United States of America should always look very well turned out.

Michelle's dress didn't work on the night. It probably only worked on the catwalks with specific lighting. Her girl's dresses were simply magic. I suspect Michelle was "ADVISED" in the way Princess Diana was when she got engaged. Anyone remember Princess Diana's dowdy engagement suit.? Or Princess Maxima of the Netherlands' dowdy engagement suit, or Princess Mette Marit of Norway's dowdy engagement suit? Michelle has worn great stuff that's not necessarily high fashion at high end prices on on all her occasions.
I am sure she will WOW us all at the inauguration. You go Michelle and trust your own taste and style, not the professional advisors.

Actually, I don't think any young/little girls should wear black, unless it's black velvet with lace or colored satin trim.... Malia's red was wonderful, but Sasha should have been in something brighter too.

(I wasn't allowed to wear black until I moved out on my own.)

:0 Sasha looked beautiful...go on with that old fogy mess.

I just LOOOOOVE Michelle.....but HATED the dress!!!! It made her look like she just got off of a flying saucer or something.

But she is bright, strong and such a wonderful example to us, so who cares anyway!

And her girls are just MEGA-ADORABLE!!!!!!!

I thought the dress looked great. Another co-worker of mine that attended the same party said her dress made her look like a black widow.

I will say that her convention speech dress was AMAZING. So was the purple number she wore when Barack accepted the nomination, and her dress on The View and the outfit on the Tonight Show were all quite lovely.

She is a very tall, statuesque, beautiful woman. She has a lovely smile, a strong sense of fashion & self, and a President - Elect that adores her.

She's also our new first lady. Get used to it!

I don't care for the dress as much as I liked most of the other dresses I've seen her in but IMHO the beauty lies with the person wearing the dress and I think Michelle Obama is stunningly gorgeous regardless of what she is or isn't wearing.

Imagine this: A First Lady who doesn't feel the pressure to be the embodiment of a reincarnated Jackie O. With absolutely no, nada, zip disrespect for the beautifully coutured Mrs. Kennedy-Onassis, all first ladies after have fallen into line with their little suits, their discreet jewelry and for the most part simple subdued tastes. All fine. But I like it that Michelle has some personality. I think as she morphs into her new role as First Lady, she'll find her pace and continue to wow us.

I don't keep up on all of this stuff, but has Michelle single-handedly brought back the dress this year...or was that happening anyway?

The dress is hideous and she doesn't have the body for it. She looked great at the convention. Hip is not good for her.

I loved Mrs. Obama (Michelle's) dress. She looked great. I want one just like it and hope I can wear it as well as she. What matters most is that her husband, "The President", liked it. Leave Mrs. Obama alone. They looked great.

What really matters is for Mrs. Obama representing all of us as our First Lady, she is not anymore ONLY a wife and a mother. I want my First Lady to be classy and elegant , she does not need to immitate anybody, she could do wonders creating her own style but she needs to be carefull to mantein what is expected from somebody in her position.

I love that dress!!! I think it is totally hot!!!

I think Michelle just wanted to break out and have some fun, her attire reflected her inner workings.

It's clearly what she needed to wear, regardless of what anyone else thought.

Well,
I think the dress was okay. It looked good on her. It was kind simple, but the colors gave it a wild look. I liked it better than the one Michelle wore the night Mr. Obama gave his acceptance speech at the DNC. I think someone has gotten their hands on Michelle's fashion choices and I hope that real soon they take their hands off. Michelle had a power fashion image before Mr. Obama was the presumptive nominee and then it all went out of the window and she took on this soccer mom look. I love the way she looked when she spoke at the DNC. I hope that this is the Michelle we will see most of the time. But then I saw a picture of her this morning with a pony tail, ugly jacket, and base ball cap! Geez, I hope we don't see that Michelle any more!

I loved the dress, I thought it was a great departure from the usual First lady frock.
02:29 PM on 11/08/2008
Departing from the usual First Lady "look" is OK as far as class and elegance is mantained. This black and red dress did not work.
